Sister Babe forwarded me this article via one of her friends, The Rock Test: A Hack for Men Who Don’t Want To Be Accused of Sexual Harassment. Please take 5 minutes to read it and let me know what you think down in the comments section. Personally, I thought it took a serious subject, offered a valid solution, and threw in some humor with it. A number of commenters on the post basically dismissed it as feminist drivel, as did a few folks on the two Facebook boards where I posted it. I responded by asking what specifics in the article they disliked, but nobody responded. So if you don’t like the post, please comment here about what specific part you disagree with – I’m genuinely curious. In a time where modern feminism has become so shrill and angry, when I see one of them doing it right I’d like to encourage them.

I’ve done The Rock Test all of my life. It’s called “Treat everyone with courtesy and respect when they allow you to”.
But it doesn’t even come close to addressing the stated problem, instead it begins with the assumption that all men are abusers and must prove otherwise.
The reason that men are refusing to place themselves in potentially sketchy situations is not so that they won’t be tempted to become abusive.
It’s to avoid the appearance of impropriety, and reduce the chance of a false accusation of sexual harassment.
The men who will apply The Rock Test are the ones who don’t need it, and it won’t do anything to address their very real fears.
This isn’t something that they can address with their own internal thoughts, because it does nothing to change what other people may perceive, see, say or do.
No, I won’t meet in private with a woman, or a group of women, or for that matter, a man. Not because I would treat them with less than courtesy and respect, but because it would only take one unethical woman or man to destroy my life. And there are more than one such out there.
Now, if feminists wish to address that problem, I’m all ears.

Back in the day, in the shop I worked, you could treat the women the same as the men. They liked joking around as much as anyone else, even when it got a little blue. However, that is out of the question today and women must be separated and treated differently from men for fear of providing someone with ammunition for a disagreement at a later date. Unfortunate, I think. I am glad I am no longer in the workplace.
