Democrats try to stop inquiry into Climategate [Reader Post]

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has begun an investigation into whether Michael Mann manipulated data to show a rapid acceleration in global warming and Virginia Democrats are out to stop him.

Democratic Sens. Donald McEachin of Henrico and Chap Petersen of Fairfax County say their bills won’t give blanket immunity to colleges to defraud the state, but they would curb politically motivated probes.

Whether it’s a mindless shooting or climate change, Democrats never let a crisis go to waste.

Note that Democrats assert the investigation to be “politically motivated.” Does anyone imagine the climate change machine is something other than politically motivated?

And its no wonder they don’t want anyone peering behind the curtain. A report claiming that the Earth would see a huge increase in temperature over the next decade leading to massive food shortages was found to be terribly flawed. It’s called “an honest mistake.”

But that didn’t stop Scientific American from trumpeting it in big bold type.

Oops.

We have heard recently from the Goracle about the floods in Australia:

“As the earth warms, scientists tell us that we will see more and more extreme weather conditions. Each of these occurrences further underscore why we need to take immediate action to solve the climate crisis,” Gore wrote on his website Tuesday.

It wasn’t that long ago that the droughts alone in Australia were caused by global warming. Read the article carefully. Note that the word “flood” does not appear, but this does:

“This is the first drought in Australia where the impact of human-induced global warming can be clearly observed.”

Because it fits the model.

Their model.

Droughts are nothing new to Australia.

“From June until the present time so little rain has fallen that most of the runs of water in the different parts of the harbour have been dried up for several months, and the run which supplies this settlement is greatly reduced, but still sufficient for all culinary purposes… I do not think it probable that so dry a season often occurs. Our crops of corn have suffered greatly from the dry weather.”

That was written in 1791

Neither are Australian floods new.

See this prediction from 2007:

”It’s reasonable to say that a lot of the current drought of the last 12 to 13 years is due to ongoing global warming,” said the bureau’s Bertrand Timbal.

”In the minds of a lot of people, the rainfall we had in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s was a benchmark. A lot of our [water and agriculture] planning was done during that time. But we are just not going to have that sort of good rain again as long as the system is warming up.”

Mr.Timbal’s prognostication didn’t pan out so well. Once again- note that he said nothing of floods.

Australia’s state of Queensland finds itself facing what one official described as flooding of ‘biblical proportions.’ Dozens of towns have been submerged as rivers overran their banks from heavy rains and claimed at least eight lives in the process.

But today, both floods and droughts are caused by global warming.

Because it fits the new model. The new, better model.

Remember this classic from 2000?

However, the warming is so far manifesting itself more in winters which are less cold than in much hotter summers. According to Dr David Viner, a senior research scientist at the climatic research unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia, within a few years winter snowfall will become “a very rare and exciting event”.

“Children just aren’t going to know what snow is.”

See anything in that article about cold and snow in the future- other than it won’t be there?

Nope. Remember that.

And the esteemed Hadley Centre?

David Parker, at the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction and Research in Berkshire, says ultimately, British children could have only virtual experience of snow. Via the internet, they might wonder at polar scenes – or eventually “feel” virtual cold.

Children in Britain have just gotten a crash course in snow and cold.

Last month was the chilliest December in 100 years and one of the coldest months ever recorded in the UK, the Met Office said today.

The Met Office also said that December both “cold and snowy” and “dry and sunny.”

In between the snow storms, presumably.

And now we are told that global warming causes both more snow and less snow, at least in New York City.

The critical point of argument here is that in past warming predictions did not include more flooding along with droughts. Warming predictions did not include more snow and more bitterly cold winters along with less snow and warmer temperatures. Why not? Why are we hearing about this only now?

But now weather matters. Because it fits the model.

The one they just made up.

If it fits, it’s climate change. If it doesn’t fit, it’s weather.

A cynical person might suggest that they’re full of crap.

So, let’s get this clear.
ObamaCare was passed without debate because DEMOCRATS claimed ”the time for debate is over.”
Turned out DEMOCRATS were very wrong.

New York Rep Peter King should not conduct his investigation into what radicalizes Muslims in the USA because DEMOCRATS are afraid the very investigation itself might radicalize some.

Now DEMOCRATS are scared to investigate whether taxpayer money was squandered on a phonied-up research project because they are afraid it might lead to their pets getting less money than they had planned.

Seems like DEMOCRATS are a bit like snakes and bugs: they like to do their work in the dark.
Shine a light on them and they scatter.

Well, long before we had other disinfectants we had sunlight.
And, guess what?
Sunlight is somewhat of an effective disinfectant.

So, shine the light.

Do you remember what Michael Mann said last Jan when he was going to be investigated by his ”peers” at the National Academy of Science?
He contemptuously pointed out that the NAS didn’t scare him, ““it’s not the US Senate,” he said.

So, now he IS scared!

BTW, if you go back to the leaked e-mails you see Mann saying he’s only suffering from the same problem Obama claimed to be suffering from: Not communicating his message to the folks effectively enough.
But look closer.
Mann says he, himself, has no confidence in his own data and conclusions!
Here’s one where Mann says that:

“I walked into this hornet’s nest this morning! Keith and Phil Jones have both raised some very good points. And I should point out that Chris Folland, through no fault of his own, but probably through me not conveying my thoughts very clearly to the others, definitely overstates any singular confidence I have in my own [Mann and co-workers’] results.”

Well done you did your homework. Remember in the 70’s a lot of the same experts claimed the Ice age was around the corner.

warpix in the 70s (I was there I am in my 60s) there were NO national scientific academies that were predicting a new ice age. There was a book and some articles in popular magazines but not in peer reviewed scientific journals. The US Navy says that the Arctic Ocean will be ice free in summer by 2020 which will have national security issuses (no place for our subs to hide from surface ships) The government of EVERY country including China Israel and the Vatican believes that the planet is heating up, well every government except for Saudi Arabia and Iran. And yes extreme weather events will occur because of the increased heat (energy) in our atmosphere.

the leading climate change denier in the Senate is sen Inhofe. He also believes that the age of the planet is about 6000 years old as it says in the Bible, and that man coexisted with the dinosaurs ( like in the Flinstones) in fact he thinks that Noah put a pair of T-Rex onto his Ark along with some penguins. AND he is the leading voice against climate change/ global warming (they actually have different meanings to scientists).

thee AG of VA had his first subpoena for Mann’s records thrown out by a judge for failure to state sufficient cause. Mann wrote an excellent op-ed piece showing how this _anti-science_ attack ws similar to the attacks on the science showing a link between smoking and cancer, second hand smoke and cancer, acid rain killing forests, and the hole in the ozone layer. All these attacks on science of course were well funded by corporate interests just as the attacks on climate change are. Does anyone who posts here still smoke? Do you whdoubt the link between smoking and cancer also doubt climate change ?

I have to second the request to John. LINKS please. We want proof not leftist talking points.

@John:

also doubt climate change?

We lost one knucklehead to point at, laugh at, and generally wonder at their ignorance when BRob was tossed….but at least John is still around.

Who here is doubting the climate changes John?

well funded by corporate interests

Yeah, because we know the AGW folks aren’t well funded eh?

The claim CO2 traps heat is their Achilles heel.

CO2 is heavier than air…(1.5)…it will naturally settle to the low areas and migrate toward the oceans, where it is absorbed. While on it’s journey to the sea, plants and other forms of fauna will also absorb it as a food source. Until they alter the laws of physics, a canopy created of CO2 trapping heat, is and always will be nothing more than a financial assault on the energy industry and their customer base.

A better explanation is the cyclic behavior of the planet due to it’s asymetrical rotation and orbit around the sun.

“Milankovitch Theory describes the collective effects of changes in the Earth’s movements upon its climate, named after Serbian civil engineer and mathematician Milutin Milanković, who worked on it during First World War internment. Milanković mathematically theorised that variations in eccentricity, axial tilt, and precession of the Earth’s orbit determined climatic patterns on Earth.

The Earth’s axis completes one full cycle of precession approximately every 26,000 years. At the same time the elliptical orbit rotates more slowly. The combined effect of the two precessions leads to a 21,000-year period between the seasons and the orbit. In addition, the angle between Earth’s rotational axis and the normal to the plane of its orbit, obliquity, moves from 22.1 degrees to 24.5 degrees and back again on a 41,000-year cycle; currently, this angle is 23.44 degrees and is decreasing.

Other astronomical theories were advanced by Joseph Adhemar, James Croll and others, but verification was difficult due to the absence of reliably dated evidence and doubts as to exactly which periods were important. Not until the advent of deep-ocean cores and a seminal paper by Hays, Imbrie, and Shackleton, “Variations in the Earth’s Orbit: Pacemaker of the Ice Ages”, in Science (1976)[1] did the theory attain its present state.”

Yes, we have global warming but it sure isn’t caused by humans burning hydrocarbons. We have had GW since the last ice age, 30,000 years ago. Every 100,000years you can expect an ice age. It’s been happening for about the last 100 million years. The average temp rise is 1 degree every 100 years. We got another 70,000 years left, so relax. This famous Warming is caused by the sun’s heat trapped within our atmosphere by green house gases. 95% of green house gas is water vapor in the atmosphere. Another 3-4% is CO2 caused from the 63 active volcanoes around the world plus forest fires and such. You want to do something helpful? Stop Brazil from burning rainforest. They burn an area the size of Vermont every year!! And we need those forest to eat up the CO2. Relax everybody! Do you believe Al Gore invented the internet? Get real!
Do you really think we can solve this GW by battery cars, intermittent solar & wind power? Drill baby!

ck this site: http://www.ncpa.org/pdfs/GlobalWarmingPrimer.pdf

@aceofwands: LIke all the other gases in the atmosphere, carbon dioxide has a uniform concentration throughout the troposhere (that’s the part below the stratosphere, up to about 7 miles above sea level). It does not settle or concentrate in low-lying areas. The mixing forces are simply too strong for that to happen. There are exceedingly rare exception s to this – sudden plumes of volcanically/geologically released CO2 have most definitely been known to concentrate temporarily in low lying areas due to CO2 being denser than air, long enough to kill people in significant numbers. But, the CO2 dissipates into the atmosphere once the source is cut off – the wind and diffusion forces see to that.

The more distributed release of CO2 from fossil fuel combustion and decompostion of organic matter does not concentrate locally to a signficant extent, it just blows around and mixes more or less immediately.

I think that claims of proven man-made climate changes are obvious bad science at this point, driven financially by a lot of crooked government involvement. Just because it’s a crock does not mean we should make incorrect statements of our own.

I think you’d best regard John as a specimen at this point, rather than a competent or substantial debater.

not sure who you are quoting that the Arctic Ocean was going to be ice free in summer in 2013, the US Navy says 2020

Carbon Dioxide is essentially at the same concentrations at all altitudes. if CO@ “sank” your cellar would be full of it. Is it ? Do you believe that there is less CO2 in Denver than in Boston because of a difference in elevation ? Ace of wands better re read High school earth science

Commies/Marxists/Progressives lie when it suits thier purposes. Believe John is one of the useful idiots.

But the World IS sinking!
I was just reading about it.
The ambitious project to recreate the whole world as 300 smallish islands off Dubai is being abandoned.
The guy who bought “Ireland,” killed himself.
The guy who bought ”England” is in prison for writing bad checks.
Brangelina backed out on buying ”Ethiopia.”
So, the three hundred or so islands are slowly being reclaimed by the sea.
In their top condition:

How they look now:

🙁

The earth is warming quickly now, this rate would have nothing to do with long year 100,000 year cycles.

re: #22

Conservatives/Capitalists/Republicans have also been known to lie when it suits their purposes. Surely a few examples come to mind.

. minuteman 26 thinks that name calling is cool I bet he was a terror on the playground.

@DrJohn: Thank You DrJohn for coming to my defense.

Dr John do you think that the Arctic ice extent is growing or shrinking? Do you agree that it is shrinking, but just not as fast as some have predicted ? Is it the RATE or the direction that you believe is incorrect? 2010 was tied for smallest.

@John:

Recent massive volcanoes have risen from the ocean floor deep under the Arctic ice cap, spewing plumes of fragmented magma into the sea, scientists who filmed the aftermath reported Wednesday. http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20080625/sc_afp/sciencegeologyoceansvolcano

But the ice pack over the Antarctic is growing!
No volcanoes.
Huh!

Curt You tossing Brob is similar to Mike’s America tossing me.If all you guys and gals just want to watch Fox and pat each other on the back why not just say so and ban all that have differing views? It would be more honest.

Semper Fi

So Sherm do you think that ALL governments are behind this “hoax”? And that all national science academies also? And the Pope is he part of this giant conspiracy? And our military are they all in it also ? evolution is that a “hoax” also ? Do you believe taht teh Earth is warming staying the same or getting cooler? If there is a change (up or down, as some say that we are about to enter another ice age, what do you think is causing it? We are at a “dim” sun period so that can’t be it. Volcanic activity is about normal, so why are we having all these record high temp years????

@Wm T Sherman:

Wm T Sherman:

I do not disagree that CO2 will get mixed and tossed about the atmosphere. Daytime heating and increased wind activity will mix it and push it around. Nighttime cooling and the lack of wind will cool and let it start to sink again. CO2 concentrations change seasonally and hourly for that matter. Here is a link showing hourly fluctuations from Hawaii based on one year of readings. It will also show the seasonal change taking place.

http://www.ferdinand-engelbeen.be/klimaat/co2_measurements.html

For whatever it’s worth, this has just come out: Record melt from Greenland icesheet in 2010.

Sherm it is getting hotter in Switzerland and they think that it is AGW. have they been hoaxed too?

@rich wheeler:

Curt You tossing Brob is similar to Mike’s America tossing me.

Hey Rich….can you see through that ice you’re standing on?

@rich wheeler: Are you new here? He got his warning, he didn’t wish to abide it. Plain and simple.

I don’t censor, and no one on this site will have their comments censored or removed (if its not obscene or threatening) BUT if you don’t play by the rules I have no problem removing that person completely off the site. He has been around here for years and never got tossed after all of his idiocy but if I give a warning I’m not kidding. Whether you approve or not doesn’t both me one whit.

Hey Rich, if you don’t like it feel free to leave. B-rob was troll, but because he was “one of yours” you ride to his defense. How dispicible. I thought you might be more of a moderate, but it’s clear where your true feelings lie. You’re beyond salvage.

John, the fact you haven’t provided any links tells us you “just know” AGW is true. Really, leftists like yourself aren’t even a challenge. Go back to DUNG or KOS to preach your religion.

Mann’s hockey stick graph gives a bad name to hockey sticks. The model is completely flawed because applying red noise to it produces the same results (impossible).

I listen to Lord Monckton ( Inhofe’s favorite debater for congressional hearings) destroy this statistical myth. The last hearing had the Cap and Trade crowd refuse the right of Monckton to speak. Gingrich was prepped by Monckton and did a magnificent job as a layman.Gore, Kerry and Graham were made to look like fools and most of the global warming bunk was tabled.Cap and Trade is DOA. Lindsay Graham has disappeared on this issue.

John -ref26- Saved all that for the two tours I served in Vietnam while you were hiding in Canada.

The temperature changes, John. It goes up, and it goes down. It was warmer in Europe 800 years ago than it is today :

The Medieval Warm Period – a global phenomenon, unprecedented warming, or unprecedented data manipulation?

The UN climate reporting body, the IPCC, used to know that. About 10 years ago, the Medieval Warm Period disappeared off their offical climate record, without comment.

Then we have large temperature changes recorded in ice bore hole temperatures, going back about 400,000 years:

http://rps3.com/Files/AGW/VOSTOKICECoreObservations_Stewart2009.pdf

Did people cause the the prehistoric temperature to go up and down, John?

I highly recommend the presentation by Burt Rutan on the subject of climate change, available here, in both Powerpoint and pdf format:

http://rps3.com/Pages/Burt_Rutan_on_Climate_Change.htm

In terms of conspiracy or hoax — well, what would you call the revelations contained in the Climategate e-mails:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/jamesdelingpole/100017393/climategate-the-final-nail-in-the-coffin-of-anthropogenic-global-warming/

Your condescending, carping statements that I have no good reason to believe the things that I wrote were made with no supporting links from you at all, John. I’ve given you some links to the skeptical point of view, to show that I have my reasons. Where is your documentation, John? Why do you believe what you believe?

Greg, you do know why, “Greenland” is named, “Greenland” do you? A few handful of centuries ago, when first colonized by Nordic interests it was a lush green land fertile for crop/livestock use … let alone the Global temps were higher than we are used to today.

As for the report you link? Isn’t it funny, Greenland is a center of Geothermal activity and due to the Earth’s axial tilt makes it a focal point of Solar energy exposure but yet the report fails to comment about such facts and even omits discussion the Volcanic activity of last year in the tectonic reigon from the event in Iceland. Greenland and Iceland shares the same tetonic plate and volcanic networks. It honestly shouldn’t surprise people why the air over an area exposed to more solar radiation and resurgent geological activity should be warmer. Then again most of those shoving Man Made Global warming as true are neither geologists or aware of the implications of Geology to the direct environment Humanity lives in.

Oh right, apparently Iceland’s volcanic eruption has left the short attention span of the environmental groups who still hammer that it’s Co2 and not the sulfur oxidies from Iceland’s or other more active Volcanos across the globe that causes warming…

@oil guy from Alberta, #39:

That would be the same Lord Monckton who has advocated mandatory monthly AIDS blood test screening for the entire UK population, and placing anyone who tests positive in quarantine for life?

Really. I’m not making this up.

That’s a low brow hit for you, Greg. Yes it’s a 1987’s Science journal where he suggests a solution to prevent epidemic infection is to screen test and to quaratine, but it’s not a radical concept to try to leverage as the United States of America was considering a similar program itself. Now how does AIDS and finding a solution to halts its spread when medical technology had no treatment/cure existed relate to Global Warming?

Other Nations in Africa? Such people would be luckly to be quaratined to live the rest of their life in comfort, most end up to this day without treatment drugs and possibly worse an AK-47 bullet to the brain by constantly warring factions within contested nations. In either way for most in African nations, it’s a death sentence.

John wants to know if CO2 settles in the cellar.

Depending on the circumstance, yes it can and does.

From Italy…

“In general this problem receives little attention from local governments, although public concern is raised periodically when anomalous toxic-gas concentrations suddenly kill humans or livestock. For example, elevated CO2 concentrations have been linked to the death of at least 10 people in the central Italian region of Lazio over the last 20 years, while it was the CO2 asphyxiation of 30 cows in a heavily populated area near Rome in 1999 which prompted the present soil-gas study into the distribution of the local health risk.”

From the EPA…

“During the second week of September 2008, the greater Wichita metropolitan area experienced record rainfall and flooding. Some residents living in the area reported pilot light outages which occurred during the heavy rains. Local responders conducted air monitoring in the residential areas which reported the pilot light outages. Underground gases such as carbon dioxide and methane may have seeped into the basements during the heavy rainfall. These gases can reduce oxygen levels and may have caused the pilot lights to extinguish.

When carbon dioxide and methane concentrations rise too high within buildings, oxygen levels can fall dangerously low. This presents a health danger to the residents living in these homes. EPA Region 7 personnel conducted the recent sampling event to determine whether chemical contamination was the cause of the gas intrusion event.

Last October, the city of Wichita requested the assistance of an EPA research lab located in Ada, Oklahoma, to evaluate the oxygen depletion event which had affected some area residences during heavy rain. The EPA lab agreed to work with the city on a long-term study in an effort to identify the potential source of the gas intrusion that occurred last September.”

Monckton advocated AIDS isolation and universal testing in 1987, in the early days of the epidemic when little was known about AIDS, and what would happen next, and there was no cure, Greg. He has since disavowed the statement as an impractical idea. Other views on AIDS at the time included the belief of a prominent scientist that the HIV virus does not cause AIDS, claims by patient advocates that dextran sulfate could cure the disease (false), and extreme outrage / accusations of cultural genocide amongst homosexual activists when it was suggested by an NIH scientist that maybe the homosexual bath houses that hastened the course of the epidemic should be closed. What do you think of that?

But anyway Greg, “poisoning the well” to shut down discussion only works if the person you are attempting to discredit is being used as an authority. Monckton is not so used; he’s an advocate and popularizer — it’s not about believing him per se, it’s about whether you buy the arguments and facts, or not.

The resonable thing is for this argument to be pursued based on facts. Many of the skeptics have spoken out in detail. I’ve presented some of what influences me. Where are your facts?

Why don’t you take a look at Burt Rutan’s stuff, linked above? I await your debunking of his reasoning.

@aceofwands: These events all have to do with local concentrations of gas coming out of the ground and temporarily being at hazardous levels. I already mentioned this as a known exception. Your claim that atmospheric CO2 has a general tendency to concentrate itself in low lying areas, or anywhere else, is false. Once a gas is diluted in other gases, it does not spontaneously undilute itself.

The Flint Hills… The soil and rock under Wichita shares that with the Flint Hills and the rock is known to trap Co2… Gee I wondered if EPA knew that when it was in my Home town…

Yup Greg, thats the guy who wanted to quarantine Aids humanely so that it wouldn’t become the killing machine it is today. An opportunity missed, especially for homosexuals. This not made up. The Centre for Disease Control said it was an opportunity missed. Aids has killed millions and is still out of control. Well done “freedom fighters” of the left. You forgot about DDT, another lefty meme. Over 50 million died(estimate). You lefties sure like eugenics. Heard about the lefty baby killing mill in Philthadelphia? ( another 50 million butchered nation wide). Yup, lefties have all the correct answers.

I think Greg has conflated “quarantine” with “concentration camp.”
Admit it, Greg – that’s what you did.

In South Africa, the rate of HIV infection is about 30% nationwide. How crazy is that?

http://www.avert.org/safricastats.htm

Remember: In 1987 nobody really understood what was happening or how the epidemic would develop in the West.
