Why WaPo Waited So Long to Publish the Alito Flag Story

The media has been trying to gin up a lot of mileage regarding a report from the New York Times about an American flag being flown upside down outside of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s home. Looking further into the details, that wasn’t something that happened recently. In fact, the photo of the flag was taken more than three years ago, shortly after the Capitol Hill riots. So how did it take so long for us to hear about it, assuming you’re even concerned to begin with? As it turns out, the Washington Post had the photo and the story almost immediately. But as the Associated Press pointed out yesterday, the editors at the Post opted not to run the story. This all sounds like much ado over (almost) nothing, but given all of the current antipathy on the left toward the conservative members of the court, we’re probably going to keep hearing about it, so we should dig a bit further into the details.

Nine days after The New York Times reported about the political symbolism of an upside-down American flag that flew at U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito’s home, the Washington Post acknowledged it had the same story more than three years ago and decided not to publish it.

The Post’s story was both an extraordinary example of journalistic introspection and an illustration of how coverage of the Supreme Court has changed since the incident itself, shortly after the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.

That day, some of the demonstrators who marched in support of former President Donald Trump carried the upside-down flag. Both newspapers reported that the same symbol was displayed outside of Alito’s home in Fairfax County, Virginia, before President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

This episode raises questions about how the media has handled this story at various stages and whether or not the underlying incident was really all that big of a deal to begin with. The WaPo claims that they originally examined the story but concluded that “it appeared Alito’s wife was responsible and that it was not clear the neighborhood argument was over politics.” This is in response to Justice Alito’s claim that his wife hung the flag that way as a message to neighbors who had put disparaging signs about the Alitos near their property. Frankly, that sounds pretty unlikely to me, but unless someone can track down those neighbors and interview them, we may never know.

But if that was true three years ago, then how did the New York Times determine it was an appropriate story to run now? The Gray Lady is claiming that they only acquired the photo “recently.” Does that sound very likely? If someone has what appears to be a potentially hot bit of gossip about a Supreme Court justice and it went to the Post, how would it not also be slipped to the Times? I would argue that both of the papers had the story three years ago, but elected to keep it in their back pockets. But now that we’re drawing close to a presidential election where Joe Biden is trailing and trying to warn people about the potential of Donald Trump appointing more justices in the mold of Alito, the MSM probably sees more usefulness in putting the story out there. The AP piles on a bit by posing the question, “Should a public official’s family be held to the same standards as that official themselves?”

Whether Alito or his wife hung the flag like that probably doesn’t matter all that much. If Alito did hang it himself in sympathy for the January 6 rioters, then he’s making up a story now to cover his tracks. If his wife really did hang it, unless he never went out of his front door, he would have seen it. If it bothered him that much he could have taken it down, but apparently he didn’t.

They held onto it for a time when it could be used to their evil advantage. The democrats are despot pack the court so they can use to courts to punish political opposition.

“They held onto it for a time when it could be used to their evil advantage.”

Tough titty. If this had been done by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, you people would have been all over this every day for months.

The Alito household clearly hates America. Deal with it.

What an incisive argument!

It’s the same one Robin Ware/Robert L. Peters/JRB Ware/Pedo Peter/idiot Biden’s new campaign representative, DeNiro, uses. I guess he thought you’d like it.

Exactly! Her only care and consideration is maintaining her stupid self as First Lady. She is a hag.

The Alito household clearly hates America. Deal with it.

You mean, because they show concern for the country and the uncivil state of interaction while showing faith and support for the nation, it means they hate it? Gee, that’s a pretty unique interpretation.

You mean by AOC’s WIFE, because Justice Alito didn’t do it, his WIFE did.
And we all know that liberal men and liberated women are famous for not telling one another what to do or not do, right?

Sandy doesn’t even know how to operate a garbage disposal. How would anyone expect her to raise a flag?

They had to wait until their failures piled up to the point that they were utterly desperate. This is such a weak attempt at subverting the Court that it’s pathetic.

…according to people who still answer calls from toll free numbers.

You think he’s more popular with people who DON’T answer toll-free numbers? They are paying 30% more to live than they did under Trump, too.

The point is that the polls are skewed in Trump’s favor because more stupid people pick up the calls.

Sure thats it, or maybe their cars warranty need renewal…sheesh.

Really? Where is your research on that? Maybe the stupid people (Robin Ware/Robert L. Congratulations to United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for showing the INTELLIGENCE, COURAGE, and “GUTS” to refuse stepping aside from making a decision on anything January 6th related. All U.S. Judges, Justices, and Leaders should have such GRIT – Our Country would be far more advanced than its current status as A BADLY FAILING NATION, headed by the Worst President in American History, Crooked Joe Biden!

The Washington Compost is like the New York Slimes leftists Propaganda not news they just wait for the right time

All this is about is the Democrats can’t face the consequences of their failures. Due to Obama having been a monumental and corrupt failure and their terrible, hateful candidates, Trump became President. Trump did a GREAT job, including putting three Justices on the Supreme Court that have actually read the Constitution realize their job is to apply it, not revise it. This means that any of the left’s issues to go before the court are going to be viewed through Constitutional lenses, which does NOT serve the left’s agenda.

The left’s solution? Try and force the Constitutional Justices off the bench. Force them to leave or, at least, recuse themselves to give their leftist, revisionist, interpretive Justices more impact. Thus a major panties-twisting over a) the universal symbol of the nation in distress and b) an historic flag that invokes faith and loyalty to the nation. This is supposed to take Justice Alito out. The fact that Justice Thomas’ wife has a mind of her own and he has actual friends is supposed to eliminate him. They are supposed to recuse themselves in any case that the Democrats need decided in their favor, such as the political assault on opposition candidates and throwing any political dissident that doesn’t agree with the far, far leftist agenda in jail by the hundreds.

Is this a common practice? Do Democrats routinely recuse themselves whenever they have a conflict of interest? Well, no. They don’t. In fact, even when they have a DISTINCT and CLEAR conflict of interest, not just some oblique, opaque interpretation that MIGHT be considered some obscure conflict, they don’t really give it much thought. Justice Sotomayor ruled on a case concerning a publisher that had paid her millions of dollars, but she didn’t recuse.

No possible doubt about it, this is nothing but a political pity party, Democrats whining, crying and throwing tantrums because, for once, they don’t control all elements of an issue.

The Most Dangerous Part Of The NYT Alito Flag Meltdown Is The Politicization Of Patriotism

On Tuesday, the Times published another smear piece on Justice Samuel Alito to indict the conservative judge as a partisan ideologue corrupted by far-right politics. The evidence presented to suggest Justice Alito is a right-wing provocateur incapable of serving as an impartial jurist? An “Appeal to Heaven” flag, also known as the Pine Tree flag, with historical roots in the American Revolution, flew outside his New Jersey home on Long Beach Island last summer.

“Last summer, two years after an upside-down American flag was flown outside the Virginia home of Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., another provocative symbol was displayed at his vacation house in New Jersey,” the Times reported. “This time, it was the ‘Appeal to Heaven’ flag, which, like the inverted U.S. flag, was carried by rioters at the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.”

Ah, yes. The flag is considered a symbol of extremism now because a few people carried the flag to the Capitol for an hours-long demonstration three years ago. If only The New York Times applied the same rules to the militant anarchists who terrorized the nation in 2020 under rainbow banners of identity politics.

Will The New York Times publish a follow-up story chronicling the extremism on display at congressional offices hanging the “progress pride flag?” What about at the State Department? Or K-12 classrooms? Should the generic rainbow pride flag be considered a symbol of virulent extremism?

No, even if some who drape themselves in the colors act increasingly extreme. The media, however, have a toxic habit of tying the masses to the loudest voices who’ve embraced their respective banners, whether it be a couple of crazy teachers obsessed with virtue signaling or a group of wannabe revolutionaries on Jan. 6.

According to The New York Times, the fabricated flag debacle now drawing hysterical headlines across the corporate press demands Justice Alito recuse himself from several high-profile cases central to thwarting Donald Trump’s third bid for the White House. Last week, the Times published a separate story highlighting an upside-down flag signaling a nation in distress three years ago amid the turbulent month of President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

The manipulated flag, however, was flown by Alito’s wife following an argument with a neighbor over a profane anti-Trump sign, and there is no evidence to the contrary. Even if the justice had hung the flag himself, it would be no grounds for recusal. Still, the most dangerous aspect of the New York Times’ latest flag hysteria isn’t even the attacks on the Supreme Court, but the politicization of patriotism itself.

Alito’s banner to “Appeal to Heaven” was designed by George Washington’s personal secretary and was adopted by the colonial military in 1775, becoming the official flag of the Massachusetts Navy in 1776. The text was inspired by British political philosopher John Locke, whose ideas became the foundation for American independence. According to The New York Times, “Justice Alito declined to respond to questions about the beach house flag, including what it was intended to convey and how it comported with his obligations as a justice.”

The fact The New York Times is writing to millions of readers who likely live in online echo chambers that the Pine Tree flag “conveys” anything but a patriotic message of democratic resilience warrants an American flag flown in distress on its own. And it’s not just the Pine Tree flag that’s now written off as an overt symbol of extremism. Just about every other flag with historical roots in the American fight for independence has now become the target of far-left attacks as banners of radical opposition. A nation steeped in self-hatred, where patriotism itself is written off as extreme, will not survive as a governable nation. And even if the nation does survive, it won’t be “united.”

Last year’s Gallup poll reported the number of U.S. adults who say they are “extremely proud” to be American remains near a record low, at just 39 percent. The number is down more than 30 percent from 20 years ago, when 70 percent said they were “extremely proud” to be American. One would hope that number will be 100 percent on Monday, when the nation collectively remembers the nearly 1.4 million who died in service of our country. Meanwhile, Flag Day is approaching on June 14. The New York Times better brace itself for an outbreak of extremism.
