Paid Maternity Leave Chickenhawks (Guest Post)

God bless those gents over at PJTV. The Trifecta team of Stephen Green, Scott Ott, and Bill Whittle look like they’re ahead of the curve in identifying what the Radical Left has chosen for its wedge issue to scare their voters into believing their “War on Women” hysterics for the 2016 presidential election. Granted, if there were a real “War on Women” the main offenders would be mainly Democrats, but try explaining that to a leftist. With the departure of Jon Stewart from the Daily Show it appears that John Oliver is the candidate to become the new leader in serving up radical left wing snark. Patrick Gillespie at CNN Money reported:

John Oliver went on a Mother’s Day crusade Sunday night.

On “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver highlighted why he thinks the U.S. should have paid leave laws for new parents. Right now, the federal law allows for 12 weeks of unpaid leave.

America is the only developed country in the world that doesn’t offer paid family leave, according to a United Nations report. “This is not how it’s supposed to work,” Oliver argued.

Paid family leave has long been a controversial subject, but it’s drawing new attention as the 2016 elections heat up.

I’m not going to go into the flawed arguments being used to support another policy intended to drive up the cost of hiring and kill even more jobs. Since John Oliver is such a champion for paid maternity leave I thought I’d check to see if John Oliver’s employees get full paid maternity leave. HBO is owned by Time Warner, and when I looked at what benefits they offer on their web site guess what wasn’t included? As always, leftists are extremely generous when reaching into other people’s pockets, but not so much their own. So now we can add “Maternity leave Chickenhawks” to the list of categories for leftist hypocrites.

“You can’t go on and on about how much you love mothers, and then fail to support legislation that makes life easier for them,” Oliver concluded.

No John, you can’t go out and point your sanctimonious finger at everyone else until you get your own house in order. Tell Time Warner that you refuse to record another show until they offer paid maternity leave to every employee – better include paid paternity leave – wouldn’t want to discriminate. Until you’re ready to do that spare us the bleating of another left wing Chickenhawk.

Gee.
Democrats ran the entire federal government for a couple of YEARS when Obama was elected in 2008.
I guess, if it meant all that much to them, they should’a done something about it when they had the chance.

They’re going to do it just after hell freezes over.

I don’t think the charge of hypocrisy holds up here. A corporation (or representative thereof) may argue that some policy X would be in the best interests of workers, including its own individual employees. However, the cost of implementing that policy might put that corporation at a competitive disadvantage with those corporations that choose not to implement it. It would not be hypocritical of that corporation (or representatives thereof) to recommend/support government regulations requiring all corporations to adhere to the policy. Such regulations would allow the corporation to meet the needs of its workers without jeopardizing its commitments toward delivering profitable returns to its shareholders.

@Kevin Kirkpatrick:

However, the cost of implementing that policy might put that corporation at a competitive disadvantage with those corporations that choose not to implement it.

Wait…. how could providing the paid leave be a disadvantage? Obviously, as with most things liberals think everyone should have, isn’t it free? How can it possibly cause an economic disadvantage?

Workplace safety, the 8 hour workday, the minimum wage, child labor laws, all were opposed by conservatives as ” job killing”
Right now American corporations are seeing all time high record profits under that socialist Obama. The Diw Jones tripled under Obama. Brother Bob, 6 years ago did you correctly predict that the Dow would triple under Obama? Well why should anyone. Believe you when you say that paid maternity leave will kill jobs ? How important bro the future of our country are babies ? Should we invest more in them ?
Please try to consider the long term not just the short, this has been one of the many problems facing the USA we have been looking onlyfor the short term profit not the long term health of the economy.
As far as this being a “wedge” issue unless the GOP chooses to attract more of the single largest demographic group they will continue to get an atomic wedgie at the polls from women
Right now the only thing that is keeping the party alive is gerrymandering at the state level and that is going to be changed by the courts

@Kevin Kirkpatrick: That’s known as ‘welfare’ Kevin.

@Brother Bob: Thanks for linking to that one, Bro Bob.
I can’t remember a job where paid maternity leave wasn’t a part of the package for female employees.
But without that gov’t mandate I guess there still were a few places (cough, cough, GOVERNMENT jobs) where women didn’t have such a special paid leave.
Nice point in that video about how our own federal BLS (bureau of labor statistics) points out that a mere 5% of all workers feel they don’t have enough paid leave as of now.
So it really is a created, imaginary problem that Dems are throwing out as if evil Republicans are bad guys for not taking care of it.

@Nanny G: That’s right, it’s those rascally republicans that did it.

@John:

Workplace safety, the 8 hour workday, the minimum wage, child labor laws, all were opposed by conservatives as ” job killing”

Were they, John? Really?

@Bill:

Were they, John? Really?

I would ordinarily say ‘making it up as he goes along’ but in this case it’s ‘attempting to make it up as he goes along’.
