“We The People” is my favorite, but they all bring back fond memories. Too bad we don’t have programs like this on TV now for our children.

Thank you, Wordsmith.

‘We are gonna elect a President….who’s gonna do what the people want.’

Judging by the posts on here that doesn’t seem to be the case;)

@Gaffa

A President, particularly in this day and age, will never do what ALL the people want. That is impossible, given the many competing groups that people can join today. Some examples are the abortion rights/pro-life groups and the anti-gun/2nd amendment folks. Other groups competing with one another are less clear, but still as combative.

@John
Agree – that’s when anyone, particularly politicians, who say they represent the people are phoneys. You maybe able to agree or even lead on a range of issues where the majority of people believe in the same or similar thing. Also in some cases you don’t always want a leader who does what the majority want – otherwise it would be near impossible to win a war if it’s dictated by ever changing opinion polls. That said – of course an elected and accountable leader – is still a million times better than a monarchy. Shame that Americans seem so fascinated by the privileged and dull goldfish bowl that is the Royal Family in the UK and that Kings, Queens, Princesses & Princes – as a desirable thing to have/be – feature so heavily in kids TV etc. Royalty should be disdained and not respected.

A true leader works to unite the country, it has been quite a while since we have had that in the USA. Setting forth an agenda will only make one popular with one’s base. It seems that today’s politicians know of no other way to lead. There are exceptions; Gov. Christie of New Jersey comes to mind.

Bush was a good leader in foreign policy/war but domestically he fell short, IMHO. Not since Reagan have we had a leader that put ideology aside and worked to better the American experience.
