Twitter thread by Drew Holden:

The biggest news out of NYT’s “bombshell” on Trump’s taxes is that it has flattened a conspiracy theory among Democrats & the media, popular in 2016-17, that Trump was hiding his taxes because of an illicit connection to Russia.

I’ve got some apology candidates👇

You may remember that, back when “Russian collusion“ was the talk of the town, countless pieces and tweets surmised that Trump hadn’t released his taxes because they would be filled with Russian connections.

Well, they weren’t. Wonder if we’ll get any follow up from @ewarren?

Or perhaps @HillaryClinton, who made this conspiracy theory a component of her 2016 campaign, will be interested in following up?

Or perhaps we’ll hear something new from @ChrisMurphyCT, who pushed this line more than perhaps any elected official?

I’m sure that @maddow, @allinwithchris or anyone else at @MSNBC would always be happy to have him back on, Senator.

Or maybe @RonWyden would like to follow up on his letter request, now that we know the dastardly contents of Trump’s taxes?

Et tu, @DickDurbin?

It wasn’t just in the Senate either. Here’s @SpeakerPelosi pushing the same entirely unverified claim.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that @RepMaxineWaters may be the most unhinged member of Congress.

Not an exaggeration to say the Dems were unified in pushing this allegation without evidence. Here’s @TheDemocrats.

But it wasn’t just the Dems. The media put together countless think pieces and investigations and whimsical musings on this subject, too, that went up in smoke.

Come take a bow, @CNN.

@Politico wasn’t all that far behind them.

I’m exactly zero percent surprised to see that chief Russian collusion cheerleader @MSNBC got in on this one. Also featuring @KatyTurNBC and @TimOBrien.

More of the same here from @abcnews, with another special shout out to @HillaryClinton.

Both @thedailybeast and the funny men got involved on this one, too.

Does anyone remember the discourse? I remember the discourse.

And you had @HuffPost being, well, Huff Post.

But the real champions here are the blue check big thinkers.

We’ll start out with the gold standard in bad takes, @JRubinBlogger.

The New York Pravda(Times)still a total wastes of Freedom of the Press all those Trees to make the Paper and all that Ink to still print this liberal leftists rag its no wonder most Americans do not trust the M.S. Media

File that under “mountain of evidence readily available”.

Thing is, Democrats KNOW these are lies from the beginning… they just don’t care.

March 22, 2021 – Rich people are dodging more taxes than the IRS realized, study finds

The researchers argue this undetected tax-dodging exacerbates income inequality by increasing the share of the nation’s total income that’s hoarded by a small number of elites.

It’s also costing the feds a pretty penny — the top 1 percent is responsible for more than a third of all unpaid federal income tax, and collecting what that group owes would increase federal revenues by about $175 billion a year, according to the paper.

“From a government revenue perspective, the top of the income distribution is the sub-population where understanding the extent of tax evasion is the most important, due to the high and increasing concentration of income in the United States,” reads the study, authored by researchers from the IRS, the London School of Economics, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley.

But the researchers note that the difficulty of untangling rich taxpayers’ finances or taking them to court can make it harder for officials to go after these kinds of tax evaders.

The IRS’ enforcement staff and audit rates have steadily declined over the last decade as its funding shrank by about 20 percent since the 2010 fiscal year, commissioner Chuck Rettig recently told congressional lawmakers.

Who benefits when the IRS enforcement budget is cut?

The revenue lost in a single year to tax evasion by the top 1 percent would have paid for Trump’s border wall project 12 times over.

@Greg: If only those wealthy Democrats that keep supporting higher taxes would pay THEIRS. Like Buffett and Soros. Kerry, Abrams, Clinton Foundation all dodged taxes.

March 20, 2021 – The Government Just Admitted It Doesn’t Really Try to Collect Rich People’s Taxes

By some estimates, the wealthiest 1 percent of Americans manage to avoid paying about a quarter-trillion dollars of owed taxes every single year. Now, new government data show that audits of the super-rich and large corporations have hit a new low, leaving billions of dollars of uncollected taxes at precisely a moment when lawmakers say new revenue is needed to fund infrastructure and climate investments.

In response, two progressive Democratic lawmakers have authored legislation cracking down on tax evasion.

One quarter of a trillion dollars per year…

They’re not talking about lawful strategies to reduce taxes owed. They’re talking about tax evasion.

@Greg: I am anxious for the lying Democrats to jack up the taxes all they want. You fools that voted for this catastrophe need to see the disaster you’ve brought. Voters will turn on you and MORE fraud will be necessary to steal the next election.
