Journolist Redux?….The Herman Cain Witchhunt

The Herman Cain “sexual harrassment” story has a few interesting side stories. The biggest?

Well, let’s see….anyone remember Journolist? This nugget of a story from July 2010:

Politico might be an online publication, a part of the New Media, but when it comes to corrupted, left-wing arrogance they make the Washington Post look somewhat honest … somewhat. Part of the reason I reserve a special place in my heart to store up a unique resentment for all things Politico is due to the very fact that they practice their dark arts online. Like a toxic virus they spread over to the Internet where the right (by design) and the left (by accident) are trying to forever kill off the very thing Politico is — wolfish left-wing propagandists hidden in the sheeps’ clothing of “journalism.”

And yet these are the same bastards “journalists” who launched a smear attack on a private citizen for asking Their One a perfectly reasonable question, obsessed over Sarah Palin’s wardrobe (and yet ranked Obama being asked about his relationships with Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers as a 2008 top-ten ”media blunder“), and though they occasionally find Levi Johnston worthy of note, Department of Justice whistleblower, J. Christian Adams, remained a ghost up until and including Ben Smith’s factually challenged Nothing-To-See-Here gift to his embattled president.

Oh, and did you know that some of Politico’s “journalists” were members of Ezra Klein’s now infamous JournoList, including Mike Allen, Lisa Lerer, and Mr. Ben “I-Got-Yer-Back-Barack” Smith?

Politico is the crew that “broke” the “sexual harassment” story.

Interesting.

It’s also interesting how this thinly sourced story, with third hand informants, was timed for release on Sunday, knowing it would make front page news on Monday.

Journolist redux?

That being said Mr. Cain’s campaign didn’t handle it very well…more reporting from Politico:

It’s difficult – if not impossible – to explain Cain’s reversal from earlier Monday, when he said he wasn’t familiar with cash payouts, period, with his later admission that he had discussed terms of settlement with the NRA’s general counsel.

In fact, Cain’s latest statements on Fox and PBS bear a close resemblance to his campaign’s first response to POLITICO when asked about harassment charges under his leadership. “This was settled amicably among all parties many years ago,” Cain’s spokesman told POLITICO over a week ago. He subsequently said he was not referring specifically to a legal settlement.

He is a shoot from the hip guy that’s for sure, but he really needs to tighten the ship on his campaign. In the end I can’t agree more with Krauthammer:

KrauthammerThe problem that Cain has is that he’s winging it. He’s a very smart guy and he’s trying to handle everything as he remembers stuff. The problem is that this happened a long time ago and we saw him contradict himself on whether he knew about the settlement. He said in the beginning no, and then on the Greta show he talks about details of it. What he needs to do, and it’s not as if he’s lying, people don’t…I can’t remember what I had a lunch yesterday let alone what happened fifteen years ago, he needs to retire with his staff to make sure he knows the facts, call people who might remember it, and get the story in his own head straight otherwise he’s in deep trouble.
