Oh Praise Be The Weiner, at least until he has disgraced himself beyond levels of acceptability. Lies and false accusations of criminality are acceptable to a point, but eventually, even a Democrat reaches a point too far. Now that the hounds of reality and truth have treed the dark haired spokesman for Progressivism and all things Socialist, within the tree of accountability, there is but one option open.
Weiner now must fall upon the blunted sword of mental illness; in a move meant to gather a sympathetic army of witless Progressive Socialists around him, he now feigns a disease that no one has heard of, but one that guarantees him time and an excuse for his degenerate behavior. He is no longer considered a wretched pervert: he is now a victim of a terrible disease that made him helpless to resist the horrible symptoms of the disease.
It would be considered inhumane to unseat a congressman who is in therapy to recover from an addiction. We Americans are always willing to offer help to those seeking to help themselves. The more skeptical among us will view his sudden realization of an affliction of mental illness as a shrewd political maneuver, but we realists are considered cynics and therefore unworthy to pass judgement on such delicate matters.
Now Weiner is poised between the sheets of semi-respectability and he waits; for in this game, timing is critical. If he can present himself in tights and cape and Weiner in hand at a critical moment, the world or at least the Democrat Party may forgive those minor indiscretions of the past and welcome a deciding vote with open arms. With his party behind him once more, he only has those evil and cynical Republicans to contend with and they can be so partisan.

Greg, pundits and politicians are two different animals. Yes, neither side has a monopoly on despicable behavior. However, the Democrat Party now owns the Weiner; they have not only defended his actions and accusations, but they have allowed him to carry on with his fantasy and smear all of them with his perversions. We conservatives are vulnerable because we expect our opposition to be honest, logical, and upright like we are. They’re not. It’s our Achilles Heel. As John Galt explained in Atlas Shrugged the left is “using our virtue against us”. The left understands this, but the right still hasn’t figured out the nature of evil that we are up against.

Should we hold our elected officials to a higher standard? Absolutely!
They are given a great responsibility and the advantages and benefits that accompany that responsibility. When they fall short morally, ethically, or legally they should receive full exposure to the law rather than preferential treatment. There would be fewer problems and more faith in our government if serious infractions like Rangel and Waters were dealt with as criminal cases rather than pathetic imitations of the trials that us lesser people would face.

Interesting post. Not to go off topic (I believe this is related) but I wanted to let you know I’ve kept my eye on Herman Cain, per your recommendation, and I’m afraid to say I’m very disappointed. What’s your take on his Obama “was raised in Kenya” gaff? I see two possible explanations: 1) He’s trying to appeal to the anti-Muslim/Obama conspiracy theory fringe, who don’t have a clear cut candidate with Trump gone (further evidence of this are his puzzling comments regarding a “creeping” attempt to institute Sharia law in the US); 2) he’s ill-informed enough to not know that the President of the US wasn’t raised in Kenya, the person whose job he covets. Neither explanation is very appealing. The first shows a cynical lack of scruples in his politics (not unlike Trump’s), while the second is, from a practical standpoint, alarming in his lack of knowledge of his potential foe in the general election. It’s a shame he couldn’t have fulfilled the wishes of some for a fiscally conservative, business-minded candidate in the mold of Jack Kemp. That ship apparently sailed from the Republican party some time ago.

Tom, I don’t understand the gaff. Cain seems to be strongly opposed to being called an African-American and perhaps there are many more reasons than we can perceive at this time. This use of hyphens is resented by some Americans; especially, if most of your antecedents were here for the Civil War, you have at least a couple hundred relatives walking the earth. Of course, if you multiply that times the amount of Americans that qualify for that distinction, it becomes obvious that there weren’t that many people in North America and that the only other option is that we are all distant cousins. A fact that I find really amusing.
A lack of scruples can hardly be determined on a single gaff. In that case poor Biden might be facing criminal charges. Cain’s lack of scruples would have also become apparent with the airing of dirty laundry by this time; however, the race is only beginning.
Actually from you Tom, I expect a greater objectivity. It is possible that Cain has never really studied the life of Obama and suffers from a deficit in this regard. It was an unfortunate remark; in the interim, I will assume it was just an unfortunate remark and refrain from basing a political theory on a few words.
True enough a politician should be able to think on his feet and be intimately familiar with the history of his opponents and their personal history.
A sad mistake, but not a game decider by any means. If there is a Republican Administration in 2013, Cain will surely be a valuable component if he is not at the helm.
Governor Perry will be a formidable opponent and there are still many battles to be fought and analyzed.
Republicans are now fielding a stronger group than was visualized a few months ago and I am sure the winner of this primary will be formidable.

Yes, there is plenty of guilt to go around in our political houses and I will not spare my keyboard when Republicans cross the line in the future, but now the harsh light of reality is on Anthony Weiner and his seemingly cowardly behavior at avoiding the penalties of malfeasance.

The Gaff in context, Cain seems to be testy over the label African American, perhaps he lost his focus:

I don’t like people trying to label me. African- American is socially acceptable for some people, but I am not some people.”
What is it about the word “African” that the candidate doesn’t particularly appreciate?

And I’m sure my ancestors go all the way back to Africa, but I feel more of an affinity for America than I do for Africa. I’m a black man in America.”
This statement came shortly before our discussion turned to another politician generally understood to be an African- American.
“Barack Obama is more of an international,” Cain said. “I think he’s out of the mainstream and always has been. Look, he was raised in Kenya, his mother was white from Kansas and her family had an influence on him, it’s true, but his dad was Kenyan, and when he was going to school he got a lot of fellowships, scholarships, he stayed in the academic environment for a long time. He spent most of his career as an intellectual.”

Rich, I have known several bookmakers on both sides of the Atlantic and you may have missed your calling. It’s legal in Ireland, but they keep all the figures in their head including bets and odds on a dozen horses in eight or nine races. You must watch them to believe it. It’s much easier here in the US, but occasionally you must do time in prison. I spent a good portion of my life around gambling at the race tracks and it doesn’t hold my attention. I am anxious to watch the primary develop. It matters little who think will win, I have my favorites, but those opinions may change and if they didn’t, we might as well vote right now. No there will be a great wrestling match of the minds and a formidable opponent that can withstand the fierceness of battle and the intellectual challenges will emerge. That is exciting for me.
I don’t know why people assume Obama was raised in Kenya, I have not seen the evidence, but then again, we have missed a lot of facts concerning our president. The lack of verification is the impetus for speculation and Obama is partially responsible for that, by remaining an enigma. Not all inquiries are accusatory in nature, it is natural for people and children to want to know the personal history of our presidents, for goodness sakes, they spend hours studying the lives of musicians and atheletes. That is a natural curiosity; when curiosity is denied, conspiracy theories are born, on both sides of the aisle.

Tom, I think this use of code words is more an exercise among listeners than speakers. If there is a secret set of code words, no one has sent me the sheet with the code words and their meanings. LOL Sometimes, speakers will reach for a word and they will use one that is inappropriate. Chris Matthews might say that is a code word for racism; oh my, that may be the farthest thing from the original intention, but the word and its code designation will be seared into the memory of some people.
If someone held a gun to my head and said give me a code word, I would need to make something up very quickly and I am a fairly active writer in touch with a wide variety of Conservatives.
Politics is a dirty game at best, McCain illustrated the results of trying to run a clean campaign. There are cheap shots that can be thrown without lies, they involve the power of persuasion and sentence formation. Either a candidate has a quick wit or good speech writers, but either way the game will be heating up in the near future.
Skookum, eloquently stated (as always) and you make an excellent point regarding the genesis of conspiracy theories. There is an alternate, or perhaps complimentary, view that certain individuals are predisposed to conspiracy theories, and that these theories tend to arise out of necessity to fill the vacuum created as previous conspiracy theories are debunked or fall out of favor. So whereas certain theories, such as those surrounding “The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion” or “The Appolo Moon Landing” age poorly and slip into oblivion, up springs “9/11 was an inside job” and “Obama Birtherism” to take their places.

Fair enough. Am I, as a listener, reading into Cain’s quotes what I want to hear? I will be the first person to admit that we all approach everything in life with predispositions and biases and we should be vigilant to guard against letting them rule reason. On the Cain question, I don’t think I would have read the gaff as something beyond an innocent and insignificant slip if it had not been for the comments he made regarding Muslims. It all seemed to dovetail too conveniently, as if there was a strategy behind it. I will keep an open mind however, based upon your high opinion of Cain.
Tom, I have a friend who is a horseshoer and he is obsessed with conspiracies. He will tell you about little black boxes that allow cars to get over a hundred miles a gallon and boxes that can power the whole country, but some mysterious entity is always depriving the country of the technology. He is one of the legions lost to the myths of delusions. I have no idea as to his political persuasions and I don’t want to know. I’ve often wondered if these guys have their own underground magazines that feed them this information or if they just communicate with each other. He is beyond hope or help, I am sure he is not alone.

What did Obama’s parent’s do for a living? His father was not much more than a common laborer and his mother a teacher. Sounds real romantic that this would be his roots, but lets continue. We are talking about 1960 in Kenya which means the best salary of combined incomes would have been around $2,500 a year.
Barry had both brothers and sisters born to his family less than three years before and after his birth! How much was the average cost of living in Kenya during this time to support a family of the size of the Obama family. It would have taken approximately $1, 200 to $1,500 live a minimal life in Kenya per year.
Now a airline ticket to Hawaii from Kenya would have cost about $1, 200 to $1, 400 each person to arrive to this state from Kenya. This would mean that on the salary as stated above they would have to have at least $3,600 for the passage they would have had to make for Obama to be born in the State of Hawaii. Does this make sense? No certainly not even to a fourth grader in elementary school!
Now getting to Hawaii is one thing what are they going to do for a living? Where did they work? Who were they associated with? Who knew them? Absolutely nobody!
Logically If I had to defend my identification of birth I could place hundreds of people who knew my parents and knew of my birth! How about you? How about anybody? Logically any of us could produce this evidence even above a birth certificate.
Another question comes to mind! Where did they work in Hawaii? There were no tax return to be filed then? His father and mother were invisible employees? How did they make enough money to return in time to have his little sibling so promptly in Kenya?
Why is this a question? Well Hawaii has always been more expensive than the states, and in 1961 it would have cost about $6,000 per year to maintain a family in Hawaii at a minimal range of living.
Now we come to a critical question. From where did Barry’s parents have money to do all of this? from the salary of a common laborer and a kindergarten teacher to have these kind of funds?
How did Barry’s parents have the means to travel like a modern ” Jet setters” to travel the globe at their desire?
One little note many would not like is who in the world in 1961 would have on their birth certificate have the classification of “African” the Black Panthers didn’t exist then! why? It defies all logic!
How did they return to Kenyan to have Barry’s siblings?
How come nobody has stepped forward? This is not important enough?

Barack jr was the ONLY child of his mom Anne Durham a student at U. of Hawaii and fellow student Barack Obama from Kenya,As mentioned Barack jr born in Hawaii Aug 4 1961. Father left to attend graduate school at Harvard in 1963,did not return and they were divorced.Sr returned from Harvard to Kenya and visited his ex and son only once in Hawaii when JR. was 10.
