Liberals: “Will love dictators for cash” [Reader Post]

Funny thing.

If you search for Democrats’ position on Moammar Muammar Qaddafi Khaddafi Gadaffi Gadhafi Kadaffy Gaddafi, after a bit you’ll find that they have none.

Reid, Pelosi, Hoyer, Durbin- nothing. Democrats are all oddly silent, except for the loony Cynthia McKinney who gave a speech in support of Gaddafi back in 2009:

Colonel Khadafy should be highly commended for honoring our ancestors – the framers of true democracy – by reaching out from Africa to the entire world. We would like to thank him for this opportunity to discuss his thoughts as presented in the Green Book.

We already know that Barack Obama’s spiritual mentors Jeremiah Wright and Lewis Farrakhan have been big fans of Gaddafi for a long time. There appears to be an identifiable method of procuring the support of liberals and democrats.

Buy them.

Right under our noses Arabic countries have been buying up universities, academics and left wing liberal performers.

Since 1995, Arabian Gulf money has poured into these schools:

American University (The) $500,000
Boston University $1,500,237
Columbia University $500,000
Cornell University $10,900,000
George Washington University $11,953,519
Georgetown University $16,232,667
Harvard University $11,871,563
Howard University $250,000
MIT $10,000,000
Michigan State University $926,740
Rice University $2,750,000
Texas A&M University $1,498,671
Tufts University $1,000,000
University of Arkansas $18,312,524

Total $88,195,921

It is suggested that the goal of this money is

“reducing criticism of those regimes and increasing criticism of the US and Israel…”

Arab money also floods English schools:

Between 1995 and 2008, eight universities – Oxford, Cambridge, Durham, University College London, the LSE, Exeter, Dundee and City – accepted more than £233.5 million from Muslim rulers and those closely connected to them.

And the donations are bearing fruit:

A study of five years of politics lectures at the Middle Eastern Centre at St Antony’s College, Oxford, found that 70 per cent were “implacably hostile” to the West and Israel. A friend of mine, a former Oxford academic, felt that his time was largely spent battling a cadre of academics overwhelmingly hostile to the West, in an ambience in which students – from both Britain and abroad – were presented a world-view that was almost exclusively anti-Western.

How many parents dream of sending their kids to Harvard? And what would they be taught there? The Monitor Group of Boston is composed of a group of Harvard professors. For $250,000 a month between 2006 and 2008 they wrote a proposal for a book

extolling the importance of Moammar Khadafy, his theories on democracy, and his “core ideas on individual freedom.’’

One subcontractor said that he was working for “change”, most likely as in, “Hey buddy, can you change a ten thousand?”

In the Globe and Mail, Margaret Wente remarks:

At least Nelly and Mariah, along with Beyoncé, Lionel Richie, Jay-Z and Usher – who’ve also performed for the Gadhafi clan – held out for decent sums of money. I suspect the intellectuals came far more cheap. Nor have they (so far) admitted remorse for their shameless behaviour as the Loon of Libya’s useful dupes.

Gaddafi’s record is hardly a mystery:

Qaddafi’s record of brutality and terrorism during his 40-year reign is well-documented – his regime was linked to a 1986 Berlin disco bombing, causing the deaths of two American soldiers, and the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland, which killed 270. Late last month, Libya’s former justice minister told a Swedish newspaper that Qaddafi himself ordered the Pan Am bombing. Muatassim’s brother Seif al-Islam el-Qaddafi recently warned Libyan protesters on state television to abandon the streets or face “rivers of blood.”

Yet liberal performers including Beyonce, Usher, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent and Nellie Furtado were undeterred by it:

Carey accepted $1 million to perform for Qaddafi’s son, Muatassim, Libya’s national-security adviser, at a lavish New Year’s Eve party on the Caribbean island of St. Barts in 2008; Beyoncé and Usher performed for an undisclosed sum on the island the following year. 50 Cent gave a performance before Muatassim at a 2005 film festival in Venice. Managers for Usher, 50 Cent and Carey declined comment, and Beyoncé’s management, run by her father, Mathew Knowles, did not return phone calls. “They’ve done it for tons of artists,” says a music-business source, referring to Muatassim’s parties, which are often jammed with supermodels. “Those guys are all over the world.”

Actually, Beyonce got a reported $2 million for performing for Gaddafi’s son.

Furtado now claims to feel remorse since she has been identified as taking the $1 million in blood money and pressure is on the others to divest themselves of Gaddafi money.

And that would be the same Usher who was supportive of Kanye West’s comments about George Bush.

This is really a sordid episode. Donating the money would be the least thing these execrable individuals could do. They assume the caricature of the bank robber giving the money back once caught and claiming no foul.

They know who Gaddafi is and who he has been.

There is not room in the liberal mind for both conscience and cash and clearly, cash wins.
