Rebecca Mansour:
Whether or not Melania Trump cribbed a passage from a Michelle Obama speech, there is one crucial sentiment Donald Trump’s Slovenian born wife certainly didn’t copy from Obama’s — the inherent pride of being an American citizen.
As the media pours over one passage in Melania Trump’s Republican National Convention speech that is similar to Michelle Obama’s 2008 speech at the Democratic National Convention, they overlook a key sentence that was undeniably written by Mrs. Trump and reveals all the difference in the world between these two women and their husbands.
“On July 28th, 2006, I was very proud to become a citizen of the United States — the greatest privilege on planet Earth,” the smiling Mrs. Trump said to thunderous applause.
Speaking with the thick accent of a non-native speaker, she flubbed the word “citizen” for “citizens,” but everyone understood her meaning, and that endearing verbal quirk and the obvious pride with which she said those words was immediately recognizable to those of us who come from immigrant families.
My grandmother, a Lebanese war orphan who was saved by the American Red Cross after World War I, would have whole-heartedly echoed Melania Trump’s sentiments. Both my immigrant grandparents adored this country and sent their sons to fight for it in World War II and Korea.
In fact, because my grandmother had no birth records due to the Great War, the immigration officials at Ellis Island made July 4th her birthday – which has been a further source of patriotic pride for my family because our American story was “born on the Fourth of July.”
What a difference these sentiments are to Michelle Obama’s infamous remarks during the 2008 campaign, when she said, “For the first time in my adult life, I am really proud of my country.”
Class, dignity and pride, too bad the fool is not a US citizen. No matter how many times one witness the swearing in of new US citizens, a tear always arises in everyone’s eye, similar to having the EGA pressed into the palm of a Marine on graduation. Not a dry eye in the audience.
Only proud after Obama was in the whitehouse Michelle Obama yeah and now becomes a food scold and forces schools to serve kids healthy pukepaste
You are so full of sh-t.
Here’s the reality. Melania Trump, however fine she may be in her own right, is trophy-wife No. 3 of a narcissistic multi-billionaire who views the U.S. presidency as the brightest possible feather he could stick in his cap. He views it as an objective; as an achievement; as a thing to be acquired for his trophy case. He hasn’t got a frickin’ clue what the job actually entails. He’s just certain that whatever it is, Donald can handle it. Never mind the details; all problems can be overcome by force of will. (Or maybe by some equivalent of corporate bankruptcy. We can always print up the money necessary to pay off the debt, and move on to the next project.)
I wish people would open their eyes. That doesn’t mean they have to turn them to Hillary Clinton. You’re just letting things be set up that way.
@Greg:
Says the guy that still supports a serial sexual predator, who trolls for women because he is saddled with the furthest thing from a trophy wife one can get. Sort of a gag gift… so to speak. Says the guy that blindly excuses the Clinton’s making millions off of their government influence, since they have no marketable skills.
Says the guy that thinks Hillary is not a liar.
I am saddled with or by nobody, Mr. Bill. Perhaps you are projecting?
Talk you you later. I am presently watching tonight’s episode of Trumpery on Parade, which I understand is intended to be the pilot for a 4-8 year reality series.
@Greg: Perhaps you should read with your open eyes, not the ones which which you see viable candidate Hillary.
Michelle Obama gave an excellent speech and the rabid right went into full scale assault mode, trashing her to no end.
Melania Trump plagiarizes Michelle’s speech and all of a sudden, according to the rabid right, it’s not only an excellent speech but goes on into another full scale assault mode and again trashes Michelle Obama.
It’s just hard to make sense of today’s rabid right. I guess it’s like it’s okay for GWB to prop his feet on the oval desk but not okay for an Obama or maybe that it’s fine for GWHB to read a book to school kids when a black president does it, well, just wait a goddamn minute!
But it doesn’t have to be racial I suppose. I mean we have trump saying it’s fine that Pence made the wrong vote on Iraq (while he was really more of a main driver) but yet it’s inexcusable that Hillary voted for it-and in Trump fashion, even doubling down on that.
Do you guys actually believe yourselves?
@Ajay42302: Michelle was attacked for her “I’ve never been proud of my country until now” remark, which was not only totally selfish, but stupid. It turns out SHE stole her lines but, of course, no one but liberals are so anal as to search every word to see if someone once gave a speech where they used the same now a, verbs and adjectives. As I said, odd that the left leaped on this like a duck on a June bug… kinda like they knew it was coming.
Well, I’m not voting for Melania. I am more concerned with keeping that corrupt, lying, incompetent piece of trash Hillary out.
