Generally, the Chief Law Enforcement Officer of a county (AKA the Sheriff) is a non-partisan elected position. It’s done that way because there should be no politics involved in the enforcement of the law. Unfortunately, Sheriff Dupnik has decided to be a politician instead of a CLEO. He’s started by voicing his opinion against SB1070, and now spewing forth on the shooting of Rep. Giffords. IMO, if he wants to be a politician, let him run for Mayor of Tucson, or Pima County Board of Supervisors. If he wants to be CLEO, then he needs to enforce the laws as they are written.
