The Biden administration has secretly been slashing the number of illegal immigrants who must post bond to enter the United States in a policy of “releasing everyone,” according to a former top Department of Homeland Security official.
In revealing its policy under a Freedom of Information Act demand, the administration also showed that it is setting the price of bonds lower than during the Trump administration and requiring a near-record low number of immigrants to pay them.
The bottom line is that the administration is letting thousands of migrants into the U.S. without paying bail bonds to ensure they return for an immigration status hearing. And it’s setting the bond price so low that it’s not worth it for bond companies to hunt down those who skip bail.
“Instead of detaining illegal aliens, the Biden administration is releasing everyone,” said Jon Feere, a former U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement chief of staff.
“The Biden administration is dismantling the detention and bonds programs by simply releasing every illegal alien it can into the United States. And they’re not too concerned about ever locating them ever again. Just mass, lawless chaos without any attempt at actual management,” said Feere, the director of investigations with the Center for Immigration Studies.
For his report, Feere reviewed new ICE data retrieved by Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse, which specializes in publicizing federal immigration data.
What he found is that at a time when historic numbers of immigrants are crossing the U.S. southern and northern borders, the number of bonds being issued is near a record low. What’s more, the Biden team is setting bonds at about half, $4,000, what the Trump administration charged.
He said that a bond set at $10,000 or more usually results in immigrants returning for their court hearings to determine if they are granted asylum or some entry into the U.S. or deported.
Cutting the bond to half of that, he added, encourages people to skip out on them.
Feere wrote on the CIS blog, “ICE insiders conclude that this has been the result of the Biden administration directing ICE field offices to release every illegal alien they can as quickly as possible.”
President Joe Biden has been dismantling the border since becoming president. Under fire from Democrats for ignoring the historic crisis of illegal crossings, he has been blaming Republicans for failing to approve border reform laws, but much of what he has done has been through executive orders and making policy changes without telling the public.
Feere told Secrets that Congress should be demanding more transparency from ICE and Homeland Security to determine other changes Biden has secretly put in place.
“Congress should demand results from every unit within ICE and consider metrics that must be met on an annual basis. Taxpayers are funding the agency at a very high amount, and it’s not unreasonable to expect a return on investment. This country cannot succeed if the executive branch is allowed to effectively dissolve huge sections of federal law whenever it wants,” he said.
