CNN Poll: 2-1 Margin Favor Cut, Cap And Balance

Loading

Despite the best efforts of Democrats to talk the House Republicans’ “cut, cap and balance” bill into the ground – it’s the worst bill ever, the founders would hate it and it will kill Medicare according to them – it seems as though the public is sold on it. At least according to this CNN poll.

But don’t expect CNN to actually report this eyebrow-raising finding. They don’t even mention it until the 13th paragraph in the article:

Republicans like the “cut, cap, and balance” approach to the debt ceiling, as do Democrats and independents. Most Americans support a balanced budget amendment, and most, but not as many, think an amendment is necessary to get federal spending under control. A balanced budget amendment passed the House earlier this week, but a vote in the Senate is expected to fail.

That’s right, even a majority of Democrats are on board with the CCB. In fact, the CCB got majority support in every single demographic polled notes Ed Morrissey:

Sixty-three percent of Democrats back the House bill. The least supportive age demographic is 50-64YOs at 62/37; the least supportive regional demographic is the Midwest at 61/39. Even those who express opposition to the Tea Party supports it 53/47.

In other words, it’s a clean sweep. Simply put, there is no political demographic at all where the CCB/BBA doesn’t get majority support. The BBA on its own does even better. It gets 3-1 support (74/24), and except for those Tea Party opponents (56%) and self-professed liberals (61/37), doesn’t get below 70% support in any demographic.

This thread is another saver; a must see for anyone who is skeptical that Republicans are working their buns off to roll back Pelosi’s and Obama’s socialist agenda – This thread and the adjoining one featuring Jeff Sessions. perhaps two of the most timely and most necessary articles posted here, imho. Kudos. Triple kudos. And thanks.

It might be helpful to actually look at the poll questions and responses themselves, rather than relying on Ed Morrissey’s spin. (The link is the same as the one on his own page.)

Have a look at question #14 and how people responded. That certainly couldn’t be clearer. Then have a look at question #19 and how people responded. Then at #21.

Morrissey seems to have totally discounted everything on the poll except for question #22, which, at the point where it occurs, hardly exists in a vacuum.

@ Greg

Are you serious? A CNN Poll comes back and a majority of the respondents favor tax increases for the rich and you believe that is earth shattering? The reason Morrissey focuses on the CCB part is because of the overwhelming support even though it is a CNN Poll.

@Aqua, #3:

How does anyone read overwhelming support for Cut, Cap and Balance from the poll responses?

What some poll responses demonstrate is strong support for a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. The fact that H.R. 2560 happens to include such a proposal doesn’t mean that there’s strong support for all of the bill’s other content.

@ Greg, #4

Question 23 included the cut and cap portions of the bill as well as balance. It was 2 to 1 in favor. If that isn’t overwhelming, I don’t know what is. It’s like Bush getting 51% of the popular vote and the press saying he squeaked by in 2004, but Obama gets an overwhelming mandate with 52%. I guess it’s only overwhelming if it’s in favor of the dems.

@Aqua, #5:

“Question 23 included the cut and cap portions of the bill as well as balance.”

Poll question#23:

In another proposal, Congress would raise the debt ceiling only if a balanced budget amendment were passed by both houses of Congress and substantial spending cuts and caps on future spending were approved. Would you favor or oppose this proposal?

The question neglects to mention the fact that republicans intend to pursue cut and cap in accordance with their own far-right social and economic agenda. Add that information–simply by identifying specifically what “another proposal” actually refers to–and your “strong approval” will instantly crash through the floorboards.

Consider poll question #19:

Based on what you have read or heard about the discussions between Congress and Barack Obama on the debt ceiling, do you think the Republicans in Congress have or have not acted responsibly?

No, have not: 63%

Aqua As you know after losing the popular vote to Gore in 200o “W” got 50.7% in 2004 a plurality of 3 million votes.In 2008 BHO got 52.9% and won by 9.5 million votes.100,ooo more votes in Ohio and Kerry wins Presidency in 2004. E.C +192 BHO in 2008 only +27 “W”. in 2004. 2004 very close 2008 not really.

@Aqua: Careful what you say. It was revealed on another thread that Obama and not the Navy SEALS kicked OBL off the planet. Given that he was nowhere near Pakistan he must have divine powers that only his supporters are aware of. I don’t want to see you get kicked off the planet for opposing him.

@ Greg, #6

OK, I can play that game too Greg. Poll question 24 shows 76% would like to see taxes raised on businesses that own private jets. Here is what it doesn’t ask. Would you like to see taxes raised on businesses that own private jets even though those businesses would divest their fleet costing thousands of jobs in the private aircraft community? By the way, there is evidence that the loss of jobs would occur in the private aircraft community. The same thing happened when the draconian left wing congress passed the yacht tax.

I have always suspected. 😉
