When Doonesbury Went from Stupid to Completely Insane

I became a semi-fan of Doonesbury as a kid via my older brothers. I obviously didn’t get most of the political humor, but there was enough non political content to get my interest. Eventually I’d be able to appreciate most of the content directed at Reagan all the way through Dubya. And like every lefty remotely connected to entertainment, author Garry Trudeau’s sense of humor evaporated once Barry O became President. After a few recent particularly crazy Sunday comics aimed at President Trump I remembered having written about Doonesbury a while back. It turned out that would have been back in 2010:

I stopped reading Doonesbury a few years ago. During the Bush presidency the strip became little more than the rants of an aging, bitter leftist. His strips (outside of his regular characters) could be boiled down to five themes:
Hatred for Bush
Hatred for Fox News
Hatred for Bush
Hatred for Schwarzenegger
Hatred for Bush

Like all Leftist political humor, it just got boring and predictable. I’d occasionally check it, and since being married to Sister Babe I now see Doonesbury in the comics section of the Sunday Washington Compost. And yes, out of morbid curiosity I do read the strip, but now it’s for a view into a mind that is viscously infected with Trump Derangement Syndrome. Two recent “comics” caught my attention. I’d post the comics themselves here, but to avoid any copyright issues I’ll embed tweets that contain them.

The more recent 5/12  strip shows a couple going through their bills, trying to figure out how to make ends meet. Wait a minute, is this hard leftist actually attacking Bidenflation*? Of course, the last panel gets back on track, and we learn that this family is neglecting to feed their kids to send a few dollars to help pay President Trump’s legal bills. Wait, seriously? I did a quick check online and couldn’t even find any related anecdotes, but if Trudeau wants to throw down a missed dunking to bring attention to the disaster that Bidenomics* has been for America, have at it:

The second comic in question appeared on 4/28, focusing on Elias, the military psychologist who got introduced about twenty years ago to help BD and other vets through PTSD. Now Elias has adopted another favorite Lefty theme from the Trump Presidency, namely long distance psych evaluations. This particular comic wants to direct us to the undeniable mental decline of… Donald Trump. Yes, seriously. See for yourself:

Yes, that’s the big dunk for Trudeau – Donald Trump is the one mentally impaired, not another prominent public figure who’s cognitive decline becomes more apparent with every public appearance. But by all means, Garry, you go ahead and make the subject of presidential candidates being mentally unfit for office a topic of national discussion. What’s next, will Trudeau make a subject  out of shady business dealings, mishandling of classified documents, or behaving inappropriately around women?

Doonesbury has always been one of the worst of the Liberal Drawn Leftists Political Strips along with The Boondocks just remember their Reagans Brain Strips then Trump. Trudeau is just about a Democrat Bootlicker as ever

Boondocks was a fun comic strip early on but they jumped off the deep end too. If I remember right it happened @ 9/11

I used to read it just because it was one of the comics. Sometimes it was kind of funny. But during the Bush years, it just turned stupid. Like much of the leftist “humor” we see today, in order to have something to hate about conservatives (and then, ultimately, focused solely on Trump) that have to make grievances up, THEN hate THOSE. Now, it is all nothing short of delusionally pathetic.

Fair point. If you hate things like truth, goodness, beauty, tradition, family, faith, etc. then you don’t have to make stuff up to dislike us Normals

This right here. It had its moments, it could be amusing, but with Bush and the ’00 election Trudeau — like so many others — lost his connection to reality, a hold that gave up for good once Trump won. Indeed, my first thought on reading this article headline was, “that rubbish is still in production??”

Yeah, I remember Doonesbury’s trajectory between Dubya/Barry O/Trump of stupid/boring/crazy.
Has there ever been an aging Leftist who’s not miserable, insane, or both?
