Do Felons Deserve a Second Chance, Obama Thinks So [Reader Post]

Should convicted felons be given a second chance? Barack Obama thinks so, and he thinks the tax payers should have to foot the bill. He made his view on this issue more than evident during a town hall meeting in Elyria, Ohio on January 22nd. Here is a excerpt from this Ohio town hall meeting, where a 29 year old felon who has never had a job in his life asks Obama if he will help felons get a job.

Jerome the felon asks Obama:

“I’m 29 years old, and I’ve never had a job in my life. I went to jail when I was younger. It’s like hard to get a job as a felon. Is this — any programs that hire people with felonies like something that — because it’s sad, it’s like — 29 years old, I’m 29.”

Obama Answers Jerome:

“Look, I’m proud of the fact that you’re bringing this up because there are people who’ve made mistakes, particularly when they’re young, and it is in all of our interests to help them redeem themselves and then get on a straight path. Now, I don’t blame employers obviously for being nervous about hiring somebody who has a record. It’s natural if they’ve got a lot of applicants for every single job that that’s a question that they’d have in their minds. On the other hand, I think one of the great things about America is we give people second chances.

And so what we’ve tried to do — and I want to say, this has been a bipartisan effort — when I was in the Senate, working with Sam Brownback; my Vice President, Joe Biden — passing a Second Chance Act that helps to fund programs that help the reintegration of ex-felons.

It’s smart for us to do. You know, sometimes people say, well, that’s just coddling people. No; you reduce the recidivism rate, they pay taxes, it ends up being smart for taxpayers to do.”

Shame on Jerome, if he really wanted a job he could get one. He is playing the victim card. In reality he is only a victim of his own bad decisions. Taxpayers already pay for convicts to be in prison, now Obama wants us to pay to get them a job? Don’t get me wrong, I believe everyone(well, almost everyone) deserves a second chance, but it is not the responsibility of everyone else to provide that second chance.

Now before you start sending me nasty emails saying “you are stupid, and you just don’t understand how hard it is for felons to get a job.” Please allow me to stray from the beaten path for a moment and tell you a bit about my own experience.

I am a convicted felon. Five felonies to be exact. I spent the later part of my teenage years (15-19 years old) as a drug addict. Between ages 18 – 19, I lived out of the back of an Oldsmobile, and skipped around from job to job (i kept getting fired for some odd reason, hmm) to raise money for my heroin habit. I continued this pattern of living until I was finally arrested, charged with 9 felonies, convicted of 5 felonies, and sentenced to 1 year and 2 months in prison. One day, as I was sitting in my cell, I thought to myself, “this isn’t the life I want. I want something better, and I’m going to get.” So I made a plan for what I was going to do when I got out, and I decided to use my time in there wisely by educating myself. I started studying college algebra, then moved on to calculus and finally computer science. I also applied for college while I was in prison, so I could attend as soon as I got out. My release day came, and guess what, I went out and got a job flipping burgers the next day.

I worked the early shift at my new job . Public buses didn’t run that early in the morning(in VA, if you receive a felony conviction you lose your license), so I walked to work, 5 miles, every morning. When my shift was over, I hoped on a bus, and went to the local community college to take a couple of classes. When I got out of class the buses weren’t running so I walked home, 4 miles, every night. This process repeated everyday for 9 months until I finally saved up enough money to pay off all of my court costs, and go through all of the red tape required to get my license back. When I finally got my license and my car back, I went out searching for a new, better job. I found 2 jobs. Who would have thought that a convict could get 2 jobs (Jerome couldn’t seem to find 1 in 29 years). I met a wonderful girl at one of these jobs, and we eventually got hitched! Fast forward 4 years and I am happily married, the proud owner of a brand new home, 6.5 years sober, have a good job, and I am almost done with a bachelors degree in computer science (I pay my own way through school, so I only take as many classes as I can afford).

I told you this story to tell you this. I know it is hard to get a job if you are a felon. I do understand. However, if you are a felon, you are not a victim of society, you are a victim of your actions. It is not the responsibility of tax payers to provide you with a second, it is your responsibility. In the United States there are infinite possibilities for a second chance, but you have to go out and get it. It will not come to you. Don’t let your criminal record hold you back, use it as a lesson in life. If you work hard, pursue your dreams, and strive to be a good citizen, good things will happen. That is the beauty of liberty and freedom, you have every opportunity to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get on the right track in life. How could you not love a country that has allowed a drug addicted, homeless convict to become a sober, homeowner, with a beautiful wife, and lives the American dream everyday. God Bless America!

The guy that stated he walked miles to and from…..if you are a convicted felon of a violent crime it’s very hard to obtain a good job since 9/11 due to the fact that employers were allowed to go back seven years for s back ground check and now there is no limit…..my husband committed aggravated assault in 1987 when he was 17 and came home in 1990 and started working for an electrical union making good money and then came 9/11 and he can’t get a good paying job….and that was his only time ever getting in trouble which he is now 42…..

In 1959 I Pled Guilt To One Count And i have To register Every Year For something i did I Am Not Proud Of What I did But I Have Come A long Way From My Dark Days And i Have Bad Credit For The Last * years I have Not worked for that long i go out there put apps in and nothing i do this 24 / 7 Now what is Not righ Is them tell me oh i can’t hire you and you no what that does to me you have no clue at all you think you had it bad
Jerome the felon asks Obama so you think you had it hard right Jerome

We have to write our representatives of our district and our senators. They change the laws. Look up “contact my representative” and find the person who represents your district, county, state. Email them. I emailed Rep. Southerland from my district about amending the laws that make it hard for felons to further their education and get housing and jobs. If the emails are flooded or if petitions are sent, they will pay attention. “United We Stand”, LARGE numbers get noticed. It is election year, people stand up. Please.

I myself am a ex-felon. I was addicted to heroin and did some very bad things to support my habit. I was charged with 9 Felony 5’s and was convicted on 4 of them. I was sentenced to 2 years in prison. While I was in prison I finished a CBT treatment program to help me fix my reckless thinking behaviors and to change them into positive thinking behaviors. I also completed a 1-year plumbing program, which was the only program the institution I was in offered. Now, I can’t even be licensed in the State of Ohio to have a plumbing business. What good is getting training in the building trades if you can’t use it. Ohio needs to change this law so this training is able to be used. I finished my 2-year sentence and have enrolled in a college coop program, but I am also trying to find employment to help me pay my bills. No job yet because of my record. I’m not asking for a handout from taxpayers like welfare recipients do. I’m asking that laws be changed to help people who are doing things to better their lives. Not having these laws to give people a second chance only leads them back to what they know to survive. Without these laws in place the recidivism rate will never go down and more money will continue to be spent on prisons and housing inmates. So what is better. Change laws and give money to help train ex-felons so they don’t have to go back to their old bad habits. Then, they get jobs and put tax money back in or just continue to throw money away by keeping prisons full to capacity. That’s a no brainer to me. Help the people who want to change their lives, so they can contribute in a positive manner.

im sorry but i dont agree that he was playin the victim card i got my felony charge a year and a half ago since then ive went to schol to be a liscened electrician and yet 4 months later i cant even get a job at taco bell my felony was a possesion of a weapon in a weapon free zone i had ought my little brother a sword for his birthday and was on my way to the post office to mail it to him a cop stopped me while i was walkin and opened up the sealed and ADDRESSED mailing tube that contained the sword (a felony in own right) and arrested me on the spot in order to fight the charge it would have taken 6 months to go to trial which would have put it at christmas and the trial would have been delayed 6 more months im a single father who has raised his now 5 year old son since birth alone i couldnt see losing my son and spending a year in jail over a false charge so i pleaded no contest but every application i put in im required to state that im a felon and thats not something employers want to see. if obama wants to really help us maybe they should give companies that hire felons a tax break or something in order to encourage employers to be more willing to give us that second chance that some of us need so that we can carry our own weight a little more in society and become more than just the “FELON” title that so many ppl seem to not be able to see past

hi,
what come to my mind is that, we should ask before doing something that for sure bring a doubt in our mind
if we think it’s not legit, it might very well be,
but you think then why other do and only me get the rapt?
well that’s the way life goes, it is incredible, but it is the reality,
in a flock there are some who get away from the butcher’s hands,
it is costing you so much in resources and pain and broken future, it should have needed a phone call to one you trust for an advice,
hope you find a job with what is coming which will change the leader and many jobs will surface with the NEW LEADERSHIP WHICH WILL GIVE A THOUGHTFULL LOOK AT YOU AND THE LIGHT CRIME FELONS
JUST GET PASS THE NOVEMBER 6TH VOTES, AND TRY AGAIN, HE WILL PROVIDE JOBS,
YOU’LL HAVE TO GO AND GET IT AMONG THE 23 MILLIONS UNEMPLOYED, BUT THAT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO BE PATIENT FOR YOU AFTER WHAT YOUR SPIRIT SURVIVED.
BEST TO YOU.

I think that after a man or women has done their time in prison that the label of felon should not come into pla;y, the person has already paid his or her dues to scoiety and shouldn’t have to pay for the rest of their lives, if they are to have a second chance than lets give it to them, not keep holding them back because of there past, they should be able to leave it in the past and be able to move forward. Mother of two ex felons

Joe
YES FOR SURE, WHY NOT, ON LIGHT FELONY,
THEY PUT ALL OF THEM ON THE SAME LEVEL THAT’S WHY IT’S NOT FAIR,
AND IT’S ABOUT TIME TO EVOLVE FOR LEADERS WHO CALL THEMSELVES SMART AND FOLLOWING THE EVER CHANGING TIMES AND CRIMES LEVELS,
WHY WOULD YOU PUT A PRISONER WHICH IS A PERVERT IN THE SAME PLACE AS A MISDEAMEANER OFFENCE FROM A YOUNG 17TEEN, WHO STOLE A BICYCLE,
YES TWO WRONG DOESN’T MAKE ONE RIGHT, BUT THE TWO ARE ON AN OPPOSIT LINE.
ONE IS SAVEBLE AND THE OTHER NEED AN BRAIN NEUTERSCOPY TO ELIMINATE HIS SEXUAL URGES TO PRAY ON THE YOUNG CHILDREN AND POTENTIELY TO KILL THEM,
HOPE THE NEXT PRESIDENT WILL FOCUS ON THAT IMMINENT NEED, YOU CAN ALL KEEP HIM BUSY TO READ YOUR LETTERS MORE THAN ONCE ON AND ON. WHEN HE GET ELECTED.
HE HAS THE ABILITY TO MAKE A REPAIR ON THE FAILE SYSTEM.

I went in front of the judge and he stated I have no criminal record. I loved hearing those words. For years my kids took the cut while i struggled to make it. Nothing like a stable work history and a clean background check I finally figured out what those all capital letters JUSTICE FOR ALL actually mean!

@Michelle:

So you have a VIOLENT felony… and you get on at the UNION?!?!? The union requires you past tests, and apply. they also run background checks!!! AND YOU WHITE PEOPLE GET ACCEPTED IN A DAMN UNION?!?!?

there are good blacks who could be of great help to save and unite the blacks more with the whites and answer your demands, the thing also is not the color you must depend on help for BLACK WHO ARE NOT FAIRLY GIVEN THE RIGHT T ANSWER THEY AND YOU DESERVE, MANY WHITES ARE NOT CONSIDERING BY COLOR BUT BY THE FACTS THAT YOU ALL ARE AMERICANS EQUAL TO GET THE CHANCE TO MAKE A SUCCESS, IT IS TO CHANGE THE ONES WHO DON’T GIVE A DAM ONCE ELECTED, GET THEM DEMOCRATS COMMUNIST AND UNIONS WHO PLAY THAT UNFAIR GAME ON YOU, IN THE OPEN PUBLIC SPACE, LIKE YOU DID, IT MUST BE TOLD UNTIL THEY ARE OUT OF THE GOVERNMENT, AND REPLACE BY CONSERVATIVES WHO WANT TO HELP FIX THOSE UNFAIRNESS IMPOSE UPON THE BLACK PEOPLE, AND DON’T DEPEND ON OBAMA EITHER, HE IS ONLY FOR HIMSELF NOT YOU. NOTING TO DO WITH COLOR, BUT ALL TO DO WITH JUSTICE FOR ALL AMERICANS,
NOVEMBER IS COMING NOW, YOU AND ALL HAVE THE POWER TO CLEAN UP THE DEMOCRATES
AND PUT THE CONSERVATIVES IN THE TOP JOB, THEY WILL WORK TO CORRECT THE WRONGS DONE TO ALL WHO ARE MISTREATED. WRITE TO TELL ALLEN WEST HE IS A HERO AND BLACK, WRITE HERMAN CAIN HE WAS AMONG THE CANDIDATES UNTIL THE DEMOCRATS MADE HIM LOOK SO DIRTY UNJUSTLY, THAT HE GAVE UP BECAUSE HIS FAMILY WAS TOUCH BY THE DIRT, BUT HE IS STILL ACTIVE, WORKING HARD TO FIX PROBLEMS, HE DID NOT GAVE UP, HE JUST CHANGE THE WAY TO GET ON THE FACES OF THE OBAMA CREW,
BEST TO YOU. DON’T GIVE UP TELLING AND EXPOSING THOSE WRONGS, WE NEED MANY LIKE YOU HERE

ok. i feel where you guys are coming from. I do! I am a 3time convicted felon. I have gotten my associate’s degree in business management and I have done a lot of other things. I went to washington, d.c. and went a spoke to the eeoc on the federal level the main lady and so on i have made a big change in my life. all states aren’t the same and wisconsin is a bullshit state. our wonderful governor is trying to pass a law that jobs can fire us and not employ us and let us know that it is because we are felons and we cant do anything about it. so we can be discriminated against and not do anything about it. what part of america is that? why would i be proud to be an american when can’t even get treated like one?

I am a Felon, unable to get a job the last 6 years. Society is wrong in denouncing Felons. The concept that a felony is from a criminal act thereby insinuating a criminal mind that is an inherent quality, therefore deeming the individual a criminal unfit for the general population is a fallacy.

Currently, there are 88.8 million Americans with a criminal record and the Felon-Phobia doctrine denies employment to all of them. Most offenses are inconsequential obtained from an imperfect legal system that is kind to the rich and uncaring to the poor.

There is no organization to bring Felons together to become a voting block and force legislation to implement true equal opportunity. In terms of employment, one thing (the felony) has nothing to do with the other (the job), but the Felon-Phobia doctrine is “don’t hire Felons,” a clearly discriminatory act yet supported by government.

Statistics show that a Felon is less likely to become a repeat offender if employed as opposed to becoming habitual without one. In other words, the act of denying employment is the main contributor to the plight.

I am about to lose everything in my life. I will be homeless here shortly. I will lose my dog, my daughter, and my mother who all depend upon my income. We will all be on welfare. My felony had nothing to do with anything against society. In fact, it was a situation which was none of the State’s business. I never went to prison and never paid a fine; and was the result of being poor and unable to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a defense against a flawed system.

The government is too powerful with it’s nose in everything, placing laws on everything whose “police-state” statues is destroying the values our country was made of. If my action were committed in 1950, I would be fine. Yet, with government continued intrusion to correct, they destroy lives. This country has the highest prison rate in the world, almost triple that of china, a communist country.

In the end, when I lose everything and I am on the street I would very much like to commit very serious crime so I can be on T.V. Then, maybe people will wake up and see that the Felon-phobia doctrine society has created, creates that it wishes to prevent. In other words, if I could get a job I wouldn’t have went into a movie theater and killed a bunch of people.

Jeff the Felon
oh that is more than said of the number of felons, are you sure it’s 88.8 million felons
that is unacceptable not in AMERICA THE TOLERANT AMERICA,

AND WHY THE HELL WOULD YOU HAVE TO COMMIT CRIMES TO GET YOUR VOICE ON THE NEWS,
GET THAT OFF YOUR MIND RIGHT NOW, IT’S A DESPERATE THOUGHT,
YOU CAN CALL OR WRITE OR EMAIL HANNITY ON FOX TO GET YOUR VOICE HEARD, AND YOU HAVE TO BE PREPARED TO KNOW AND EXPRESS YOURSELF THE RIGHT WAY OF THE MEDIA,
BUT HANNITY IS THE ONE FOR YOU, JUST DON’T GIVE UP, THE ELECTION IS THE ONE TAKING ALL THE PLACE NOW, BUT HE WILL TELL YOU MORE ON HOW YOU CAN BE HEARD AND WHEN.
I am so sorry for your misfortune WOW, THAT SHOW HOW FAR OUR STUPID ACTIONS AND IGNORANCE CAN LEAD TO DESTROY SO MANY FAMILY MEMBERS,
I can uderstand how you feel, but it no excuse to do crimes,
you are enough in trouble now, no need to aggravate your misery.
be careful, there is a way out, but it has to be find in a positive thinking, oh I know it’s not going to be easy,
you must know that nothing is easy in life,
your mother had you come out with atrocious pain also,
make it worth.

I’m sorry for what you and your family are enduring. America needs to realize what kind of monster they are creating. It’s amazing how the recidivism rate is greatly reduced when felons gain lawful employment. I wish America and politicians would look deep into this statistic and see there is a way to make this country better without wasting money on building prisons. They need to use this taxpayer money in a much more positive way and also implement laws to give felons a second chance. This would be much too easy for them to do or see. There are ways to better America, but if we continue to give government the power to make so many decisions I see the day in America where even law-abiding Americans will have all their rights taken away. Then what? Government has already taken my right to bear arms to hunt and keep my family safe from harm, but they will soon take ALL Americans right to bear arms. Law-abiding citizens will have an option of either giving up their guns or risk imprisonment! It’s time Americans take a stand and take back any rights that our forefathers wanted for us when they wrote the Constitution, which our government is trying to abolish as we speak!

Gary
yes you speak the truth, and if a felon is not a danger to society depending on his or her error, yes they should have the web memory to not disclose the accusation history for public use,
once the person paid his time, that is enough unless he get himself again in trouble.
but once he or she is free they should be given the chance to work same as other AMERICANS,
AND AHEAD OF THE IMMIGRANTS OR WAITING TO BE IMMIGRANTS OR ILLEGALS,
WHY? BECAUSE THEY ARE AMERICANS AND DESERVE TO WORK AND GET THE FIRST CHOICE AS THE OTHER AMERICANS,
IT BRING ME TO NOVEMBER 6TH, IF YOU ARE ALLOWED TO VOTE,
VOTE FOR MITT ROMNEY AND PAUL RYAN, THEY COULD UNDERSTAND YOUR SITUATION MORE
THAN OBAMA, THEY ARE TRUE AMERICANS NOT SOLD AND PROGRAMED BY NEGATIVES FORCES
HATER OF AMERICA, WHICH IS DANGEROUS FOR THIS AMERICA’S FUTURE, THOSE DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT IS AMERICA AND THE CONSTITUTION IS IN THEIR WAY, THEY DON’T WANT IT,
I AM ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE THAT THE FELONS HERE KEPT THEIR HOPE AND LOVE FOR THIS AMERICA EVEN WITH THEIR MISERY, YOU ALL HAVE MY ADMIRATION,
AND KEEP HOPING FOR A BETTER FUTURE WHEN THE JOBS WILL RETURN WITH MITT ROMNEY
AS PRESIDENT, AND AT THIS TIME THERE ARE NO JOBS IN THE MARKET FOR ANYONE.
BEST TO YOU. DON’T GIVE UP,

Felons should run the world 🙂

I couldnt complain about the job I have. Im a Pactiv and Im a Pactiv for life 🙂

Jeff the felon check the no box if your felonies are over 7 years old most states have laws against going more than seven years back on the background check.

When I was 22 years old I was convicted of a felony because my home was burglarized not once but three times by someone I knew and try to help out in the past. I may a bad decision which had a negative impact but at the same time a positive outcome. In life nothing comes easy. Now, if you have a felony it can be harder. I was already a hard working guy. I took the time in jail to map out a better future for myself. Once I was out, I decided to go back to school while working full time. Many doors closed but many were open because I just keep trying and never give up. I have a bachelor in computer science and 8 years of IT experience. Some give up and are on their 8th year in prison or just not doing anything with their lives. I don’t believe in hand outs and never made excuses because of my felony. I grew up in New York City in one of the worst neighborhoods in Queens and I remember being 8 years old taking out the trash and vacuuming a six story big building where my step father worked. Bottom line is this, we must take the past and converted into something positive and never give up. Don’t forget where you came from, respect the past move forward and don’t go backwards! Now, I have my soon to be wife my daughter and three dogs which are like three other daughters which I love more than words can describe and give me a reason to try even harder. Your life is what you make of it, felon or no felon.

Positive force
THANK YOU for coming with a basket full of hopes for those
who think they have reach the last line, at an age where things begin, even with errors,
you found a way to fill time in a constructive manner, while waiting, it served you at the end,
that is a secret you gave and precious one
best to you

@Michelle:
your right as i am a felon with a crime of violence over 24 years ago and no other incidents ever and guess what i have a hard time finding work. I drive a tractor trailor thank god i have alot of experience and very good at my job. If you think people will give you a brake your mistaken even after 20 plus years!!!!many hypocrites and thank you for your statement, and asfor that guy with 5 felony convictions and only serving 1 to 2 years he is full of shit!!!!

Ilove bees,

Thanks, is all about grabbing the opportunities. Those that feel like the battle is lost, haven’t moved on and are slaves in their minds. Don’t get me wrong, there were times that I felt very down because of the judgement that comes along with the felon label. There’s more to an individual if the individual is willing to determine their own destiny and move forward in a positive light.

@ilovebeeswarzone:

Tothose of you out there that think crime wears a face of color your wrong , a crime is a crime no matter who commits the offense! Never should one blame one certain employer because of your color or that a white felon might have better opportunities, my only benefit might be becasue in my given field i have alot of experience but if i was to change even with my degree, lol i would get no place because of my felony!!! I’m 47 and have seen laws change and big brother stick his nose hurting American felons while trying to protect us at the same time, why should i be made to suffer because of that horrible time in American history! i love this country and blame no one why i am a felon, but dont tell me i have better opportunities than most, because thats a flat out lie!thanks for hearing me…. Doc

@Doc: Glad to see this article is still generating debate 3 years after the fact. I’m the guy that is “Full of $H!*”. Keep in mind that these where 5 non-violent, drug related felonies all committed at the same time….not repeat offenses. Luckily for me Virginia Circuit Court records (sentencing included) are publicly available online: http://wasdmz2.courts.state.va.us/CJISWeb/circuit.jsp

I’d love the opportunity to prove you wrong. Feel free to comment back and I’ll send you the links to the specific charges, convictions, and sentences.

@ilovebeeswarzone: I’ve contacted several congressmen about this discussion but never got anything but a generic response back.

@Sean: usually with drug related crimes non violent or not i have seen harsher sentences being handed down, the only time i do not if you gave someone up for a lighter sentece, but hey the world works in mysterious ways!!! As with any crime there is always deals being made even at those whom were yet to be caught…..

Sean
good of you to come, yes you surely never expected that you would have capture so many people
in your SO IMPORTANT POST from the beginning , here we are, and we saw so many despair in AMERICA,
COMING FROM TRUE AMERICANS who see the doors close for many opportunity,
and we also see the courage to not give up and try again, that courage come from the roots of AMERICA, TO OVERCOME SO MANY CHALLENGES, THOSE WHO CAME FIRST HAD TO LIVE BY WORKING HARD OR DIE, AND THE SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST GENERATE A STRONG FUTURE AMERICANS TO CONTINUE THE TASK, SOME HAVE BEEN WOUNDED IN WARS, SO MANY HAVE DIED, FOR AMERICA TO BE FREE,
BUT NOW GOVERNMENTS HAVE NOT TAKEN NOTE OF THE PRICE THEY PAID, AND ARE FAVORING NEW COMERS IN POSITION WHICH BELONG TO AMERICANS,
THEY MUST GO AND LEAVE THE GOVERNMENT TO MAKE ROOM TO A TRUE AMERICAN WHO WILL WORK TO SERVE ALL AMERICAN AND FAVOR THEM OVER FOREIGNERS,

I am a felon. I am 56 come next week. My son was molested by my wifes boyfriend. He admitted this in court of fondling my son. The judge did not do any thing except want to put my son on the stand and I would not allow this: my son was 4 years old at the time. I beat this man very severely and received a 10 to 20 year sentence for this. I served 10 years and now am on parole for 10 years. I need work that is suitable for me. I am doing a young mans work and will soon probably end up with heart failure doing this work. What can a person like myself do for this. I am not crying in my beer so to speak. What I did was no accident just being a father.

Good luck Buddy, sometimes the term felon is misapplied. There are many men who would have done the same thing, but they were never tested in such a situation.

@Buddy:
i feel for you becasue the father/grandfather in me would have made a bad choice like you over this kind of heinous individual!!!! Look i wish i had a answer for you as after i served my time it was hard finding a job and this was 20 plus years ago, dont expect any favors my friend from any perspective employer and just keep your head high!!!!! good luck brother, doc.

Buddy
wow, what kind of judge did you get, for paying so much and so long,
I bet your son can reverse that, he must be old enough to testify now ,
and clear you clean,
he must do it for you. other wise he won’t be able to live with himself,
tell him that
don’t give up, time will help you,

@ilovebeeswarzone:
i dont know if he can , getting a conviction overturned these days is almost an act of god, but i do wish him the best, he was screwed by that judge!!!!

@bridget piggery:
time for you to move from that nazi state!!!! I guess that state thinks once a felon always a crime waiting to happen. good luck to you, doc!

doc
I suppose there are the cost involved that must be out of range,
this story is disturbing for AMERICA JUSTICE,
they must get their act together and review the JUDGEMENTS OF THOSE JUDGES WHO FAILED THEIR OATH, they must be review and once found guilty ,send them to prison for failing the PEOPLE,
THE PRISONS ARE FULL, AND 88’8 MILLIONS FELONS,
IS IN IT A SIGN SHOWING THE GOVERNMENT IS GUILTY AS HELL,

what i have learned over the years is this, many people who have never dealt with cops or a serious strife in life, they have zero clue as to what they would or would not do if confronted by a situation that could compromise their very welbeing. I only owned a firearm because i wanted to be a cop and was watiing to leave for the navy as i wanted to be a seal and serve my country, but the death of my daugther was hard to bear. i did commit a crime, though no one was hurt, a crime ensued and i was sent to prison due to my own bad choice. we as people need to be less concerned with being hyocrites than to judge someone for something they did long ago or did something based on family values.. yess you can commit a crime and be a good man. just food for thought..doc

@ilovebeeswarzone:
beleive me Bee i dont disagree wiht you by any means, just becasue some commit crimes does not mean all felons are usless or bad to the bone and society must realize this immediately!!! though many criminals do reoffend and thats on them but many do not. i feel that this government will stalemate this issue becasue they do not care nor want to deal with a exfelon. this government needs to realize a felon after release is till a member of society.. thanks bee

doc
yes but if the COMPANIES keep a close door policy on the FELONS AND DECIDE THEY ARE ALL IN THE SAME CRIME,
that is unaccepteble, they must be told to look at each person individually, before they reject the person,
that is a policy which must be stress clear to their employer who have the task to see the one
seeking the position, they must not reject a file with a minor inoffensive error or felony
and bring the file to the top guy to review instead of rejecting it,
many companies would benefit out of it, I’m sure.

@doc Thanks, for the support. That is all that one really needs right…..

I have moved from that state. They are no states that lets a felon move on because that they are no laws that want a felon no matter what reason you become one. I am 56 next thursday and it does not get any easier.

@Jon Marshall:

i feel your pain but as for me im working on my degree, almost done and i do understand howyou feel but it will and never change for any felon after 9/11 and to think about of 10 people they say 6 have been arrested and or charged with some type of crime. though i do have a conviction for a violent offense, after my release i have not reoffended!!Society is full of hypocrites and many talking out the sides of their necks.. there is one thing i will say i take even less crap from people after leaving prison, not becasue im looking for trouble but i have paid dearly and still pay because of my crime over 23 years ago! people will always have a opinion about those who got introuble. I have a fieind that did and i think still does what you did though people are to afriad of him and his reach if they rat him out!!! To each his own and i dont associate with that kind of drama!! i work, come home and stay away from people as much as i can! people have made me feel like mingling is a no go becasue those whom have ever lived or never seen as much as i have take life and freedoms for granted, i cannot let someone put me in a bad scene. . it is good that people like yourself were ableto move forward. cheers for you man. be well

Why do you think that a non-violent is or should be treated better than a violent offender. I have heard that story ever since I got out. I acted in protection of my son. I am considered very violent. In defense is not by choice. So why should just a non-violent offender should get any better chances. Buddy

I’m with you, Doc. Buddy

Buddy
a non violent probably will get a better choice if there is any,
because from what you describe, to beat up your child molester
pretty bad, resulted in freaking the judge and all of them,
even that the guy deserved it for all those who don’t get caught and end up
killing the child they put their hands on,
I think you should be clear and profile cleaned since a long time to help you take your life back exonerate of all charges
buddy you are not violent, you had a normal human reaction,
stop thinking that you are, they branded you to think so,
get of that mindset, I’m sure that GOD have understood your actions

Your story is not typical. I understand people not wanting violent people around. If you are a known violent felon, I would most likely not hire you. You were protecting your son from being molested, and I completely agree with the use of force in that type of situation, but that is not what 99% of the population is in for. I am shocked that you were convicted as well. We just recently had a father murder a molestor in Texas, and he was not even charged with a crime.

J
TEXAS, ALWAYS TEXAS,
I JUST LOVE THEM, AND LOVE RICK PERRY,
TEXAS ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING AND THE RIGHT WAY,
THAT’S WHY THE GOVERNMENT AGENCIES HAVE A HARD TIME
CONVINCING THEM TO COMPLY WITH WHAT OBAMA WANT
THEM TO DO,
THEY TRY THAT IN SCHOOLS, THEY TRY THAT IN OTHER STATES, BUT
THEIR BULLSHIT WON’T GO IN TEXAS,

@ilovebeeswarzone:
some states are just worthless and convixct those on the wrong crimes to then let someone go free when they deserve prison more than another, it s a shame that he had to go through that. So many in each state these judges dont want their own peers to scrutinize their ability or judgement when they do make a fair decision, especially one as such a man killing a molester.i dont get it either, i had a freind who killed a man for raping his grand daughter he killed that guy and got 13 years in the ACI back home. such a gross carriage in justice…

doc
yes, what is suppose to be fair is not in this case, for sure, and how many are being
in that unfair situation? I ‘m lead to believe they are more than we can imagine,
and when an doubtful judgement is made, there should be a place to reveal the judge partiality,
instead of impartiality, some kind of OMBUSMAN TO PROTECT SOCIETY THOSE LEFT OUT OF THE
PROTECTION AND IT SHOULD BE FREE, FOR THOSE UNABLE TO PAY,
because they are the ones who are being target more.

@ilovebeeswarzone:
when my infant daughter died thats when i got into the situation i had , very hard holding your infant child and the baby is blue? i lost it very hard for me to deal with it and i robbed someone with my firearm and got caught so i did my time, did not complain, but still i am treated like i am hardened criminal for over 25 years society is 2 faced in many extremes and people wonder evne now at 47 why i am so hateful to our justice system. anyway he got screwed bad by that judge, i di wish him well…doc

@ilovebeeswarzone:
Texas just like any other state, if you got money it talks and bullshit walks. welcome to capitalism…

doc
that is the most vulnerable time, when a person loose the reality, he cannot bare to look.
that ‘s when things happen, and it cost a lot of years lost from a life,
sorry for that,
I learn it but from the victim side, when I was rob and threaten with a gun,
it did change my life too,
did your victim was hurt by you in any way?
I can say the victim pay a big price as well, even if they are not hurt, it’s psychological hurt,
