If she wouldn’t believe her racist stereotypes she wouldn’t be so confused… and stupid.

She actually believes that blacks (& other minorities) can only think one way: her way.

I still remember the night I met Ms Washington at a Lincoln Dinner. She was easy to spot since she was one of the few black ladies to attend. I had just returned from Iraq was trying to understand the political climate in El Paso County, CO. I am generally a no nonsense get to the point person. After a few introductory conversations, I just said, “You do know that I am wondering why you are here tonight.” She laughed and told me that I was the first person who had the courage to ask her that question.
She was a lady in her 50s, well dressed and obviously highly intelligent. She told me that she mostly related with the Republican party platform. Her whole family had voted Democrat for generations. She had gone to college and had traveled some around the country. She saw none of the things promised by the Democrats for black people. Yet her family religiously voted for Democrats.
She was a smart lady who learned early in her life to follow the Reagan premise to trust but verify. Her family had trusted all of their lives. When she explored other neighborhoods, she found that they struggled as much as the place where she grew up. Basically, she had verified that no one was helping other black people. They talked a lot about what they were going to do, but never seemed to get to fulfilling their promises. She moved right, but still reserved final judgement.
We still see each other once or twice a year at one of these Lincoln functions. She is not totally convinced that the Republicans keep all of their promises, but they are doing much better than the Democrats. We treat here as an equal, not a minority. She has real issues she wants to resolve. Some have been accomplished. Some can not be resolved at the state level. Some must be accomplished at the national level by law makers. She is not happy that law makers on both sides are more concerned with their political status to the extent neither party will vote for a good bill proposed by the other party.
