CNN reports that Rick Perry will withdraw from the Republican presidential race today, based on information from two sources in the campaign. No one who followed the polling can be surprised by this decision. Perry has not come out of the mid-single digits in South Carolina for weeks, and his debate performance on Monday was good but no game changer. The question for Perry was why he bothered to continue at all after his expensive poor showing in Iowa and his non-entity status in New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Politico reports that Perry will endorse Newt Gingrich for the nomination on his way out:
Rick Perry is expected to drop out later this morning at an 11 a.m. press conference and endorse Newt Gingrich, two sources confirmed to POLITICO.
Maggie Haberman and David Catanese call this “a huge boost” for Gingrich, but Perry was only polling 5-6% in South Carolina. Jon Huntsman’s endorsement of Mitt Romney would have been equally “huge.” However, it does hurt Rick Santorum, who had gotten the endorsement of the collected social conservatives last week from their meeting in Texas, and who could have used the boost.
Too bad, really. Would have expected him to wait until after ABC’s anti-Newt interview came out; if it were actually sufficiently shocking then there would still have been an outside chance for him. But he may well have made the decision to drop a couple days ago, before that interview was in the news.

AMERICA TAKE IT IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT YOU ALL LOST AN EXCEPTIONAL PRESIDENT.

@ilovebeeswarzone: Yes, we as a country have made a poor choice but I firmly believe that God is in control of the universe and scripture teaches that He places “kings” in power and removes them to serve His purposes.
Perry’s insight and policies and vision and proven experience are what is needed to get us out of the terrible mess we are in but maybe we have not fallen far enough yet to humble us.
I firmly believe if Romney is our nominee, we lose to Obama. I will soldier on to support the anti-Romney. If Romney is our nominee, I will have to make a choice to stick to my principles or be pragmatic. Being from Texas I probably have the luxury of sticking too my principles because Texas is a solid Red state.
As a matter of pragmatism I believe you must spend YEARS going around the country slapping backs and collecting chits in order to win the nomination. As Perry stated, and as best as I can tell from reading and research, he is sincere that he has never had as his goal in life to be POTUS or to be rich. He just wanted to serve is country. Sounds idealistic and naive but I so like to think that we are not all so jaded that we can not just simply vote for the best man for the job.
If God forbid Obama wins a second term…Perry 2016!

which are preparing for it, how come as an example of it, the IOWA MESS UP SO MUCH AS TO DECLARE THE WRONG WINNER, how come the NORTH CAROLINE AFTER working so meticusly as they said, manage to pass dead voter slips on, it’s unacceptable also, at this time of the highest technology ever
to help fix the wrong,, just a couple of those and multiply by many hundreds, serve as to get another failure at the end. every one will have to be alert and active to expose the corrupt one.
I think NEWT is able to get there.
