The TSA is soliciting companies to supply dynamite according to the FedBizOpps.Gov website.
13–Unimax dynamite
Solicitation Number: HSTS02-14-Q-NCP056
Agency: Department of Homeland Security
Office: Transportation Security Administration
Location: Headquarters TSAThe DHS Transportation Security Administration (TSA) requires the following items, Exact Match Only, to the following:
LI 001: UNIMAX extra gelatin NG- SIZE 1 1/2″ X 8″ tube shell DN231415008E, 1980, EA;
According to the company:
• UNIMAX is an excellent primer for Dynomix (ANFO), Dynomix-WR (WR ANFO) or other detonator sensitive packaged product and can be used as a secondary primer in hard seams or at the top of the explosive column.
• Minimum diameter is 25 mm (1 in).
• Minimum detonator is No. 8 strength.
• Storage at elevated temperatures and/or high humidity for 1 to 6 months can reduce the performance of Unimax depending on the diameter. Consult your Dyno Nobel representative for specific recommendations.
• Dynamites are susceptible to sympathetic detonation when applied in very wet conditions where boreholes are closely spaced and/or where geological conditions promote this effect. Consult your Dyno Nobel representative for recommendations where these conditions exist.
Now maybe I am just tired and not thinking straight but I can think of no good reason for the TSA to need dynamite.
What about you?

It might be because the TSA operates the National Explosives Detection Canine Teams Program. They train the dogs that search for hidden explosives at border crossing points, airports, etc.
@Greg: A thousand pounds?
Some of the bomb-sniffing dogs have an impaired sense of smell, but remain on the government payroll because of federal Equal Opportunity laws.
@Greg:
OK, that was funny
Stupid question.
They need dynamite because they have stuff to blow up, of course.
Like the homes of conservatives. Like conservative blogs. Like tea party members.
Just blow them away. They won’t be missed.
You can’t make airlines safe without blowing them up.
An explosion now and then will keep TSA screeners on their toes.
Sadly, based on what this administration says and does, EVERY action is now suspicious. I have no idea why various, non-enforcement entities need millions of rounds of ammuntion or the TSA needs explosives.
I was just thinking of the bombs, weapons, chemicals and explosives that the TSA uses to test security, and how in some tests every single item made it onto the plane. With a 70% chance of all this ending up on a plane why do they need dynamite?
