Romney/Obama Debate Open Thread

Loading

The third and final debate is tonight at 9pm EST. A few topics to consider in this open thread is what is missing from tonight's topics:

So two-thirds of the debate will be about the Greater Middle East. Two-thirds. Schieffer has generously allowed that China and Tomorrowland the entire Pacific Rim should get fifteen minutes. Here are the following areas and topics that apparently won't be discussed:

1) The eurozone crisis
2) Latin America
3) Russia
4) Africa
5) Foreign economic policy
6) India
7) North Korea

Now I get that some of these topics won't come up in a foreign policy debate that lasts only 90 minutes. But I'm also thinking that maybe, just maybe, it would be a better foreign policy debate if they actually talked about, you know, SOMETHING OTHER THAN THE MIDDLE EAST!!!!!!

I'm not saying the Middle East isn't important — we have lost blood and treasure there, some of it very recently. But I simply do not believe that the region is so important that it should occupy 66.7% of a foreign policy debate.

And you gotta love Reason's drinking game for tonight:

Start with a robust pregame chug for all the foreign policy issues that won’t be discussed: Democracy and development in Africa, the future of Russia, the Eurozone crisis, Greece and austerity budgets, debt and monetary policy in Japan.

And then t

ake a drink if:

Obama claims he ended the war in Iraq.
Romney fails to note that he didn’t.
Obama mumbles something vaguely incoherent about Afghanistan.
Romney mumbles something vaguely incoherent about Afghanistan.
Obama talks up sanctions on Iran.
Romney says those sanctions are not strong enough, but won’t say what action(s) would be.
Either candidate attempts to provide a detailed assessment of Iran’s nuclear program.
Romney once again botches his criticism of the Obama administration’s Benghazi blunders.
Obama defends his administration’s days-long insistence that the attacks were provoked by a YouTube video critical of Islam.
Romney promises to brand China a currency manipulator.
Obama declares that America must outcompete the rest of the world.
Romney, like just about every presidential candidate for the last few decades, pledges to achieve North American energy independence by 2020, but does not promise to discover unicorns, which is equally likely.
Obama says he wants to end subsidies to big oil without mentioning that he wants to plow those subsidies right back into dubious green energy projects.
Romney accuses Obama of having gone on an apology tour.
Anyone uses the words “mission accomplished.”
Anyone uses the words “brought to justice.”
Anyone mispronounces the name of a foreign country or city. Double shot if they pause to slowly correct themselves.
Anyone, including the moderator, gets mixed up about which war he’s talking about.

Special rules:

Take one drink the first time President Obama mentions Osama bin Laden. Take two drinks the second time. And three drinks the third. Keep increasing the number of drinks accordingly each time he mentions him. And so on and so forth, so on the sixth time President Obama mentions bin Laden, you should take six drinks.

Buy a truck full of tequila, drive straight to Mexico, and open a bar under an assumed name if Romney responds to any of Obama’s bin Laden mentions by saying “you didn’t build that.”

Anyone got another one to add to this list?

@Doc Holliday: Oh come on Larry! Obama came across as small and petty and Romney came across as a statesman who wouldn’t take Obie’s bait.

@Dc: I don’t think we were watching the same debate. Romney studiously avoided rising to Obie’s bait and re-hashing the second debate.

@Doc Holliday: Doc, Romney’s job in this debate was to woo the indies and swing voters. The Conservative base already is voting for him, and sure it would have been an effin’ awesome debate to see Romney cream Obie. But that would net Mitt nothing and give the election to Obama.

I can hold off a little vicarious debate “blood” for the rush on election night when NBC and MSLSD are forced to call the election for Romney.

Anticsrocks Where ya bin? Back for the close?
Remember who told you Romney would be there at the end? He’s doing whatever it takes to get the W
He bears NO resemblance to the guy who won in FLA. and that’s exactly as he planned it.
Two weeks out and it’s dead even. Stick around and welcome back.

@anticsrocks:

I did not realize that “not taking the bait” was the goal of debating destructive socialists. I thought Romney had many chances to take on the radical left, and he did not. Maybe his job was to stay above the fray and not engage in a battle of ideas. IMHO, if that is the case, we have already lost, we are not fighting on our battlefield, but on the others.

@Doc Holliday:

so veterans should build roads?

Right or wrong, our military has participated in “nation-building” projects since at least the aftermath of the Spanish-American War.

President Obama June 22, 2011 in Afghanistan: “America, it is time to focus on nation-building here at home.”

Americans on both sides of the political aisle, it seems, are feeling this.

According to ”debate Obama,” Obama has finally bought into the concept of American exceptionalism.
Too bad we also have the record of “president Obama” who never showed us such a thing.

Obama called his inaction toward Syria ”leadership.”
(Like a community organizer, I guess.)
Obama has only ”led from behind,” on Syria…..a lot like he did in Libya (and we see how that turned out.)
Syria has only gotten worse and worse.
Al Qaeda is on the rise in Syria.
Iran is blatantly supplying Syria’s Assad with weapons and support so he can continue to kill his own people.

But I was amazed by how often both candidates agreed.

Then I was surprised by Obama’s comment about sequestration.
Sequestration will only kick in IF there is no budget AGAIN this year.
Obama had just said, this week, that he positively would not sign a budget that didn’t raise taxes on the rich (beyond what the sun setting of the Bush tax cuts and ObamaCare already raise them!)
Tonight Obama said sequestration will not happen!
Why not?
He had no answer.

And there was much about women in the Islamic world.
Obama set up an ‘Atrocities Prevention Board’ last year.
(Not part of the debate.)
Egypt has ”morality police,” from the Muslim Brotherhood going into little villages and towns, rural areas, too, checking all females for FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION.
If, by some chance, the female had not been mutilated, she was mutilated on the spot.
The aim is 100% compliance with this atrocity.
Obama does nothing for women, other than talk about those two convenient props, Malia and Sasha.
Women here suffer more under his Administration than before.
Women in the Muslim world are being lined up for torture under his watch as well.
Romney was at least aware of the maltreatment of females in the Muslim world.
Obviously, since Muslims in small towns and villages and rural areas do NOT mutilate their females, it is a problem of the Islamists rather than of Islam.
Romney spoke of finding moderate voices in the Islamic world and aiding those groups.
Obama, he’s fine with going over Congress’ head to give cash to Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood.

I also found Obama peevish.
Obama still interrupts.
Obama still makes appeals to the moderator to save him.
Obama still begs, ”get the transcript.”
Romney countered all of that with, ”attacking me is not an agenda.”

@anticsrocks:

Certainly a matter of opinion. No worries. But, I felt in the first part…Obama’s main goal was to keep attacking what Romney said..and not talk about what he’s done or did do. And Romney didn’t respond well to that. He could have easily slapped down the whole Bayonet/Horse thing by suggesting Maybe the president should spend less time looking through the drone camera on his laptop and watching what goes on the ground. Because marines still trains with both bayonets and mules/donkeys in Afghanistan becuase that’s the kind of terrain it is.

That’s not to mention that calvary and bayonet charges (the president mentioned) are not the province of the Navy. 3rd…when the President then turned around on China to suggest that we need a presence in the Pacific (ships) and that we would work with partners to ensure shipping lanes stay open (ships)..he was talking about Naval power….as compared to China. Romney whiffed that 3x over.

But, none-the-less…I think despite Romney sounding tired..over rehearsed and that he didn’t directly respond to Obama’s best attacks/points….I don’t think this debate is going to change anybodies mind.

Funny…out of 3 debates…didn’t spend much time talking about Obama’s suckass record. I guess cause that’s all somebody else’s fault.

@Wordsmith:

well I don’t agree. If a combat veteran wants to build roads he can make that decision for himself. Obama has no right to tell our vets what to do with their lives. See the Constitution.

@Doc Holliday:

It is not the Western Way to think a war can go on forever.

Dar al-Islam vs Dar al-harb. The world is divided into the House of Islam and the House of War.

This right to wage war is the only principle of international law which is taught by Mohammedan jurists; … with the Arabs the term harby [harbi] (warrior) expresses not only an unbeliever but also an enemy; and jehady [jihadi] (striver, warrior) means the believer-militant. From the Moslem point of view, the whole world is divided into two parts — “the House of Islam,” and “the House of War.”

The Dar al-Islam is all those lands in which a Muslim government rules [or has ruled – such as Spain] and the Holy Law of Islam prevails. Non-Muslims may live there on Muslim sufferance. The outside world, which has not yet been subjugated, is called the “House of War,” and strictly speaking a perpetual state of jihad, of holy war, is imposed by the law. The law also provided that the jihad might be interrupted by truces when appropriate.

@EBL:

Just a point, they still issue bayonets in the Marine Corps. Granted most Marines are such good shots that they don’t need to use them that often, but they still have them.

Here’s why: valor.

British bayonet charge in BASRA. Part of channel(s): Iraq (current event), Afghanistan (current event) – 2004 – Prepared by the U.S. Urban Warfare Analysis Center:

Executive Summary:

In May 2004, approximately 20 British troops in Basra were ambushed and forced out of their vehicles by about 100 Shiite militia fighters. When ammunition ran low, the British troops fixed bayonets and charged the enemy. About 20 militiamen were killed in the assault without any British deaths.

That is what has many of us concerned about Romney and his establishment Republican “moderates”

He had no answer.

Team Obama (probably via Valerie Jarret,) has issued a correction indicating the President misspoke and that he will still veto an agreement that does not raise taxes on the wealthy. Of course most of the audience who watched the debate will never hear that.

@Richard Wheeler: On hiatus, Rich.

And I believe you were preaching Romney/Rubio, but I’ll give you half credit, my friend. I’m going to go on record as saying that Romney will win by 6 points.

@Doc Holliday: Well Doc I would think the goal would be to win the election. Who gives a rat’s petootie if you win a debate?

Put yourself in Romney’s shoes. He had to shore up the indie voters and the swing voters. They sit in the middle because they are not the die-hard believers in Conservatism that we are. He had to play to them if he wants to be POTUS.

@Dc: I see your point, but I believe Romney was trying to be more statesman like to woo the undecideds.

@Doc Holliday: @anticsrocks:

he was scared to tell Obama off. Obama has tried to destroy what our Founders built. But Republicans listen to K Street advisers, and they say don’t you dare attack this man.

We conservatives are attuned to that argument. Independents and remorseful former Obama voters not so much. Press that argument and you risk appearing as a shrill extremist to independents. Press that argument and former Obama voters become defensive. Romney, an effective communicator, identified his target audience and spoke persuasively to them. Foolish former Obama voters want to know it is OK to feel good about voting for Obama in 2008 but that it is OK to be disappointed with Obama now. They do not want to assay the gravity of their error in 2008.

“America, it is time to focus on nation-building here at home.” And what on earth does that mean? Is it hollow tautology? Is it the vacuous rhetoric of defeatism? Or the promise of a new soviet man?

Yes America may now earn to retreat. Far-away-istan has other ideas.

Robert Alt took a class from Obama at law school.
He says Obama should know better than what he argued about bankruptcy at the debate….

His claims are the height of audacity in an attempt to defend a failed policy that gave staggering handouts to major political contributors.

Chapter 11 bankruptcy is not the end of companies; it is an opportunity for a fresh start. Just ask Macy’s, 7-Eleven, and just about every major American airline in the country, all of which have gone through bankruptcy not to close their doors, but to come out more competitive.

As Andrew Grossman argues, what the Obama administration engaged in was failed economics — redistributing over $25 billion in assets to the UAW, while avoiding the kind of reforms that will make the automakers viable in the long term.
The administration’s plan locked in unviable and uncompetitive wage and pension structures and the continuation of status quo mismanagement, all but guaranteeing that the companies will be facing similar economic dilemmas in the future, as their balance sheets demand reckoning yet again. …..

So, why would Obama knowingly lie about bankruptcy?
He was trying to pull Romney into the tall grass.
No one wants to hear the minutia of all this old news.
Obama baited.
Romney was too smart to bite.

Last month the US Treasury Dept said:

Of the $79.69 billion directly paid out by the federal government, $35.18 billion has been recouped, $37.14 is still outstanding (and unlikely to be recovered), and $7.37 billion was written off as a loss. General Motors received an additional $45 billion special tax subsidy after filing for bankruptcy.

Adding up all the negatives and subtracting them from the positives, taxpayers are out more than $82 billion. Meanwhile, Ford Motors Co., which the Obama administration didn’t bail out, posted profits of $8.8 billion in 2011.

And Obama should have watched out.
Had Romney bit he might have mentioned Obama’s quote:

“Now I want to do the same thing with manufacturing jobs, not just in the auto industry, but in every industry.”

CURT
I think we made it to the shore, this time, it became very clear to THE PEOPLE,
THIS POST IS SO INTERESTING TO READ
I love my flopping aces blog

Anticsrocks “Romney by 6%” There you go listening to Rove who had Repubs. 58-52 in the Senate. Neither will happen. Moderate Mitt or Boisterous Barack will win wiith LESS than 51% of popular vote and narrow E.C. win. Dems hold Senate.
Meek Mitt won last night’s debate–barely. As you suggest, he’s playing for the middle, acting calm and Presidential.He is focused on winning and believes he’s ahead. “Prevent defense” in effect.
The Romney we saw last night bears little resemblance to the “killer” we saw in Fla. The real Romney? Who the hell knows?
If Obama loses, pundits will point to his disasterous performance in the first debate as the turning point in the election.
Semper Fi Marines will ALWAYS be issued bayonets.

Romney won the presidential debate by looking presidential. Obama had a painful case of Biden’s smile

Indeed

Romney won the third presidential debate – and how he did it was encapsulated in a single exchange. The candidates were discussing military spending and Romney had just accused Obama of making harmful cutbacks. The President wheeled out what must have seemed like a great, pre-planned zinger: “I think Governor Romney maybe hasn’t spent enough time looking at how our military works. You mentioned the navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets because the nature of our military’s changed.” The audience laughed, Obama laughed, I laughed. It was funny.

But here’s why it was also a vote loser. For a start, Twitter immediately lit up with examples of how the US Army does still use horses and bayonets (horses were used during the invasion of Afghanistan). More importantly, this was one example of many in which the President insulted, patronised and mocked his opponent rather than put across a constructive argument. His performance was rude and unpresidential. Obama seemed to have a touch of the Bidens, wriggling about in his chair, waving his hands dismissively and always – always – smirking in Romney’s direction. By contrast, Romney sucked up the abuse and retained a rigid poker face all night. He looked like a Commander in Chief; Obama looked like a lawyer. Who would you rather vote for?

Obama looked like an ill-tempered community activist.

In 1916, Britain was the world’s predominant naval power. The USA was but an upstart power on the world scene together with Argentina.

At 0700 today, the Joint Chiefs issued the following order:
“Effective at 0800 Monday, submarines shall no longer be defined as ‘boats’ but as ‘ships’. This order is being made retroactive to the morning before the debate in order to prevent the Commander in Chief from looking like an ignorant fool. Any military member who, or who did refer to a submarine as anything other than a ‘ship’ after 0800 Monday shall be guilty of treason against the President of the United Secure States of America (USSA).” sarc/off

we must not forget that MITT ROMNEY had a talk with the FAMILY OF CHRIS STEVENS,
they ask not to bring their son in a politic exchange,
and that is exactly why MITT ROMNEY DID PASS THE STORY, HE REDUCE HIS ANSWER ON LIBYA,
otherwise he would have neutered OBAMA,
MITT DID NOT WANT TO GO THAT ROUTE,
IT TELL US THAT MITT ROMNEY RESPECT THE WISH OF THE PEOPLE, HE SHOWED HE IS FOR THE PEOPLE,
MITT ROMNEY IS THE WINNER,
HAVE YOU EVER WATCH A GAME OF ANYTHING IN LAS VEGAS,
AND TRY TO FIND THE WINNER?

@openid.aol.com/runnswim:

So, does anyone want to speculate on what Donald Trump’s “very, very big news” is going to be about?

I hope The Donald and Gloria Alred hold a joint press conference and announce they are having a love child. And they will name this child Barack Romney Alred Trump.

@ilovebeeswarzone:

Thanks for the reminder, Bees. You are exactly right. Mitt Romney has class, and cares about people as individuals. It will be nice to see that in the Oval Office again.
It is amazing how, lately, the Office of the President has about as much class as a pawn shop whenever it is held by Liberals.

Aqua
hi,
could it be the unequivical proof of his false birth certificate?

Aqua
or the proof that COMPANIES will come back as soon as MITT ROMNEY IS ELECTED,
NOT BEFORE

@Richard Wheeler: And don’t forget to take a corpsman!!

Something to think about, Mitt wins Fla. Va. N.C, Ia. Co. and Nv. BHO wins Oh.Wi. and N.H. All others go to current leader 269-269 Tie Constitution calls for House to decide Prez.-Romney, Senate decides Veep.–Biden. Romney/Biden

CommonSense Never forget the Corpsman

Bees Maybe The Donald will finally explain the intricacies of his combover.

Petercat
hi,
you add up the missing word that is INDIVIDUAL,
RIGHT ON
OBAMA HAS TREATED PEOPLE as groups, the rich, the welfare, the students, the catholic, the woman, the extremist, the blacks, the whites, ecetera, ecetera
never individuals person,
separated them in groups each with a label
YES

@Richard Wheeler:
Bush/Cheney in 2001 was a great team but Bush/Lieberman would have worked well too.

But Biden?

@ilovebeeswarzone:
I can’t remember where it was, but close associates of Obama have said that he really doesn’t like people. I guess it’s hard to feel superior to someone when you’re face-to-face with them. Easier with groups.
Have you noticed that Obama seems to treat all of those groups that you named with disdain?
Putting on a ghetto accent when speaking to blacks?
Telling women to vote “as if your lady parts depend on it”.
Forcing the Church to act against it’s beliefs?
And on and on it goes. Where it stops, nobody knows.
Nov 6, we hope… but we won’t know until then.

Boats are smaller craft, often used to get from land to ships.

@Skookum:
Or submarines, which are not ships.

@Doc Holliday:

well I don’t agree. If a combat veteran wants to build roads he can make that decision for himself. Obama has no right to tell our vets what to do with their lives. See the Constitution.

???

What part of the Constitution, specifically? Obama (or any president) has “no right to tell our vets what to do with their lives”? What specifically is he telling them to do that you don’t like? (Sorry if it’s stated earlier in the thread; I’ve not read from the beginning). “Build roads”?

Article 2, Section 2:

The President shall be Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States;

My point is that regardless of what you may think of Obama telling our military to “build roads”, our military has participated in “nation-building” operations stretching back over a 100 yrs. If you have a problem with it, your critique should broaden out to encompass the same act from many presidents. Not just the current PotUS, who made a statement you apparently find agreement with but won’t admit: “… it is time to focus on nation-building here at home.”

Oh, lookie, lookie, Lib1 found a far left website, funded by George Soros, that says “Romney lies”.

Whoda thunk it?

he is telling them to train the AFGHANS MILITARY, WHO SHOOT THEM IN THE BACK IN RETURN.

@Aqua:

I was hoping for a Celebrity Death Match, myself. Two enter the ring, one leaves alive.

Obama’s talking points for why he should get another term are laughable if not pitiful. I killed Osama and I ended the war in Iraq are not a plan for a next term. They are a list of “accomplishments” trying to shore up what is otherwise a very pitiful first term.

The “War” in Iraq…was fought in phases and was all over except for the signing of status of forces agreement. And Obama’s contribution to that was “zero”. He did nothing but oppose everything that brought about the conditions on the ground such that our troops “could” be withdrawn. Obama’s part in ending the war in Iraq was to sign the paper at the WH.

Secondly…I’m really getting tired of this “…going after the people who actually did attack us on 9/11”. The Afghan’s did not attack us on 9/11…nor did Taliban gov. Osama bin ladens group who had safe haven in Afghanistan did. It was GW Bush who “went after them” and they mostly fled Afghanistan (those who were not killed out right). After that..it became a stabilizing and rebuilding operation to continue to deny AlQueda a place to return to. The people he’s fighting now…are the people who have an interest in destabilizing Afghanistan gov (Taliban and Pakistan). And the heroin traders. None of whom attacked us on 9/11 by his definition and meaning of it.

It just all seems/reads like some grade school most popular contest to me. And it’s largely insulting.

Here’s my agenda for my 2nd term:

I killed Osama Bin Laden

I ended the war in Iraq.

Romney is G. Bush and a liar.

Did I mention that I killed Osama?
etc.

It all has the word “FORWARD” over it. That’s no plan. And anybody who thinks that it is…is well…I dunno what to say. Purposefully ignorant?

@Hard Right:

I was hoping for a Celebrity Death Match, myself. Two enter the ring, one leaves alive.

I like it, but I would fear for The Donald’s safety.

OBAMA did not won the debate, far from it,
HE KEPT WASTING TIME WHICH IS ONLY 2 MINUTES EACH BY ATTACKING MITT ROMNEY
ON FAR LONG GONE WORDS FROM THE PAST 10 YEARS, UNIMPORTANT FOR THE TOPIC,
NO FOR SURE,
IT’S MITT ROMNEY WHO WIN,
AMERICANS ARE NOT LOOKING FOR AN ACTOR, OR FOR A VERBAL IMPECCABLE TONGUE,
OR A PERFECT FACE,
THEY are looking for a brainy president to serve and protect the CONSTITUTION FOR THE PEOPLE,which are nothing without it, and not worthy to be called AMERICANS,
THEREFOR IT IS MOST IMPERATIVE TO CHOOSE THE ONE WHO IS TRUE TO HIS OATH ,
AND TRUE TO AMERICANS FIRST AND BEFORE ANY FOREIGN COUNTRIES,
THE ONE WHO TAKE AMERICA FOR WHAT SHE HAS INSPIRED FROM THE FRAMERS IN CENTURIES PAST, NOT TRYED TO CHANGE IT AND PREVENT THE PEOPLE TO CREATE AND BE WHO THEY ARE
IN THEIR SOUL, AND BECOME WEALTHY AND CAPITALIST NOT COMMUNIST DESTRUCTIVES AGENDA,
GOD PROTECT AMERICA AND BLESS THEM WITH A NEW PRESIDENT MITT ROMNEY READY TO GIVE HIS ALL FOR THE PEOPLE,
IF YOU DENY THIS TO HAPPEN YOU WILL CARRIED THE CONSEQUENCES AND MISS AN OPORTUNITY TO STOP THE DOWNFALL OF THIS GREAT AMERICA.

Dc As I’ve said before,if Romney can position himself as a moderate and not beholden to the Far Right or the Tea Party he will win.He is currently trying very hard to do this. Clearly evidenced in last night’s debate.
It’s absolutely true BHO doesn’t have much to run on.He’s trying to project Romney as an uncaring Conservative. Mitt is trying NOW to project as a true RINO who’ll work with the Dems.
It’s his version of BHO’S “There are no blue states,no red states only the United States” It worked for BHO in 2008, why not Mitt in 2012.

@retire05: Oh, lookie, lookie, Lib1 found a far left website, funded by George Soros, that says “Romney lies”.

Whoda thunk it?

More to the point, Liberal 1 0 linked rather than pick one or two so-called ”myths,” and made their case here himself.
I guess he knew he couldn’t.

Drudge had a link to a nasty old rumor that Obama sold cocaine (as opposed to using it whenever he could afford it) when he was in college in NY.
Apparently Romney was given this but passed on it.

Romney says no to Obama cocaine hit…

Unlike those opponents when Bush ran for president…..twice.

OBAMA SOLD COCAINE IS THAT A SURPRISE?
I don’t think so, According to one blogger the drug is circulating all over the WHITE HOUSE,
IT WAS SAID MANY TIMES AROUND THE BLOGOSPHERE.

In assessing character, is there a better line from this debate than this over-the-top self-serving statement? . . .

“One thing I think Americans should be proud of: when Tunisians began to protest, this nation, me, my administration, stood with them . . . “

How can anyone possibly want to see 4 more years from this mind?

@Aqua:

I suspect Donald’s hair would be his secret weapon in the clinch. It would come to life and strangle her.

@Richard Wheeler: I made it through your first sentence and was quickly reminded that you operate under the false assumption that I get all my news from Fox News.

I made my prediction based upon what I see, and have seen in the polls for the last two months. First of all, there is a trend that is steadily going towards Romney and away from Obama. This trend intensified right after the first debate where Romney slaughtered Obama, and it is continuing still.

Please Rich, stop assuming things about me, it only makes you look foolish.

@Liberal1 (Objectivity): Think Progress is your source?

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

Yep, they’re not biased…
