Section 8 Housing [Reader Post]

In case you did not know what section 8 housing is, the government pays a portion of a family’s rent (as much as 100% of it).  Almost all of these families are single Black females with 3 or more children (based upon applicants which I have seen in person—I can recall 1 white applicant and 1 Hispanic applicant over the past 10 or more years).  I have had periods of time when my only applicants were section 8 people.

Once these women get section 8 housing, they seek to hold onto it for as long as they can (20 or more years, if possible).  That means, no marriage, no taking a better job, no working 2 jobs, etc.  If you are careful enough, and keep your income low enough, then you can get the government to pay for 100% of your housing and food.  There is some possible corruption, because I have had section 8 people spoken to by the counselors to try to get them to take housing other than mine (although I have a perfect record with section 8 as a landlord).  From what I can figure out, there are builders building new houses specifically for section 8, that they will hold and lease out only to section 8 people (I suspect that there is some paying under the table, but that is only an unconfirmed suspicion of mine).  I have had some section 8 women turn up their noses at properties of mine because they were too old (“That house is 20 years old; no thank you”).

I have one very nice house which is huge (3600 sq ft) and half of the people who have called me on this house are section 8.  I am unaware of how many people are on section 8.  I know that for my rentals, about half of the people who call me (maybe a little less) are section 8 applicants.

Now, just because a person is section 8, it does not mean they are a bad person, trashy, or whatever.  If the government said, “This is money for you to get a nice house” you might be willing to take it too.  How many here have taken an FHA loan?  That is a government program.

I have had section 8 people who have trashed my house; and I have had section 8 people who have kept the house nice.  I have had section 8 people who have lied to me and the government; and others who have been above-board about everything.

Obviously, this is Democrats buying votes, and the cost is huge (figure $800-$1200/month for 1000’s of families in every major city in the United States).   If you wonder why your property taxes are high, this is one of the reasons.

I have no idea how many people are on section 8; I don’t know if the government releases those stats.  I think that we would all be shocked.

One more thing; here is how a recent program worked.  A woman paid me about $200/month and section 8 paid me about $900/month.  Section 8 set aside matching funds for what she paid, and applied that to the purchase of a home on her behalf (yes, her income and credit would not have qualified her to buy a home).  Of course, she was able to get the house for virtually nothing out of her pocket.

You may think I am a terrible person for taking on section 8 tenants, but financially, I have to make a judgment; do I take a section 8 tenant today, or do I wait a couple of months (in one case, a year) without a tenant?  When I began buying houses, there was no such thing as section 8 (insofar as I know).

In our depressed sales and even rental situation in Long Beach a lot of owners are willing to rent out places where they can’t sell.
All seem to prefer the Section 8 renter over the person who works for a living.
Why is that?
I asked a couple of them.
A guaranteed rent check is the bottom line.
But these Section 8’ers are getting choosy!
One lady is renting in our condo complex.
She and I went to a store together last month.
As we went by a nasty and noisy property she said, “I looked at that place’s 1 bedroom.
But there are drugs and loud music there all day and all night…why would I want to rent there?”
And, sure enough, the 1 bedroom, Section 8 preferred sign is still up in front of that place.

All I want to know if it’s possible to sue section 8 housing dept? I think this will be the only way out of my nightmare. I have lived next to a woman who has been on the system for 10 years!!! Has more cars than the norm here, plasma tv’s, disturbs the neighborhood, and has a lived in employed boyfriend for over two years. I have informed my city housing dept and ignored it. You can’t tell her anything because she will try to physically fight anyone. It’s driving me crazy, causing me and my family stress.. Can someone give me some type of great advice?? My family moving is out of the question so no smart remarks to that idea…

Please help…

TO: SUSIE get ya ass out and leave from by her if this bothers you so much you leave other wise your just being a bitch….deal with it tell the truth you really want what she has so i suggest you stop trying to have a innocent person kicked off just because you want your way to me it seems as if your either racist or plain out mean, or just wish you were her MOVE AWAY FROM HER if she just hurts so bad rember there are kids involved no matter what there colors, no matter how nmany daddys they have they want to live a normal life just like you so if you dont stop just know GOD is watching you and he dont like ugly people so keep on and you may not ever have to complain again you may never get the chance because you reap what you sew.

To the person called power … You have a problem and seems that your response is personal. Perhaps you’re on section 8 too and your behavior to Susie’s problem is mutual. I smell a commonality but I’m a believer…so if God knows of those who do wrong and take advantage of a benefit, God knows who is doing wrong.

By the way Power.. Where did anyone imply this was an issue with race, kids and the number of daddy’s she has? You sound paranoid and suspect. Hey Susie? If you need advice with your issue in how to move forward., I can definitely help.

Power you say? You ARE the bitch! Where are you located so I can express what I’m thinking.. Thanks to others that my mayor is actually assisting and steps are taken place. Slowly but surely and evidence has been proven. God is good and he will always stand by you. “just shall live by faith”. I don’t care to be like anyone but myself because I appreciate and respect what has been given to me. I stand my ground and will defend my household that I actually pay for. Lastly, if you’re going to attempt to make a point,,, pick up a dictionary or ask someone to proof read your work.

Thank you Adam.. Things are looking good and slips are bound to happen if you know what I mean.

Lol

Power’s missive was for the most part…. incomprehensible…. probably another individual that was standing in the wrong line when they were handing out educations.

To Susie…. stand your ground!

Donald bly, hi SR, hope all is well for you, did you ever catch the BOOMERANG I send,
because if not , Itmust be the DINGO I saw around your place the other day,
bye

@Gary Kukis: Did you ever stop to think that these women are “single mothers” to begin with; the reason they are in the predicament to have the need for section 8. I love how this infuriates you. Do you really think the government is going to give YOU back the money from section 8 funding; it will just go towards something else that you would be upset about. If you don’t like section 8 don’t rent to them.

Did you ever stop to think that these women are “single mothers” to begin with; the reason they are in the predicament to have the need for section 8. I love how this infuriates you. I realize that these women are single mothers for a variety of reasons. Why is that my responsibility? Why am I responsible to pay for them? If they make mistakes, why does the government reward them for their mistakes?

Furthermore, the results of this are: skyrocketing taxes (my property taxes have almost tripled in about a decade); single mothers do a worse job of raising children (stats say that their children are more likely to be criminals, to flunk out of high school, to become criminals, to take drugs, to get pregnant early); and such women are encouraged not to marry, which decreases the likelihood that they will get married. They will depend upon Uncle Sam rather than upon a solid, marital union.

If I was not taxed for this, I would be delighted to never take section 8 tenants (I take very, very few right now).

I am all for taking care of those in our society who are helpless; who really and truly do not have the ability to take care of themselves. My problem is, taking care of people who could take care of themselves, but they choose not to. They have no reason to try to make good decisions because Uncle Sugar is going to take care of them no matter what.

I’m a 40 year old black single man and I got my Housing Voucher in 1 month for a 2 bed room 2 and a half bathroom, and I been on Section 8 for six months now. I lost my home of 8 years and my 2 businesses. But once I get things going again I will get off of it. I kinda still feel bad because its just me and you have tons of mothers with kids that’s on waiting lists for 3 to 5 plus years or more. Should I feel bad because I’m Single ? I why do I feel this way? Some of you are wondering “how did he get a housing choice voucher in one month? I work in Alaska 2 months out the year during the fishing season, and 30 days you are a resident. There is basically no waiting list on these small Alaskan Islands. God is good . But I still feel bad. Now my younger brother got his in 2 weeks. Should I hold my head up high because I was homeless and got my voucher in a month? Or just basically be grateful and accept it. Although I’m very grateful (don’t get me wrong) But you guys know what I mean. Its just I feel that I really don’t need it over a single parent with kids.. sigh.
