The left wing media is playing checkers. Trump is playing chess.

Well, they finally did it. The left wing media got its wish. It got hold of a Trump tax return. Leaking tax returns is a felony, but we’ll not dwell on that. Instead, let’s remember that a few days ago someone whose name rhymes with stickolas pistoff urged the IRS to illegally leak Donald Trump’s tax return and voila! it got leaked and Rachel Maddow pounced.

With great fanfare she tweeted:

Be careful what you wish for, as the saying goes.

Her monumental scoop turned her into a monumental pooper scooper.

On her Tuesday show, Rachel Maddow teased a scoop: She had Donald Trump’s 2005 tax returns. It was the first time his federal returns would be released.

Small digression: MSNBC’s Maddow didn’t have them. Investigative reporter David Cay Johnston got them, and went on her show to talk about it.

Anyway, when she finally revealed what was in the taxes, it was not a huge deal. Trump earned about $150 million in income in 2005, and paid $38 million in taxes, thanks to the alternative minimum tax, which he wants to kill.

Of course, CNBC had to add:

This gives Trump an effective tax rate of about 24 percent, which Johnston pointed out was roughly equal to what he and his wife, who are an upper middle class couple, pay.

Thing is, it’s a much higher rate than paid by either barack obama or Bernie Sanders. The democrat socialist icon, Senator Freebie, paid a paltry 13% in taxes.

And also let us hark back to some of the things thrown at Trump. Hillary Clinton:

During the September 26, 2016 presidential debate, Democratic presidential nominee former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton speculated that one reason Donald Trump might not have released his tax returns is that “he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes.”

Clinton said, “So you’ve gotta ask yourself, why won’t he release his tax returns? And I think there may be a couple of reasons. First, maybe he’s not as rich as he says he is. Second, maybe he’s not as charitable as he claims to be. Third, we don’t know all of his business dealings, but we have been told, through investigative reporting that, he owes about $650 million to Wall Street and foreign banks. Or maybe he doesn’t want the American people, all of you watching tonight, to know that he’s paid nothing in federal taxes. Because the only years that anybody has ever seen, were a couple of years where he had to turn them over to state authorities when he was trying to get a casino license. And they showed he didn’t pay any federal income tax.”

The NY Times:

The New York Times reporters wrote: “Donald J. Trump declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns, a tax deduction so substantial it could have allowed him to legally avoid paying any federal income taxes for up to 18 years, records obtained by The New York Times show.”

What this episode does is effectively kill the “How much did Trump pay in taxes?” story. Trump paid $38 million in taxes for 2005, most of it in the form of the Alternative Minimum Tax. Once you know Trump has liability under the AMT, you can be pretty much certain that he will be subject to it every year. That means he pays his fair share.

Back to Slate:

Trump’s tax returns, whatever information they happen to contain, constitute a major scoop. Maddow’s social media team ensured the highest possible ratings for that scoop. But if ever a story should have been delivered in a stentorian, fuddy-duddy, nonpartisan manner, this was it. In positioning it as a grand revelation, a vital step in comprehending Trump’s corruption, MSNBC created an exceedingly cynical spectacle. By playing into the network’s loyal liberal audience’s fantasy that there exists a Trump silver bullet, it instead delivered Trump a positive news cycle—the guy pays taxes! Who knew!—amidst the debacle of the AHCA, along with more evidence that the media is aligned against him.

Maddow’s debacle was widely mocked. Among my favorites:

As has been noted on this site already, one cannot help but recall this epic moment:

Rachel Maddow has long been a smarmy and smug know it all. All I can say is

Schadenfreude! Paging Mr. Schadenfruede!

We’ve learned something today. We learned once again that while the left wing media is playing checkers, Donald Trump is playing chess.

@Richard Wheeler: The dems and their left wing cohorts opened a HUGE can of worms when they accused Trump (and you know he was not my favorite) of colluding with the Russians to steal the election. Now they are chasing their tails because Trump accused Obama of ordering a wiretap. In order for the charge of collusion to be proven or disproven, some form of electronic surveillance would have had to have taken place because they would have needed communications between the two. Once the investigation is done and the results are reported confirming or denying the charges, the next question will be- based on what evidence? And therein lies the problem for those who started this.

@another vet: John Dean is calling this another Watergate—I always believed him to be telling the truth–and I was right

The left has been investigating Trump for YEARS based on what they WANTED to find. What does it say that they have NOTHING to produce? Does anyone believe if there was ANY dirt it would not have been revealed during the campaign?

If there was no White House initiated wiretapping, that is the ONLY crime they didn’t commit. I really don’t think they skipped that one.

@Richard Wheeler: Perhaps he’s right. Watergate involved an administration wiretapping their opponent. That’s what the allegation is here against the Obama administration. Exactly what crime would Trump be covering up for? Be specific and cite evidence. You have been on a big losing streak since you started predicting the outcome of the primaries and the election. Personally, I’d wait for the facts to come out before convicting anyone but that’s not your style when it comes to people you despise.

@another vet: John Dean says it’s a Watergate cover up He sees the similarities between the two cover-ups. Ask him.–he’s one for one–says DT should lawyer up.

You haven’t yet defined what Repubs mean when yelling “fake news”
How bout definining Repubs new favorite “alternative news.”

BTW It wasn’t wire tapping that brought Nixon down. It was his ego, his paranoia and his boldfaced lies.

Flynn–Stone–Manafort—“All The President’s Men” ring a bell?

@Richard Wheeler: Some examples of fake news would be:

1. A newspaper reporting on 1/20/2017 that Trump Tower was wiretapped and then reporting after Trump accused Obama that there was no wiretapping. One of those two stories was fake news.

2. Media outlets using D+12 polls to show a presidential candidate (D) with an insurmountable lead knowing full well that the political makeup of the country is nowhere near D+12.

3. The media reporting on a President’s farewell tour whereby he claimed that: there were no terrorist attacks on US. soil during his tenure; there were no scandals in his administration; there were improved race relations on his watch; the country became more unified on his watch, and that the world got safer on his watch all of which are easily verifiable lies and they failed to call him out on it.

As for Nixon, Obama was just as, if not more, paranoid, abusive of his power, and divisive than Nixon. A Republican would have been crucified for a fraction of what he got away with.

As for Dean, that is his opinion. Here are a few more:

1. Former Bush AG Mike Mukasey, who probably recognizes signs of surveillance, believes Trump Tower was surveilled although he doesn’t believe Obama ordered it.

2. Dan Bongino, former Secret Service Agent who knows how the organization operates, believes the Secret Service discovered wiretaps in Trump Tower during a sweep for electronic surveillance devices.

3. Bill Binney, a 36 year veteran of the NSA who helped develop surveillance programs for the organization, said it was a slam dunk that Trump was surveilled.

4. Gary Bernsten, former Director of CIA Operations for 13 years, said Obama used the FBI and NSA to spy on Trump.

5. Larry Johnson, former CIA analyst and former Senior Regional Analyst for Central America, says his sources confirmed Trump was surveilled.

6. Fred Feitz, 25 year veteran of the CIA, DIA, and State Department, claims Trump was surveilled.

Those are six sources who all have experience with electronic surveillance and recognize its signs who claim there was surveillance of the Trump campaign. So if you are going give credibility to Dean for him being able to recognize a cover-up, then these individuals should have just as much credibility when it comes to recognizing when electronic surveillance has been conducted.

You can go ahead and pick the one “expert” who fits your narrative and ignore the other six who don’t. I’ll simply wait for the facts to come out.

@another vet:” one expert”-are you serious AV? Waiting for the facts to come out–why? you won’t believe them–you’re a full on Trumpeteer.
How bout KellyAnne’s “alternative facts”–what the hell is that about?? Where is KellyAnne?
i’m feeling sorry for Spicer–he doesn’t wanna be there.

Re Trump Pride cometh before the fall.

The lunatic so-called President:

People close to the president say Mr. Trump’s Twitter torrent had less to do with fact, strategy or tactic than a sense of persecution bordering on faith: He simply believes that he was bugged in some way, by someone, and that evidence will soon appear to back him up. …

The president, people close to him have said over the last several weeks, has become increasingly frustrated at his inability to control the narrative of his action-packed presidency, after being able to dominate the political discourse or divert criticism by launching one of his signature Twitter attacks.

Faith not in God, but himself.
Blessed are the poor, for they shall inherit the Earth.

@Richard Wheeler: Hilldabeast’s pride came before she got rejected by America!!

@another vet: Nice try but trying to use logic and proof to libturds is a wasted cause!! America recognized who was telling the truth and that is why hilldabeast lost over 3,000 counties to Trump and only won 57!!

@Richard Wheeler:

How bout definining Repubs new favorite “alternative news.”

That phrase was used once and you act as if it is part of the Republican platform.

Republican integrity and journalistic tenacity is what brought Nixon down, something sadly lacking in Democrats or journalists today.

@Bill- Deplorable Me: You say “Republican integrity brought Nixon down.”
Would that be an example of fake news, alternative facts or both?

AV Would certainly agree that attempting to defend DT’S daily tweets is a true waste of time. I’ll see you back when and if he decides to get serious.

@Common Sense:

Nice try but trying to use logic and proof to libturds is a wasted cause!!

You are right on. Time to stop wasting my time. Life is too short to piss it away on this nonsense. Signing off again. Have fun!

@Richard Wheeler: That would be an example of a fact. When it was obvious Nixon was lying, Republicans went to him and told him he had lost their support and should resign.

Did Democrats do anything throughout Fast and Furious, the VA, Benghazi, IRS targeting, etc, etc, etc, etc scandals besides circle the wagons and batten down the hatches?

BIG difference in ethics. BIG difference.

@Bill- Deplorable Me: How about when Obola told America you can keep your health insurance and/or job period?? When did he know that was a lie?? How about when he told America that obolacare wouldn’t cost taxpayers a cent?? How about when he knew shovel ready jobs was a lie?? How about when he told America Benghazi was caused by a video?? It goes on and on Rich!! Obola lied to America time and time again!! Ethically Obola was a liar and an embarrassment to our country!! This is why America rejected liberals every election except one after he became President. You can NOT deny that sense his first election and the passage of obolacare demoncraps lost the House-Senate-hundreds state representative and senate seats as well as govenorships. This is a clear validation of failure!!

The Conservative Wall Street Journal editorial today

“Trump is clinging to his wiretap claim like a drunk to an empty gin bottle.”–continues “it’s damaging his credibility here and abroad.”
This seems pretty obvious

Bill When it becomes “obvious” to your “ethical” Repubs that Trump is lying, will they tell him he’s lost support and should resign?

@Rich Wheeler: Looks like someone was monitoring Trump people! With all of the leaks showing up in the media, there had t be some sort of surveillance

Looks like their are still too many Obama creatures in the swamp!

Trump tweeted “How low has President Obama gone to tapp(sic) my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy.”
This statement remains a lie.

@Richard Wheeler: No, it doesn’t. It is becoming more evident it is solidly based on fact. ALL of it (especially the “sick” part).

Yet, NO Russian connection or collusion. Now, remind me again who the liars are?

@Richard Wheeler: Actually, Rich, you are wrong again! That is what happens when you just post “feelings” instead of facts. As Vet has posted, there was too much personal information out in the news that could not be known without surveillance. Now it is likely that Obama White House cronies released the information. Unmasking conversations of US citizens and releasing them to the media is a crime. Now, the Trump Justice Department can prosecute those involved or have them provide state’s evidence to avoid prison time. We will soon see how loyal the Obama crowd really is.

@Randy: I would be shocked if anyone gets prosecuted. No matter how much evidence you place in front of someone who hates that DT is Prez, they will still get their opinion from CNN or MSNBC, ie Hillary did nothing illegal.
I would like have the warrant examined, if there was one. As it is classified I dont want it public, just examined by someone that has clearance and knowledge of laws.
We are at war, this leaking of classified info has to stop or it will be ANOTHER 8 years of warfare. Publication or airing of classified information needs to be punished.
Trump tossed Fox under the bus for the Brittish intelligence story, if he is willing to do that what will he be willing to do to the really fake news?
