DUBAI (Reuters) – Osama bin Laden urged insurgents in Iraq to unite with his al Qaeda followers, admitting that wrongs had been committed because of fanaticism, according to an audio recording aired on Monday.
“The interest of the Islamic nation surpasses that of a group … the interest of the (Islamic) nation is more important than that of a state,” said a voice which sounded like the al Qaeda leader’s in the tape carried by Al Jazeera television.
The recording was aired as Iraq’s government reported violence had dropped by 70 percent since the end of June, following a series of U.S.-led offensives against insurgents.
Iraq’s wing of al Qaeda is one of the key groups fighting U.S.-led forces and the Baghdad government, but bin Laden’s followers have angered other Sunni groups and tribes through their hardline interpretations of Islam and indiscriminate killing of civilians.
In Anbar, a former insurgent hotbed where Sunni Arab tribes have joined U.S. forces against al Qaeda, there has been an 82 percent drop in violent deaths, the government said.
Bin Laden acknowledged that some insurgents were involved in “wrongdoings,” mentioning a particular group of holy commandments that includes killings. He did not give further details.
“The mujahideen are the children of this nation … they do right things and wrong things,” bin Laden said. “Those who are accused of violations of God’s commandments should face trial,” he added.
“I advise … our brothers, particularly those in al Qaeda wherever they may be, to avoid fanatically following a person or a group,” he said. “The strength of faith is in the strength of the bond between Muslims and not that of a tribe, nationalism or an organization.”
In the recording, which Jazeera said was entitled “message to the people of Iraq,” bin Laden mentioned battles in the province of Diyala, indicating that he made the remarks since the start of a U.S. offensive there in June.
He said he was addressing “mujahideen (holy warriors) in Iraq,” Sunni Muslim militant groups fighting U.S.-led forces. Al Qaeda belongs to a school of Islam which regards members of Iraq’s Shi’ite Muslim majority as heretics.
Jazeera said bin Laden urged Iraqi tribes to uphold their “tradition of resisting” occupation, in an apparent reference to the presence of British forces in Iraq in the last century.
The speaker urged “scholars, jihadist and tribal leaders to work for reconciliation between fighting groups.”
He warned insurgents against enemy attempts to drive wedges between groups by planting agents among them, and said such agents should be punished, but only after their guilt was established through thorough investigations.
Last month, bin Laden issued three messages, including a video marking al Qaeda’s September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington in which about 3,000 people were killed.

Arabs don’t follow a claimed leader when the person is hiding thousands of miles away from the fighting. Leaders join the fight no matter how old or crippled they are. I would say the vast majority of Al Qaeda is really nothing but con artists and thugs using the Al Qaeda name to spread fear and make themselves bigger than what they are. After all, anybody can claim to be Al Qaeda. I wouldn’t be surprised if the vast majority of Al Qaeda websites are filled with nothing but spies from other countries all thinking they have stumbled on a massive Al Qaeda website. Imagine an Israeli spy writing down what a CIA spy has to say thinking the CIA spy is some terrorist in Pakistan. The CIA spy thinks the Israeli spy is some terrorist in Africa. Meanwhile the website creater is some 14 year-old kid in Egypt using Al Qaeda as a clan name for Battlefield 2.

I don’t think these are the only choices. Ignoring the radical fundamentalists appears to be one option. Border defense, a clampdown on Muslim immigration, and containment (via nuclear deterrence) also looks good. The whole notion of conquest of America via terrorism seems absurd to me, like proposing that someone can subdue an elephant with a BB gun.
One question – where was the rally you show pictures from (with the ‘Massacre those who insult Islam’ placards and so on) held? In most of Europe that stuff would be illegal (though it wouldn’t surprise me if the law wasn’t enforced), and even in the US you’d be on thin ice with direct advocacy of violence like this. Somewhere in the Middle East? Palestine? Just curious… I hope the answer isn’t ‘Michigan’, but I wouldn’t be shocked :-(.

One of those pictures is from London or Brussels I believe and these “protests” (really they are calls for war) occur frequently all over western Europe. I think these are from the “cartoon rage” last year. There are large, organized Islamic riots in Brussels and Amsterdam right now with hundreds of cars burning (see Brussels Journal). 22 AQ members were just indicted in Spain. Islamic riots in France a few years ago destroyed thousands of cars and damaged parts of the city. “Sensitive Urban Areas” are springing up all over western Europe. These are places the police will not go without military armored vehicles and Sharia law holds sway.
Areas like this exist within the USA also. I am stationed just outside Dearborn, Michigan. Guess where I do not go. We had a guy with ties to Hizbollah in Hemlock Park (Dearborn), dressed in black with an AK hunting “kuffer” a few weeks ago. He is not an uneducated, “poor minority” as those who claim this causes Islamic terrorism might think. He was a third year med student at Wayne State University. At 15 Mile Rd and Ryan (5 miles from me) we had islamofascists putting up fliers on cars calling for muslims to kill Christians and Jews. A muslim chanting “death to America” tried to attack Homestead AFB in Florida (Miami Herald). Another kicker is that this supposedly mentally ill man is a TEACHER at Miami-Dade schools!!
Minniapolis and other cities have Islamic radicals (or in their words “true followers of Islam”) taking over and forcing sharia on US citizens. Berkeley leftist protests are full of supporters for these islamofascists. And the signs they (the left and the islamofascists) carry all call for direct action to destroy the United States.
Despite the left’s insane cries that the USA is a “Bush Police State”, NOTHING happens to the people calling for the overthrow and destruction of America.
Building a wall will not stop the islamofascists and the left will never allow us to deport or even restrict immigration no matter what happens. Congress will not even FUND the fence they AUTHORIZED. Nuclear deterance does not work when our opponents are insane and fatalists who believe that allah, a pagan moon god, will protect them from US missles. Honestly, they actually believe our missles will fail if pointed at them. If those munitions work, then, without missing a beat, it becomes “allah’s will” and the Islamists play the victim of “zionist crusader imperialism” to the world.
