Get off Tebow’s back. Especially you, Maher [Reader Post]

Loading

Tim Tebow’s devotion to his religious beliefs is nothing new, but you’d never know it based on what the media is doing to him.

At HuffPo:

Brady Slays Tebow

Drudge:

GOD LOVES TOM, TOO…

SI:

Love him. Doubt him. Praise him. Ridicule him. Gape in awe. As the last two months have shown, there are 300 million opinions of the Broncos’ quarterback, and every one of them is right

SNL mocks him for his religious devotion.

And of course there is the incomparably disgusting and idiotic Bill Maher:

A “Tebowing.com” site has been created. The cynic in me has doubts about its intentions, especially based on Jared Kleinstein’s own words:

After the dramatic win, Denver native Jared Kleinstein and several friends snapped a picture of themselves in the same pose that Tebow took after the game. They dubbed the action “Tebowing” and posted their picture on Facebook. After the pic generated an unexpected number of likes and comments, the 24-year-old Kleinstein launching a website dedicated to Tebowing.

The site sells Tebow gear which allegedly supports local charities. I have an email to the site asking exactly how much of their sales actually goes to charity.

One might to be tempted to think Tebow’s acts are unique, but they are not.

Albert Pujols

Cris Carter

Bobby Bonds

Watch carefully during the baseball season and see how many players cross themselves as they come to bat. See how many point skyward after something positive. Watch during a football game and see how many players take a knee after a score.

Tebow speaks openly about his religion, but he does not proselytize. So why is he such a target for liberals?

It is because he is white and Christian. There’s no way Maher or any of the other twits critical of Tebow would cast insults if Tebow was Muslim.

Tim Tebow created a charity foundation that works in part to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. He spent his signing bonus on charity donations. He spends the off-season doing charity work in the Philippines. You can get a sense of his other efforts here.

Bill Maher, on the other hand, has spent his time boosting his net worth to $23 million. His good works know no limits. Maher has donated an item for auction to benefit “Save the Chimps.”

Tebow is not to be derided- he is to be admired. By all accounts he is a great person.

So they all ought to get off his back- especially Maher. Maher is a perfect example of what’s wrong with the liberal culture. He’s pompously vulgar and disrespectful while spitting all over the likes of Tim Tebow and all that’s right with America.

Hitchens was right:

Maher fans are morons.

Maher is a hatemonger and a bigot. Nothing more.

It is simple, and the same phenomenon we saw with Sarah Palin. Liberals hate and fear anyone who displays authentic goodness not only in their speech, which liberals can mimic, but in their lives, at which liberals suck.
Leftwingers hate Tebow because he walks the walk they aren’t up to walking themselves

If we conservatives would boycott Maher’s sponsors and his outlet, he would die on the vine.

the liberals have many HORRIBLE HORNS, AND BILL MAHER IS ONE OF THEM HORNS,
A DISGUSTING PERSON WITH A CROOKED TONGUE, A VERY DANGEROUS ONE AMONG DANGEROUS LIBS,
what get them is that TEBOW IS A CAN’T SWAY FROM WHAT HE BELIEVE, no matter the attacks directed on him,

A month or so ago, I came across a great story about a young man named Josh Ripley, a high school athlete who, strong in his faith helped a hurt competitor during a cross country meet, throwing away his chance at winning a championship or glory and instead showing the leadership that faith in one’s God can deliver. I wrote the following about this great young man ( I’ve changed the name to Tim whom it must be noted gives so much of himself to his fellow man also!) for my comment. Both of these give young men. while proudly professing their faith, live by it! Both show leadership! Both give of themselves. One is rich and famous, the other a high school athlete. Yet both are the kind of men I am happy that my kids, grandkids and I look up to! As such, the folks who insist in belittling Tim and others should get their heads out of their collective behinds! How I wish the scum in Washington from our so called President to the rest of the establishment scum we call leaders could just once show the qualities of Tim Tebow or Josh Ripley!

“In this young man, we see what not only a true leader is, not only what a hero is, but in fact we see the very essence of what makes real Americans what they are. Here we have a young man, who gives of himself for his fellow man. He prays to his God, adhering to his faith as all good men do. His humanity takes over and he casts aside his own aspirations. In every quality, this young man shows us what a man is and from my point of view, he is thousands of times the man (or woman as I am speaking of character here) our President, so many elected officials and the members of the MSM can ever hope to be. Character, something of which there is a complete lack of in people who we stupidly call leaders and advisers!

Tim, you give us hope! Thank You from one who now and then seems to think there isn’t any hope left. With great young men and women like this, we can in fact save this country. We still have the nucleus of a great country. We can still be the America we were always meant to be.

Hi Bees! You’ll see lots more of me now. Thanks again for caring and worrying!

I think your comment on TEBOW was outstanding, and I’m glad to know you will come more often,
and I WISH you the best NEW YEAR OF ALL,
BYE

Maher exposes the hypocrisy of the extremists in religion. As did Hitchens, who was on his show often. He was booed once and made that comment about his audience. Some people (like you) should make the truth their religion.

I have no problem with religion. I am a believer. I am a liberal who takes offense to asinine comments from idiots like hinckleybuzzard. Many who are religious think public displays and grandiose proselytizing, especially by millionaire sports figures with IQ’s of a flea, as egregious and tacky. Tebow should take it to the locker room

liberalmann
yes you’re past the redemption time, you’re so ingrained in socialistic behavior, where all are alike,
you are doom like a dummy who is lost and can’t think for himself, doomed to repeat the words
of those small shot mahers so limited, they think they are smart and they’re all alike the other, robotic behaviors stuck in their close minds,
unable to figure those who are their own self, no copy like you, they are unique human being,
they aspire for the higher humanity where only GOD IS above them, that’s not your case,
don’t turn your head to quick so to not crack it more than it is.
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Here in Texas it is required that you stop and scrape the Bill Maher off your boots before entering someones house.

@liberalchild: Evidently you were absent on the day in kindergarten when they taught that if you can’t say something nice about someone, you should say nothing at all. That would probably render you mute if you were to adopt that practice, liberalchild.

How unfortunate for you that there isn’t a fatherless child for you to denigrate and then refuse to apologize.

It is easy to see why you are such a fan of Maher’s, as they say, birds of a feather…

@liberalmann:

Most of the liberal detractors who are making big brouhaha and taking offense like to cite Matthew 6:6:

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.”

But that does not frown down on public prayer- it criticizes those who make a public show of it, for appearances sake and praise, rather than sincerity in praying.

From everything I can tell, Tebow is sincere in his devotion to his faith. As Dr. J points out, “this millionaire sports figure with an IQ of a flea”, as you put it, is using his celebrity and notoriety for good causes that help people. Just check out this video and tell me he doesn’t come across as a swell guy and devout, earnest Christian. And I love one of the top comments:

I think Tebow is overated as a QB even though he “wins games”. That said I don’t? get the hate for him. Because of religion? So what he has every right to believe what he does, he doesn’t shove it down our throats the media is doing that. Because he’s subpar? He’s not that bad there’s far worse. How about people judge his character for once? Just watch this damn clip he’s a genuinly nice guy. Meanwhile the NFL is full of douchebags and a-holes who don’t get nearly as much heat.”

Tebow isn’t doing this for show, pushing his religion on the general public. He’s doing it for himself. The media just happen to be there to draw attention to it and make a story out of it. He gets down on one knee. So what? Would it help if he were a secularist doing this act and not praying to God? Would you then no longer take offense? Because what’s the difference to you when other players have their own ritualistic acts, showboating, victory-dancing and whatnot after a touchdown? What’s the difference? Why aren’t you criticizing that they are “proselytizing secularism”? Why does it matter to you if a player thanks Mom, luck, his own self, or God?

Comment of the week:

Athiests are free to practice their “non-religion”, but they should do it in the privacy of their own homes. It would also be nice if they would stop forcing their beliefs down everyone’s throats.

Haven’t seen Maher in years, and don’t care to.

At 20 seconds into this video you hear about the double-parking, even triple-parking blocking the whole street when hundreds of cabbies all stop in the middle of the street (“I have to pray. I have no choice but to break the rules.”) to go to Mosque to pray.
http://www.wpix.com/news/wpix-muslim-cabbie-prayer,0,176094.story
Not a sour note from liberals about this.

But let a baseball player raise his hands to heaven as he crosses home plate, or a basketball player point to heaven after a basket or this guy, a football player, bowing for a moment, and they are all over them!

Wordsmith is correct about sincere displaying of faith, VS egotistical religiousity.
I wonder if it is simply that Christians are such easy targets.
What are they going to do except turn the other cheek?

Meantime, what happens when Muslims, like those cabbies in New York are even attempted to be corralled into obeying the law?

A neighborhood feud has developed between cab drivers and residents on the Upper West Side. Cabbies say they are being targeted for their religion — and they’re fighting back.
“It’s only like half an hour. We’re not blocking for all the day!” driver Berhoumi el Nour said.
But after a number of complaints to 311 police have begun enforcing the rules to an extent.
On Friday, Brown found several traffic cops patrolling to prevent cabbies from double parking, but allowing them to leave their cars in “No Standing” zones.
Cabbie Mohamed Ali said he was arrested when he confronted police after being ticketed.http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2011/12/09/upper-west-side-parking-dispute-breaks-out-between-muslim-cab-drivers-residents/#comments
(GREAT Comments after this article, btw.)

WORDSMITH
you always explain it better, thank you for that,
A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU.

As a non-believer, I simply stand with those who would protect our country against being any further over-run by the mythological belief system of Christianity. Fortunately, although about 80 – 90% of Americans still believe in god—depending on the survey—according to a study by Baylor Univerity,

“… since Americans agree on basic religion indicators, American religion seems monolithic. In fact, under the surface American religion is startlingly complex and diverse. Americans may agree that God exists. They do not agree about what God is like, what God wants for the world, or how God feels about politics [or about sin]. Most Americans pray. They differ widely on to whom they pray, what they pray about, and whether or not they say grace. A vast majority of Americans are Christians, but attitudes amongst those Christians regarding the salvation of others, the role of religion in government, the reality of the paranormal, and their consumption of media are surprisingly diverse.” 1
[http://www.religioustolerance.org/godnature.htm]

This article shows that although most people cannot find it inside themselves to move beyond a belief in god, at least a good many have move away from a traditional, theistic god—and this is progress. And, in my estimation, this kind of progress is only wrought through the work of atheistic and agnostic voice in demonstration.

Liberal1[objectivity]
oh ya, getting JESUS AND GOD AND THE FLAG AND THE CONSTITUTION OUT OF SCHOOLS
is showing that it fail to improve knowledge and brain power in the students, it showing a monolistic way of thinking like a robotic behavior only responding to BIG BROTHER TELEPROMPTER SPEECHS AND VISUAL MEDIAS PROPAGANDA SUBLIMINAL MESSAGES, EMPOWERING CROWDS TO HATE WHICH EVER ARE NOT METALLISTIC SOUNDS LIKE THEM, THEREFOR SPLITTING THE BEAUTIFULL AMERICA INTO MULTIPLE PART OF DIFFERENT HATERS, WITH ARE NOT ABLE TO CONCENTRATE FURTHER THAN WHAT LIES THEY ARE BEING TOLD, EVEN IF IT HIT THEM IN THE RESONATE BONG OF THEIR NOSE,
GOD ALONE KNOWS WHICH HOLE THIS AMERICA WILL FALL IF ONLY THOSE CONTINUE TO LIVE IN THIS WHITE HOUSE,
WE GET WARNING FROM THE SMART CONSERVATIVES, ALL OVER, THERE IS NO EXCUSE TO REMAIN IGNORANT,
even if you know how to use a keyboard, you are still ignorant.

@ Liberal1 (objectivity):
I don’t doubt the studies. I don’t think people’s faith in God is failing, but rather faith in organized religion. But you don’t need religion to have faith. I’m Catholic, and although my faith in the Church’s leaders may come into question, my faith in God and the Church has not.
I have some friends that are agnostic. At least they are not stupid enough to be atheist. All I have to say to atheist is:
If I’m wrong, I wasted a little bit of my time; but if you are wrong…

As a non-believer, I simply stand with those who would protect our country against being any further over-run by the mythological belief system of Christianity.

Thank you for proving us right about people like you. You are intolerant bigots with a need to dominate and control others.

@liberalmann:

Maher exposes the hypocrisy of the extremists in religion.

Who really defines what is extreme? I can see calling religion extreme if it causes you to return to a hospital which treated you in order to kill the Jews there–that’s extreme. I don’t quite see how T. is quite that extreme. Wasn’t there a time when quarterbacks and pass receivers would make a touchdown, and then they would do a little dance? Do you liberals really want to go down the road of defining just exactly what behavior is acceptable and what is not, when the behavior, at worst, just makes a statement?

millionaire sports figures with IQ’s of a flea

Most of us were simply born with the IQ that we have. Are you saying that, because your IQ is higher than T’s that you are a better person? A more worthy person?

@Liberal1 (objectivity):

As a non-believer, I simply stand with those who would protect our country against being any further over-run by the mythological belief system of Christianity.

I must say, you exhibit the absolute worst tendencies of a liberal, desiring to protect us from our own thinking.

There are 4 men who testified as to the person and work of Jesus Christ, 2 of whom were eyewitnesses. Some of the copies extant of what they wrote come from the 1st and 2nd centuries. There is no person in, say, pre-1500 AD history who is better testified to than Jesus Christ. If you think that we ought to throw out all the historical records of Jesus, then you must be willing to throw away all that we know about ancient history, because no person and no set of events is more carefully attested to than His public ministry.

@Liberal1 (objectivity):

This article shows that although most people cannot find it inside themselves to move beyond a belief in god, at least a good many have move away from a traditional, theistic god—and this is progress.

The United States was founded upon strong believers in Jesus Christ. When our schools were developed, one of their purposes was to teach the Bible. In fact, many could see no reason for our schools unless the Bible was taught.

You liberals have had a field day in the public school system. You have done everything possible to take God out of the public school, and, as a result, we have drugs, violence, horrible attitudes, and pathetic academic standards. Have you ever read a math textbook from, say, 80 years ago for the 7th grade? Most high school seniors would be incapable of handling the work.

So, liberal enlightenment in our schools, and tons of tax dollars, has resulted in inferior standards and inferior students and inferior teachers.

You call yourself objective. By what objective measure do you look at schools today and say, “These schools are so much better now that we got God out of them” ?

@hinckleybuzzard:

actually…we liberals “hate” Tebow because of all the “praise” he gets from right-wing bigots and fear-mongers like yourself. i don’t care what Tebow “believes”…i simply can’t stand the applause he gets for being vain and narcissistic. he’s not a good NFL QB…and i don’t care what religion he follows. i live in America…where we ALL have the 1st Amendment Freedom of Speech. you don’t like what Maher said…tough. he has every right to…just like the right of Tebow to express his beliefs.

don’t be a hypocrite. just get over the fact that your good-lookin’ Jesus-lovin’ poster boy isn’t liked by everyone, because not all Americans are “Christian” and being “Christian” alone does not make you better. there are plenty of BETTER men (and women) in this nation (and world) who deserve more praise for the good they actually do for humantiy. don’t give me garbage about Tebow’s missionary work. don’t give me the spin on his “charitable donations”

just admit that the only reason you love him is because he’s “Christian”

if he wasn’t…he’d be just another good athlete who gets more attention than he deserves. the media…and people like you…give this “man” more credit than he deserves. he is NOT Jesus. he’s just a man.

let it go.

Tebow’s a good kid with some wonderful charitable causes. A great college q.b. with the Gators, but at best an average Q.B. in the NFL Old pros like Brees,Brady and Rodgers will be schooling him for years.
Rookies like Newton and Stafford are better.

C Andrew Scott, way to prove Hinckley Buzzard right. If you had any sense of shame you wouldn’t have posted such a hateful screed. Then again, if you had any sense of shame, you wouldn’t be a leftist.

just admit that the only reason you love him is because he’s “Christian”

How about you admitting you only hate him because he’s Christian? We know it’s true.

@Hard Right: not at all sure what you mean by “proving him right”

“sense of shame”? hardly. i’ve read more “hate” here in your comments against “leftists” and wonder why all people can’t just live by the Golden Rule.

i think it’s sad that so many people feel the need to defend Tebow…and attack those of us who simply “don’t care”

i think many of you need a lesson in history. i think you forget what country you actually live in.

@Hard Right: actually…”HardRight”…i don’t “hate” Tebow because he’s Christian…i “dislike” him because he’s supported by narrow-minded bigots who are intolerant to share this great nation with those of us who have other beliefs.

i “dislike” his supporters because they are hypocrites.

if you had any “shame” you’d understand that your response only supported MY argument.

narrow-minded bigots

Project much?
I merely point out your traits and you show how right I am about you and others like you.

You’re intolerant.
No – you’re intolerant.
Repeat.

@C Andrew Scott: Hating Tebow because someone
else likes him is beyond idiotic.

@Hard Right: actually, HardRight…i consider myself an “open-minded” bigot. but again…you point fingers at those who oppose you and put your own beliefs above all.

if Tebow were gay or Muslim…would you still support him for “standing up for what he believes”? doubtful. which supports my argument that the only reason right-wing Americans like the mediocre quarterback is because he’s “Christian”

C Andrew Scott
so, you hate or you dislike or you don’t want to be told about JESUS OR TEBOW,
because you hate his supporters, who encourage him, when he praise the LORD,
SO WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING HERE FOR, DID YOU READ THE POST?
MAY GOD BLESS AMERICA

@drjohn: drjohn…i don’t think you quite understand my argument. it’s not BECAUSE people “like” him that i have a problem with…it’s that people are putting him on a pedestal JUST because of his beliefs.

is he the ONLY “Christian” in the NFL? in all of sports? in all of America? hardly…yet he’s become the poster-child for a new pro-Christian campaign that i find offensive. do i not, as an American citizen, have the right to my own beliefs and the right to voice them? aboslutely. no different than Tebow.

you want to imply that i’m “idiotic”…ok. you have the right to believe that.

i commented originally…because while so many of you are quick to attack Maher for his words…i wonder how many of you “see” and “hear” what you and your peers are saying.

you love Tebow for “walking the walk”? maybe you should start following his lead if you believe him to be such a great role model. blasting “leftists” simply because we disagree with you…doesn’t make you look better. just makes you look human.

People who don’t know a D-back from a wide receiver are touting this guy and giving him miraculous powers simply because he’s a religion on his sleeve Christion RiDICULOUS.
I find it absurd that any athlete thanks God for a winning touchdown or 3 point shot.

Separation of Church and Football

@ilovebeeswarzone: do you “hate” people who disbelieve in your god? do you “hate” people who have the right to their own beliefs…and exercise them? do you “hate” me, because i am “leftist”?

do you “hate” Muslims or Jews who want to share their beliefs? what about American who are gay? what about Americans who are Democratic?

do you “hate” everything you disagree with?

i don’t.

and why am i here? perhaps because i’m not so closed-minded that i only read and comment on blogs that support my ideas. perhaps because i want to read and hear the other side. perhaps because i AM tolerant enough to give EVERYONE the chance to defend themselves.

so…riddle me this. WHY do you “love” Tim Tebow?

C Andrew Scott, it is so amusing you come here spewing hatered, intolerance, and stereotypes yet have less than zero insight into your own hypocrisy. You assume we hate homosexuals and Muslims. You assume we only like Tebow because he’s a Christian. That we must never have heard views other than our own here or elsewhere. So on and so forth…
You are exactly what you claim to hate in others.

You are a closed minded bigot and your hate overfloweth.

@Hard Right: again…your response only supports my claim.

WHY do you “love” Tebow? please…enlighten my “closed” mind. explain to me why you “love” him that has NOTHING to do with his religious beliefs.

C Andrew Scott
actually I don’t hate you or anyone else,
but if my friends like TEBOWS
It’s okay with me, and I hate the comments negatives on TEBOW, and his supporters because it’s spreading the liberal’s hate that has spread on every inches of this GREAT AMERICA, YOU SIDE IS IN POWER BECAUSE OF ; IT’S BUSH’S FAULT, AND STILL IN POWER spreading hate anything else as long as it’s HATE,
and I hate to have my friends, the smart CONSERVATIVES, SO VERY TOLERANT, LISTENING TO YOU’RE HATE FEELINGS BEING EXPRESS, IN THESE DAYS OF CHRISTIAN’S RECONNECTING WITH THE MEMORY OF THE BIRTH OF JESUS SON OF GOD THE CREATOR OF ALL YOU SEE AND DON’T SEE.AND
NOBODY IS SHOVING IT IN YOUR THOAT
HAPPY NEW YEAR

Simple. He seems like a good person.

Frankly C Andrew Scott, you sound like you are off your meds or something.
So what if someone does like him because he’s a good Christian? I find it very telling that “tolerant” leftists like yourself are absolutely rabid over him and his supporters.

@Hard Right: and that is a fine answer…and one i can completely respect. it’s short…to the point…and appropriate.

@Hard Right: hmmm? i see that my point it being obviously ignored.

is it wrong to like him simply because he’s “Christian”? no…not at all. i’m sure there are plenty of Christian Americans who adore him for receiving publicity. but that’s my point entirely. to “like” him simply because of his religious beliefs…and NOT because he’s “standing up for his beliefs” seems hypocritical to me. if Tebow were Muslim…would you also support his rights? if he were gay? if he were Satanic??

no…to say you like him because he “seems like a good guy” is fine. to say you like him because he’s “Christian”…that’s your right. but don’t claim it’s a sign of “tolerance” on your part. and i AM sorry if i’ve wrongly clumped you and yours in a stereotypical bunch (i read so much hatespeak about “liberals” and “leftists” who are perceived as trying to “destroy American values”), but even in this forum i read hate towards the left (i.e. those who don’t share YOUR beliefs).

you want to call me a “bigot”…that’s fine. my friends…Christian, Muslim, Jewish, straight, gay, republican, democrat…they know me. and they know what i’m saying is true.

i do not “hate” or “dislike” those who do not agree with me. i give them a voice. i respect their rights. can you say that you also do the same?

am i guilty of “assumptions”? perhaps…but no more guilty than you, i’m afraid.

on that note…good day to all. make it a great one.

@Gary Kukis: “The United States was founded upon strong believers in Jesus Christ.”

I’d be interested on your citation for this.

C Andrew Scott
yes you are guilty of assuming and trying to put words of hate in our mouths, all along your comments,
that would have got you a real punishment in the CHURCH CONFESSIONAL WHERE ONE TELL
ALL THEIR SINS TO THE HOLY MAN BEHIND THE SCREEN.
BYE

I’m agnostic myself, but I have no problem with people liking him for being Christian or for openly living his beliefs. I do have a problem with those that hate him for those reasons.
It seems many people and liberals that hate him, hate him for those reasons.

@liberalmann:

Many who are religious think public displays and grandiose proselytizing, especially by millionaire sports figures with IQ’s of a flea, as egregious and tacky. Tebow should take it to the locker room.

I trust you would declare this to be egregious and tacky on a galactic scale.

@drjohn:
Dr. John, that was liberalwoman that posted that.

EDIT: I see you got it. It gets hard keeping track of the loons.
