This might be unconnected to the President’s visit here; but this occurred an hour ago, with the President not too far away (and me living in this neighborhood):
Three people were wounded Friday during a shooting in the Santa Monica College area, law enforcement sources told The Times.
The suspect was found in the school’s library and taken into custody. The extent of the injuries were not immediately known, according to the sources.
The college was on lockdown, officials said.
Police sources told The Times the victims were shot inside a car either on the campus or near the campus.
KPCC:
Santa Monica police say a man believed to be the suspect was shot and transported to the hospital, NBC L.A. reports. The college has been put on lockdown, and students not on campus have been advised to stay away.
An eyewitness named Evelyn told KPCC that she witnessed a husky male shooting around noon.. The man was wearing what appeared to be body armor and carrying a long black gun, Evelyn said. He fired at least five shots, according to the witness.
The man told a green car to stop, Evelyn said, then shot out the windows.
President Barack Obama was in Santa Monica Friday speaking at a fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee. It’s unknown if the shooting is related to Obama being in Santa Monica; his speech was being given several blocks north of the campus, according to NBC L.A.
Random act of violence?
A former fetus, the “wordsmith from nantucket” was born in Phoenix, Arizona in 1968. Adopted at birth, wordsmith grew up a military brat. He achieved his B.A. in English from the University of California, Los Angeles (graduating in the top 97% of his class), where he also competed rings for the UCLA mens gymnastics team. The events of 9/11 woke him from his political slumber and malaise. Currently a personal trainer and gymnastics coach.
The wordsmith has never been to Nantucket.
if only more people were allowed to openly carry RPGs and such this the perp might have been taken out right away even if he did have body armor
Is this the same incident?
Santa Monica Shootings: 6 Victims and 1 Suspect Killed, Police Said

If this is the same incident….STILL no name for the perp.
“Elsewhere, the person of interest was taken into custody, but officials would not provide details about that person
Hummmm
@john:
Because California’s strict gun laws were so successful in preventing him from spraying a bus with an AR-15, randomly shooting at people walking down the street, and carrying his weapons onto a college campus, right? How’d that work out for the 4 dead?
@Nan G: Yes, that’s the same story. I think it’s made national news.
Helicopters, police, and media have been here all night.
@Nan G:
@plainjane31: Yes, looks to be of Lebanese descent, but this is not a case of jihadi terrorism.
LATimes:
So, it’s almost 24 hours later.
The shooter and others (possibly his own dad and brother) are dead YET NOT ONE of them has been named!
When will we learn who the killer and/or his victims were?
Eye witnesses describe him as ”white with his hair in corn rows.”
Edited to add:
If correct, his dad was Samir Zawahri.
I had read today’s LATimes and not seen that.
Perhaps it is not included anymore?
Or I’m reading an earlier version from before it was included?
Hard to tell.
They refuse to say when they edit or correct anymore.
@Nan G:
There’s supposed to be a statement at 10am this morning.
It’s confirmed something that my neighbor told me when I ran into him yesterday at the scene of Pearl/20th St: He told me one of the people shot was a homeless woman he often saw and helped give cans to, rummaging in the back alley garbage and recycling bins.
@Wordsmith: Thanks, Wordsmith.
It sure is a sad thing when there is a shooting in your own neighborhood.
We had one about a year before we decided to leave LB, CA.
The guy ran from police and into a home next-door to me.
At one upstairs window he broke out their window and I rushed to my closest window opposite with a gun in my hand.
He was obviously planning to try to leap from his perch on their window sill through my open window…..then he saw me as I raised my gun towards him.
He backed into the room with the broken window as police surrounded that home.
Had I not been armed they would have been surrounding an empty house and I would have been a hostage!
Took another 12 hours before police got him out by firing tear gas from my place into that place.
(I was safe at a neighbors’ while police had their best eyes on him from my place.)
It was not the reason we moved, but it didn’t weigh in any balance toward staying.
There are more guns in Utah per household than nearly anywhere else.
One in 5 people here carry legally.
There is some crime, but mostly we feel a lot safer.
The NY Daily News is making the claim of mental illness.
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/santa-monica-shooting-victim-identified-article-1.1366943
The guy was 24 today (had he lived) and yet SO upset that his parents divorced that he put on body armor, grabbed 1,300 rounds of ammunition and first murdered his own dad, one brother, set the family home ablaze then carjacked a woman.
Next he went around in her car (forcing her to drive) as he shot other people in their cars.
Then he went to a college (no gun zone campus) where he continued shooting people until he was shot.
4 are already dead.
A daughter of one victim is in such grave condition she, too, will die.
Was this really a mental illness (as defined by the BOOK that lets homosexuals off)?
Or was this an honor killing plus a short, well-prepared for jihad where the more Western you looked, the more likely you were a target?
And, is committing an honor killing and/or jihad against the infidel now listed officially as a mental disorder?
If he thought his murders were to cleanse his family honor and kill the infidel he might have also believed he would be in Paradise after dying for doing these deeds.
CNN adds this:
The gunman had suffered mental health issues. A couple of years ago, he was hospitalized for treatment after allegedly talking about harming someone, according to the official.
It’s not clear whether the state government or his family committed him for treatment or whether he committed himself. It’s also unclear under what circumstances he was released.

@Nan G:
I heard on the news that the shooter’s mother was “vacationing” in the Middle East.
But wait, wasn’t this in California, one of the states that have such rigid gun laws that this could not have possibly happened? Didn’t California pass all those gun laws to prevent exactly this kind of massacre?
Well now, that gives Janet Napolitano a couple of choices, doesn’t it? She can call this a case of road rage or a case of campus violence. Or maybe a case of road rage that progressed into campus violence. But we will all be assured that the killings of infidels had nothing to do with this shooters ethnicity.
Being of Lebanese descent, and having moved here, his family could just as well be Christian for all we know at this point (and would religious Muslims name their sons “John” and “Chris”?).
Marcela Franco has expired, bringing John Zawahri murders up to 5. Also:
Apparently shot her in the head.
When I first went outside to check out what was going on at Pearl and 2oth, my neighbor saw me and approached me. He knew right then that this woman who was killed was a homeless woman who often collects cans and bottles from the garbage and recycling bins out in our back alley.
More on Zawahri
Okay, it’s tantalizing agenda-driven speculations like this that puts egg on the face of the right-wing blogosphere. Linked at the bottom:
I believe the police still haven’t officially released the name; and that’s because the family member not deceased in all of this, the mother, is on an overseas trip for one more week.
Within the hour, turning on the news, I was made aware by the news station that the family involved in this was most likely of Lebanese descent (field reporters interviewing neighbors where the house was burning).
@Wordsmith:
Apparently the name is known because the mother is now back in country:
Beverly Meadows was a neighbor of the family.
She told local news KABC that John had recently shaved his head and grown a beard.
Right now no one is coming forward as a fellow member of any religious organization he went to (or his family.)
Many Lebanese are Christians.
So, it wouldn’t be unheard of (if he’s Lebanese) that his family was Christian, too.
Outside of Twitter, most news and news blogs are holding off on naming his religion.
Debbie Schlussel:
She doesn’t cite where she’s gotten her info on his family’s religion.
And then she launches into this tirade since it can’t be pinned down that he is a Muslim extremist rather than just a mentally disturbed mass murderer:
I wouldn’t go so far as to claim this is another example of cultural and values clash (not enough is known about the family background and history); but in the past, I have mentioned about how certain practices blamed on Islam can actually be blamed on cultural traditions that predate the religion.
The father Samir sounds like he was not a great husband.
I believe John and Chris were born in Los Angeles.
This guy should not have been legally able to buy a gun, much less many guns.
Ammo in CA requires ID now.
How did he get all that?
He had a mental illness.
It should be noted that liberal-rub CA hardly ever goes after illegal gun owners.
It seems to never check the lying forms they fill out to obtain guns.
In point of fact, nationwide, in 2010, over 48,000 felons and fugitives tried to illegally purchase guns, the Obama Justice Department prosecuted just 44 of them.
44 out of 48,000.
Since Obama was elected (the 1st time) over 72 million Americans have applied for a gun permit.
2009: 67,324 denials total.
2010: 72,659 denials total.
Extrapolate that for all his years and….that is fewer than 5%.
And why?
Because bringing a criminal case for lying on a government form is a relatively low priority for prosecutors.
The Bible says that, if you are lenient to a wayward child you are empowering his to do bad more often.
Obama is lax toward criminals who ought not have guns.
No wonder that criminals root for Obama about his gun grab from law-abiders.
More victims for them!
