Joe Klein: its ironic that union protesters chant “freedom, democracy, union” while preventing a vote

Loading

Uh oh….you know you’ve lost the fight when a liberal like Joe Klein doesn’t back you any more:

Revolutions everywhere–in the middle east, in the middle west. But there is a difference: in the middle east, the protesters are marching for democracy; in the middle west, they’re protesting against it. I mean, Isn’t it, well, a bit ironic that the protesters in Madison, blocking the state senate chamber, are chanting “Freedom, Democracy, Union” while trying to prevent a vote?

~~~
An election was held in Wisconsin last November. The Republicans won. In a democracy, there are consequences to elections and no one, not even the public employees unions, are exempt from that.
Throughout the whole article Klein makes the argument that these Unions have become the opposite of Democracy. And it’s a good argument.
But they have Obama on their side now so who knows what will happen….Chicago politics and all.
Klein makes a great point here:
But we’ve had far too many state legislatures, of both parties, that have been cowed by the political power of the unions and enacted contracts that force state and city governments to be run for the benefit of their employees, rather than for their citizens. This situation is most egregious in far too many school districts across the nation.
What is it that the “bastard” Walker dares to ask for? To have them pay more for their health care and pension plans. To limit collective bargaining to wages only and to end “closed shops” in which every employee is forced to pay in to the union whether they support that union or not. That’s it.
Being a public sector employee myself, and belonging to a union, I find nothing wrong with Walker’s proposals. The only reason the pension plan I belong to right now is solvent is because we paid for it from day one. I have never had my retirement paid for. A large chunk of my paycheck goes to pay for it.
I recall talking to members of other departments and when I found out that they had all of their retirement paid for…I’ll admit, I was jealous. But I also wondered at how the cities they worked for could afford it. I guess the reality was that they couldn’t afford it….and now its coming to bite them in the ass:
No one likes to lose benefits. We all want what was promised years ago. However, it is simply not going to happen. As long as these budget deficits are staring taxpayers in the eye, unions are putting themselves in a difficult situation by thinking they will not have to give something back.
Everyone is going to have to buckle down….and that means EVERYONE. The days of wine and roses are over.
Oh wait….I hear Obama is going to print some more money. That means it’ll all be ok right?
Sigh…..
I’m here in ID visiting our daughter and wherever travel I enjoy reading the local newspaper. Gives me a flavor for local politics and of course slanted reporting. The newly elected ID state school superintendent has proposed budget cuts and cost saving measures. He is also proposing to eliminate tenure after 3 years for new hires. Think about tenure. You are hired for a job you work for a few years and then miraculously you have a job for life. Where else can you get that kind of guarantee? The teachers union is as expected apoplectic. The news papers are filled with teachers letters to the editor condemning the changes. Their mantra is we do it for the children. One of the local stations ran an investigative report to show who contributed to the new superintendent campaign. They found that he received some money from businesses that provide online teaching materials. I guess this was meant to discredit his proposal to provide lap tops to some of the students so that they can take online courses and make up school assignments. No where No where did that investigative report mention how much money the teachers union spent to defeat him. I was here during the campaign and I witnessed the amount of TV and news paper adds that the unions ran.
Democracy? The left only wants that when the Repubs are in power.
If Governor Scott Walker’s primary objective is to restore fiscal responsibility, why has he promised special interests a number of tax cuts and policy changes that will cost Wisconsin nearly $4 billion in revenue losses?
Go down the list and ask yourself who benefits and who ultimately pays.
Hey Gregster…help me understand this.
On Thursday you posted a source which claimed that there was a projected WI budget surplus.
Mata mercilessly crushed that argument into a fine powder.
Today, you post a source which predicts a massive budget deficit.
Why should we lend any credence or credibility to anything you post when you cannot even consistently agree with yourself?
@Aye, #5:
If I agree that Wisconsin has a budget problem, will that render Scott Walker’s campaign promises consistent with his purported goal of restoring fiscal responsibility to the state?
I hereby concede to the fact of Wisconsin’s long-term budget difficulties, just to free your brain up to mull over the question of whether or not a powerful elected offical is a duplicitous weasel. That might be a more important matter that my own credibility.
@Greg:
…just to free your brain up to mull over the question of whether or not a powerful elected offical is a duplicitous weasel.
No need to mull.
Obie is most definitely the “duplicitous weasel” of which you speak.
@Greg: Okay Greg I will waste the time, effort and oxygen by rebutting your silly post about Gov. Walker wrecking the Wisconsin budget.
The list you posted is from One Wisconsin Now. Even the very left leaning Wikipedia pegs them as “progressive.”
One Wisconsin Now (OWN) is an issue advocacy organization based in Wisconsin. They support progressive causes and conduct research related to those causes.
Furthermore, the list that OWN and you, yourself claim is “special interest” is in fact tax reduction.
Big deal. Capital gains tax reductions, income tax reductions for those making more than $225,000.00, eliminating HSA taxes, death taxes, and the biggest laugher of the list – Walker is being accused of making the budget have a short fall of just over a billion dollars because – wait for it – wait….
because he *gasp!!* transferred money from the general fund to the highway fund! So Walker is slashing taxes in the effort to make Wisconsin a more business friendly state, relieving the tax burden from it’s citizens during the Obama Recession and attempting to turn the ship of state away from the abyss of bankruptcy. For that you attack him. Interesting.
Your pathetic attempt to malign Gov. Walker is as limp and useless as usual, Greggie.
As Mr. Irons pointed out, your accusation that Wisconsin had a budget surplus is a lie. You and Rachel Madcow make quite a little pair.
From Politifact:
We re-read the fiscal bureau memo, talked to Lang, consulted reporter Jason Stein of the Journal Sentinel’s Madison Bureau, read various news accounts and examined the issue in detail.
Our conclusion: Maddow and the others are wrong.
So Greggie, what is the lesson to learn from this? Never, EVER post something without vetting it first.
@Greg, still parroting the same ol, same ol? First you said that WI had a surplus, and we took care of that ignorance on the other thread. Now you’re suggesting that the “loss of revenue” projected is more than the entire budget gap – the same to which you still are clueless?
Your math deficiences, as well as vivid, partisan imagination, just boggle the mind….
You’re pathetic in your research, guy. Worse than that, you’re starting to rival drive-by-johnnie-ryan, dumping and running without doing the clean up.
Tell me, do you believe every progressive blog, pushing an agenda, without doing the least bit of further reading? You’re one easy mark. LOL
BTW, you never did address my points on the other thread. Excellent dodge, and a wise decision on your part. But what you may want to consider answering is the easier question I posed to you… like what is wrong with health savings accounts, tax deductions/credits for relocated businesses, and a tax exclusion for new employees, in this economic environment?
Again, I will point out that you were not in the least bit upset about the heinous Obama/Pelosi/Reid stimulus… not that it was focused as effectively as Walker’s. Your hypocritical breeches are showing, dude.
BTW, I see I was not needed here at all since @anticsrocks did the necessary slicing and dicing prior to my arrival. Thanks, anticsrocks. I’d call that a “score”!
Mr. Iron’s Politifact also had some statistics that embarrass Mr. Greg’s willingness to parrot partisan lies.
Meanwhile, what about Maddow’s claim — also repeated across the liberal blogosphere — that Walker’s tax-cut bills approved in January are responsible for the $137 million deficit?
Lang’s fiscal bureau report and news accounts addressed that issue as well.
The tax cuts will cost the state a projected $140 million in tax revenue — but not until the next two-year budget, from July 2011 to June 2013. The cuts are not even in effect yet, so they cannot be part of the current problem.
Now how did you make the leap from a projected $140 mil over two years to over $3 billion again, Greg? Just that “billion” figure alone would cause the 2nd grade math student, possessing the same original facts, to raise their eyebrows.
*palms forehead*
Jeebus Greg, ya can’t be that daft.
I mean, any more daft, and I have to start wondering how you feed yourself.
“”Jeebus Greg, ya can’t be that daft. “”
Wanna bet?? 😉
@MataHarley: Thank ya’ Mata. I learned from the best! You are a very effective sensei when it comes to smacking down the moonbats.
@MataHarley, #10:
“The cuts are not even in effect yet, so they cannot be part of the current problem.”
Ah, then they’ll obviously have no more of a negative long-term effect on Wisconsin’s budgetary problems than any of the several billion dollars worth of other tax cuts that Walker intends.
To me it kind of looks like any savings realized by cutting the pay and benefits to firefighters, police, teachers, and other undeserving public employees will ultimately be transfered into wealthy people’s pockets. Moonbats tend to see things that way. We tend to notice where the money starts out, where the money ultimately winds up, and who gets left holding an empty bag.
Heh, someone’s trying to count their chickens before the eggs hatch…
@Mr. Irons: #15:
Republicans might have set a precedent for that with their assertions that hundreds of billions in tax cuts now won’t increase deficits or accumulated debt in the long run, because federal revenues are certain to rise to or exceed the total amount of the cuts as a result. Hardly any contemporary economists agree, irrespective of their political lean.
@Greg: What’s the matter Greggie? Don’t like what I had to say, so you choose instead to ignore it?
Typical tactic on your part.
But I don’t always ignore comments, instead I like to shed light on them and let the cockroaches scatter. You said:
To me it kind of looks like any savings realized by cutting the pay and benefits to firefighters, police, teachers, and other undeserving public employees will ultimately be transfered into wealthy people’s pockets.
Greg, Greg, Greg. *sigh* Still banging that class warfare drum, eh? Those evil wealthy people! Shame! Why they never do anything with their money (except buy things which stimulates the economy, oh yeah, and start businesses, which stimulates the economy, and I almost forgot, they hire people, which also stimulates the economy)!! So why do THEY deserve to keep their money??!!! According to you, they don’t.
Tell me, Greg; would you have a totally communistic society where EVERYONE is equal? Equal in misery, poverty and disease, that is.
Will you never learn?
Now run along and throw some bombs on other threads, because I know you don’t have the balls to respond to this comment.
@anticsrocks, #17:
Greg, Greg, Greg. *sigh* Still banging that class warfare drum, eh?
Yup. Although I consider it more like something that should be banged on to alert the majority of Americans that someone is engaging in calculated class warfare against them. I think I know a rigged game when I see one.
I would prefer a society where the highest aren’t quite so stratospherically high, the middle class isn’t steadily losing ground, and the lowest aren’t in ever increasing danger of sinking even lower. If “the working poor” constitute a rapidly growing segment of society, the middle class is shrinking, and the richest 5% are rapidly growing richer still, it’s a pretty good indication that something is seriously out of balance. If nearly 1 out of every 7 Americans on food stamps isn’t a warning sign, I don’t know what is. I don’t happen to believe that the correct solution is to call them lazy, cut their benefits, and let ’em find jobs for themselves or go hungry. (Which isn’t a statement specifically about food stamps so much as one intended to make a broader philosophical point. So far as I know, only Newt Gingrich has recently suggested that food stamps should be cut.)
Just more moonbat thinking, I suppose.
Greg, tax cuts ALWAYS increase Economic growth as companies invest the tax savings in job creation and infrastructure improvements. What’s wrong with that? Suppose the Government increased the minimum corporate tax to say, 50%, Heck, why not 80%! sounds great Greg, right? what do you think the economy would look like after 5 years of an 80% minimum corporate tax rate? Hazard a guess Greg? Or will I hear crickets? C’mon Greg! if higher taxes are the answer give us an educated guess What would The U.S. economy look like with an 80% Corporate tax in five years?, And just for the cherry on top.I ask you the inverse, where would the U.S. economy be in 5 years if the corporate tax rate was SUSPENDED and reduced to 0% for five years? Answer these two questions with your true understanding of economics Greg.
Did I awake this morning to a parallel universe? Joe Klein making sense? Where the hell am I, anyway?
If nearly 1 out of every 7 Americans on food stamps isn’t a warning sign,
My grandparents were not able to have a flat screen TV and cable and still be considered poor. That hadn’t become a “right” just yet.
When I first started posting at FA, I really thought that everyone here really wanted to understand issues and consequences. I spent a good deal of time trying to explain issues that I had been involved with to no avail. I came to the conclusion that people like Greg, Rich Wheeler, John Ryan and a few others have no interest in understanding issues. They just want to throw rocks at those who do. I do not give them the time of day any more. I have better things to do like taking out the garbage.
It seems to me that Greg’s comments have devolved into his usual rant against the wealthy. Class warfare indeed!
Gov. Walker and the WI conservatives are merely trying to use an option that prevents either thousands of teachers being laid off, or higher taxes to the WI citizenry as a whole. The unions and democrats have made the argument into one simple mantra, “Screw everyone else, we want our money!”.
Several things worth pointing out that show they, the unions, the dems and unionized, are being disingenuous about:
– Claiming it’s for the children. Really!? So……..causing cancellation of school, which has to be made up later, and disrupting any continuity of lessons, all in order to protest against something that doesn’t affect the children(please show me the links between the children and a teacher’s pay/benefits), is “for the children/”
– Fraudulently obtaining “doctor’s notes”, by claiming sickness, in order to protest. If it’s that important to them, then take the lumps coming to you from the school boards when you get back to work.
– The union bosses having to “bus in” additional protesters.
– The dem WI senators running down to Illinois to prevent a vote on the measure. A clear case of shirking duties. They should all, when they return back to Madison, find out that their offices have been moved into broom closets, as it’s apparent that they do not need the room of regular offices in order to perform the duty they were elected for.
Lastly, when will the MSM, democrats, and all their supporters and apologists realize that their lies will not be brooked any more by the people. Cell phone cameras, the internet, and the fed-up mood of the people have seen to that.
To me it kind of looks like any savings realized by cutting the pay and benefits to firefighters, police, teachers, and other undeserving public employees will ultimately be transfered into wealthy people’s pockets.
WTF does that even MEAN???
Even th0ugh I know you won’t (can’t) …
Please describe that “transference” of said monies. Go ahead, idiot, I dare you to even attempt it.
Oh wait…I forgot…
To the NeoFabians, ALL money is the property of the government, and if someone wants to keep more of what they EARNED, to that Fabian, that is akin to theft.
But even THAT ignorant and anti-American stance has nothing to do with what’s going on in Wisconsin.
-I guess I will revert to my previous nomenclature…
Idiot.
@ Patvann, The transference of monies that Greg favors is the redistribution of wealth from those that earned it to the Government for distribution to those that did NOT earn it. Class Warfare is the only Fight worth winning but He does not realize that when the supply of OPM (Other Peoples Money) runs out…
No More Free Ice Cream!
Or maybe he meant only the wealthy of Wisconsin:
This is salary, not salary plus expense accounts.
Nothing like laying your own job on the line for greedy union bastard bosses.
@Greg: You did it! You ACTUALLY answered a question!!!!!!!!
WOOHOO!!!!!!
I asked:
Tell me, Greg; would you have a totally communistic society where EVERYONE is equal?
You answered:
I would prefer a society where the highest aren’t quite so stratospherically high, the middle class isn’t steadily losing ground, and the lowest aren’t in ever increasing danger of sinking even lower.
You prefer that the wealthy aren’t wealthy and that their property, the fruit of their labors be given to the poor so that everyone may be equal.
So you finally come out and admit it. You ARE a Communist!
You have surpassed moonbat.
You blasted right past far left loon.
You left socialist in the dust and went straight to GO Communist, collected some evil, filthy rich person’s $200.00 property and are hoping to roll doubles so that you can collect even more of someone else’s money.
Grats, Greggie! You are a Communist. Somewhere, Lenin, Marx and Engels are shedding a tear…
@DrJohn, #21: “My grandparents were not able to have a flat screen TV and cable and still be considered poor. That hadn’t become a “right” just yet.”
To the extent that poor families have such non-essentials, they’ve been the customers of other people who are making money by engaging in private sector enterprise. It’s a fair bet that they’ve also been customers of the finance industry. Unwisely, in many cases, but that didn’t keep those who are out to make a profit from extending them a line of credit and encouraging them to use it. Maybe we should consider food stamps an indirect government subsidy to American retailers and finance companies.
Who said anything about redistributing their holdings to make everyone “equal”? Once you’ve earned your money and paid your taxes on it, it’s yours. I believe the rich should be subject to the same tax rates each step up the tax bracket ladder as everyone else, but that the top end tax rates should be higher than they currently are. That’s hardly communism. It is part of what’s necessary, if you really want to balance the budget.
@Patvann, #27:
That’s quite a list. The real question, of course, is this:
Given each job’s educational requirement, the level of managerial skill that is needed, and the overall level of responsibility that is involved, what should the position pay? We can’t conclude that people are overpaid simply because their salaries are above average.
Another thing I would note has to do with the pay ratio of managers compared with those they manage. In the private sector corporate world, when top-level managerial pay is compared to average worker pay, the gap is commonly much greater. You generally won’t find a spread that’s anywhere near that of the private sector in public sector employment.
Greg… on the other hand…. if School Superintendent… the CEO and board of GM, etc, were to all be struck by lightning, tonight….. tomorrow the cars would STILL roll off the line…. the School classes would STILL be taught, etc… by the GRUNTS….. I think the importance, and need, of so much “management” is way over rated and indulged! Sure, someone has to run things, but the PRICE it’s costing is insane…. Since when is the Boss worth 10X (that’s 1000%!) or more a yr, than the guys who actually DO the work!! The gap has WIDENED between worker & management wage wise… and has productivity, etc increased an equal amount?? If not, then what ARE they paid so much for?? What miracle have they done?? Capitalism is good…. but “feudalism” isn’t! They are CEO’s….Administrators, and Superintendents….. NOT KINGS!
Okay, seems Greggie wants it both ways.
Greg, when you rail against the evil rich and bang your class warfare drum for all to hear, you go on and on about how there is too much pay going to those in the “upper class.” However, when a list is posted that shows the out of control bargaining power of the educational union, you reverse course and give lip service to being careful not to judge those people. They have tough jobs, etc… and besides in the private sector the disparity is bigger, so there!
And yeah, you are a Communist because you want the wealth of the top tier earners to be confiscated and given to those in the lower income brackets via entitlement spending.
One last little thing – when I called you a Communist it didn’t even faze you. You seemingly had no problem with it at all. Had I been accused of that, I would have set the accuser straight right away. It is very telling that you have no problem with being labeled a Communist.
Say hi to Van Jones for me.
My annual salary when I worked: 55,000 USD to operate in high hazard work environment for Cessna Aircraft that was stuck to OSHA rules. My taxes were roughly eating about 10,000 out of that per year when I was employed from 2006 to 2009. I was laid off before taxation policies were going to hit Aerospace at a Federal Level to fund the FAA, but projected revenue (aka predictions) from these new Corporate taxation did not come to fruition as the labor forces in Aerospace and adjacent industries that supply Aerospace had collapsed in wealth and work force due to various reasons up to and including Government manipulation of Crediting systems (public and private jets are bought though staggered Credit systems by third party Creditors). This is an example of stupidity as per example in companies like Atari, Midway, and Interplay in the Video Game industry relied on “Projected Revenue collected” in the 90’s to operate their business and when the bills came and fiscal year revenues were far short of projections these three businesses collapsed (Atari and Interplay had to merge and being bought by Hasbro Toys).
To make a claim that future raised tax rates will generate current tax revenue is, “counting chickens before the eggs hatch” Greg. Will always be so. As my first, “Bam!” link showed that the budget cut plans or any forms of Tax hikes in the State of WI do not take effect for this fiscal year but for the next which means your argument falls apart as you’re trying to make problems of the future a problem of now. These problems may manifest or may be removed due to actions of the current Legislature body of WI with the present actions they may take effect, which is what the argument IS about. It is ignorance to try to accurately count how many chickens one will have from unhatched eggs, and you’re trying to count problems along with Rachel Maddow and Ed Shultz that have yet to be a part of the true problem at hand or if at all that they will manifest.
