Schieffer: The NRA are like Nazis and we must defeat them

Bob Schieffer somehow topped Chris Matthews during CBS News’s special coverage of President Obama’s gun control press conference on Wednesday, as he became the worst caricature of a foaming-at-the-mouth cheerleader for the chief executive. Schieffer lauded “one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard him [Obama] deliver”, and compared Obama’s new gun control agenda to Lyndon Johnson’s push for civil rights legislation in the 1960s.

The CBS veteran even went so far to liken the President’s cause to the ten-year hunt for 9/11 mastermind Osama bin Laden and the difficult endeavor of winning World War II.

BOB SCHIEFFER: …Let’s remember: there was considerable opposition when Lyndon Johnson went to the Congress and…presented some of the most comprehensive civil rights legislation in the history of this country. Most people told him he couldn’t get it done, but he figured out a way to do it. And that’s what Barack Obama is going to have to do…what happened in Newtown was probably the worst day in this country’s history since 9/11. We found Osama bin Laden. We tracked him down. We changed the way that we dealt with that problem. Surely, finding Osama bin Laden; surely, passing civil rights legislation, as Lyndon Johnson was able to do; and before that, surely, defeating the Nazis, was a much more formidable task than taking on the gun lobby.

SCHIEFFER: This is a turning point in this country, and the President is going to have to do more than just make a speech about it. This is one of the best speeches I’ve ever heard him deliver, but it’s going to take more than that from the White House. He’s going to have to get his hands dirty. He’s going to have to get in there and – and work this problem until he gets it done. But unless we figure out a way to make sure that something like Newtown never happens again, we’re not the country that we once were. I think we still are. I think there’s hope. I think something’s going to happen here.

Yes, let’s hunt down those NRA dogs and kill them all. We wiped out the Nazis, we wiped out Bin Laden. We can do the same to the NRA.

Never mind that Constitution thing.

Gee, tragedies sure bring out the best in the left, don’t they? Good grief.

“Good grief” is right. Schieffer wasn’t comparing the NRA to Nazis, in the sense of saying they are similar. He was simply stating the fact as he saw it, if we defeated an enemy as great as the Nazis, surely we can defeat the gun lobby. He could have made the point by saying, “If we can send a man to the moon, then we can defeat the gun lobby”, and he wouldn’t be saying the NRA is the same thing as going to the moon—only that defeat of their lobby is not as great an objective going to the moon, and if we can accomplish that former objective, we can surely defeat the NRA’s gun lobby.

This is a common enough error in the hyper-conservatives war on the English language.

    @liberal1(objectivity):

Odd that Schieffer would mention LBJ’s sweeping welfare giveaways, that have proven to only be destructive to black families, but did not mention LBJ’s sweeping gun control laws passed by the Democrat held Congress and signed by LBJ after the assassination of a president that was beloved by the entire nation.

Oh, wait, there was NO sweeping new gun legislation after the assassination of John Kennedy, just as there was none after the assassination of Lincoln, or any other U.S. president.

I would be interested in knowing if Bob Schieffer is willing to do without his armed security, or if he thinks that the armed security that protects the President of the United States should be limited to carrying magazines that contain 10 rounds, or less?

I might have to give BOB SCHIEFFER a pass on his latest rant. Dementia is an insidious disorder. The images of Hitler’s Nazi Germany may be fading in his memory, although when he saw obama surrounding himself with school children, he may have had flash back of images of Hitler’s photo-opps with the innocents. So it is not too large of a leap to think he may have inadvertently confused obama’s mention of the evil NRA with the evil Nazi’s.

    @Hard Right:
Good catch, and thanks for linking it here,HR.
It was a VERY old, very small study.
    It was flawed.

I frequent a couple gun stores and shooting ranges that also sell.
Some of these take used guns on consignment for resale.
Just as you have to jump through all the hoops to buy a new gun, so, too, do you have to if you want one of these.

Obama’s use of it shows shoddy workmanship by his speechwriters…..again.
That Bob S. was ”impressed” by this speech is proof he is not a journalist.

Revisionist histories are simply false narratives couched as history.
The fact that there might be a few who see through these lies is irrelevant to the speechwriters and speech reader.
All they care about are fooling most of the people as often as possible.

Yes, lib1, he was. He was stating that the NRA is an evil to be defeated, like OBL, like those against the civil rights movement, and……………….like the Nazis.

Hey, I was impressed by Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o’s speech about faith in God, after his “girlfriend’s” death, too. Doesn’t mean it was factual, accurate, and/or real.

The pic of Schieffer and the caption are accurate enough, though. I just hope that more and more people are waking up to the cheerleading by our media, instead of believing that it is honest, integrity driven journalism.

@liberal1(objectivity): That’s the point. “Defeating” the gun lobby? You mean defeating law-abiding citizens.

AND, we have to pull in race and terror. Beating those who know that taking some of the guns away won’t do a damn thing to stop a mentally ill (or sane) person from killing lots of people is now likened to beating a racist and terrorist?

“The NRA are the same as racists, terrorists, and nazis . . . ”

Yup, that was the message, and to the naive, that’s how Obama and his state media are keeping power when they shouldn’t. This is the hypnosis they are keeping too many of the citizens under. A house divided . . .

Ready to think for yourself, lib1? (I still contend that you are being paid to attack the non-believers on conservative blogs. That’s the only way you could write the things that you write. There’s no conviction, no sense of goodness, no logic, and no Reason).

BOB SCHIEFFER is yet another living proof that age doesn’t always bring either maturity or wisdom.
As far as finding “a way to make sure that something like Newtown never happens again”, well, gun control is not the way. After all, the worst mass murders in US history didn’t involve guns. So even if Obama could wave a magic executive order and make every gun in the world disappear today, never to be manufactured again, “something like Newtown” would still happen, and we would have no way to stop it.

Nah, Nathan, if he were being paid, he’d have been fired by now. Not even liberals are willing to waste their own money.

Liberal insanity – “some parts of the constitution we want..some make us Nazi’s” . Four more years of this and I doubt a liberal will be elected to the white house for many years to come.. it just takes one big mistake spelled OBAMA…

Its impressive how facts are overlooked by the Leftist Media in their nightly guise of dispensing the news. The nightly news was on in the kitchen when I got off work and the news announcer actually stated that gun sales would now have to run back ground checks, as if up to this point they NEVER did them. The normal sheeple will hear this and believe that the Pretender in Chief is a hero for making the country safer.

Hell Nan, they are still citing that bullsh*t study where the guy claimed you were more likely to be killed with your gun than protected by it. Forget that it was debunked over a decade ago.
As the Kennedy assassination conspiracists have taught me, people believe what they want to believe because it feeds their egos. Leftists are a major example of this.

Hard Right: If you wanna believe JFK was killed by a lonenut who in turn was killed by a lonenut up to his eyeballs in mafia contacts, which allowed LBJ who was facing the Senate investigation into Bobby Baker reopening in Dec. ’63 to suddenly become POTUS…go for it. After the murder of Kennedy…the Senate quietly closed down the investigation.

The Warren Commission Report is a bunch of junk.

    Obama:
“This attack is another reminder of the threat posed by al-Qaida and other violent extremist groups in North Africa. In the coming days, we will remain in close touch with the government of Algeria to gain a fuller understanding of what took place so that we can work together to prevent tragedies like this in the future.”

I’m annoyed these guys are again re-writing history. It was Eisenhower who signed the first set of Civil Rights legislation and LBJ was NOT a proponent until he saw he would gain politically from it. And, of course, what LBJ signed did no good anyway – affirmative action does no one good – and the Fair Housing Act paved the way for horrid Community Reinvestment Act which led to the housing collapse. Social engineering doesn’t work no matter how hard governments try.

I’ve read the WCR and the conspiracy books. Besides catchcing the conspiracy books in lies as to what the WCR said, they ended up proving JFK was killed by a lone gunman and that there was no conspiracy.
Believe what you want, just don’t expect me to buy into a lie.
