Rick Perry says Marines are not criminals

GOP presidential hopeful Rick Perry is accusing the Obama administration of “over-the-top rhetoric” and “disdain for the military” in its condemnation of a video that purportedly shows Marines urinating on dead bodies in Afghanistan.

No one has been charged in the case, but officials in the United States and abroad have called for swift punishment of the four Marines.

A military criminal investigation and an internal Marine Corps review are under way. The Geneva Conventions forbid the desecration of the dead.

Perry tells CNN’s “State of the Union” that he thinks the Marines involved should be reprimanded, but not pursued with criminal charges.

What these marines did was wrong, I get it. If you have not been in their shoes and had your friends blown up beside you then you have NO clue how they must feel. This one will go away a lot faster than when Bush was President. He got hung in the press every day for hours because of the soldier actions, and yes they where wrong so spare me the lecture.

Let the punishment fit the ”crime.”
Probably probation and a promise not to do it again.

@Nan G: You are spot on Nan!! I remember when our laws relevant to punishment for a crime were altered to reflect “state of mind”, we see it all the time in our legal systems. Such things as hate crimes now typically will call for a harsher punishment especially if it is against a homosexual. Also punishment can be less stringent if the poor thing was raised in an abusive family and that somehow justifies the action. Do I agree with this, not very much but its out there and this incident demands similar scrutiny. I have seen your posts frequently and your assessments are sound, well-reasoned, and delivered with respect.

Good common sense from Perry.

Any responsible President of the United States should be expected to publicly condemn such a video. This is one of those situations where saying nothing would be immediately portrayed as tacit approval.

Such incidents give enemy propagandists tools to work with. They increase the likelihood of terrorist retaliation against U.S. military personnel who weren’t even involved.

Greg… BULL! Enemies don’t need an excuse for propaganda. This is an excuse for our apologists, yet again!

@Greg:
No, not even close; any “responsible POTUS” would say what Allen West said, and add, “if they don’t like it, we’ll piss on the whole country, and leave them to the tender mercies of their “brothers” in the Taliban.”

West nailed exactly how it should be handled.

that give you an idea of having RICK PERRY FOR PRESIDENT, THERE IS ONE MAN
STANDING UP WITH AMERICA, where everyone is protected with his word alone, no dithering, no mistake, no chance for not having understood it, that’s who you can trust to lead,
where was OBAMA when they exploded on IEDS, where was the warning to wipe them up. miles around,
for each one explosion; WHO was protecting the BRAVEST OF THIS COUNTRY,
HE WAS TOO BUSY WITH LETTING THE OPEN BORDER’S FLOW OF ILLEGALS COMING TO TERRORIZE THE SOUTHERN STATES. HE WAS BUSY WITH DISCUSSING WITH THE MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD AND ARAB SPRING.
