Harry Reid And The Romney Tax Slander

John Hayward @ Human Events:

In an interview with the Huffington Post published on Tuesday, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid claimed that an anonymous Bain Capital investor called his office and said of presidential candidate Mitt Romney, “Harry, he didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years!”

Reid described himself as mildly skeptical of this remarkable claim.  “Now, do I know that that’s true?  Well, I’m not certain.  But obviously he can’t release those tax returns.  How would it look?  You guys have said his wealth is $250 million.  Not a chance in the world.  It’s a lot more than that.  I mean, you do pretty well if you don’t pay taxes for 10 years when you’re making millions and millions of dollars.”

Well, he’s got a point there.  Just ask Treasury Secretary Tim “Turbo Tax” Geithner, or any of the other three dozen tax cheats working for the Obama Administration.  Or maybe one of the tax cheats who scooped up $1.4 billion in mortgage loans backed by the Obama “stimulus.”  Or perhaps one of the tax cheats who raked in $24 billion in “stimulus” loot while owing a total of $757 million back taxes.

As the Washington Times reported in May 2011, “One construction company that won multiple awards of money under President Obama’s 2009 stimulus program was delinquent on its federal tax bill to the tune of $700,000, even as a company executive was blowing hundreds of thousands of dollars at casinos.”  That guy obviously knows all about living the high life while dodging taxes.  Maybe he could discuss it with Harry Reid over a stimulus-funded lunch.

Or maybe Reid should pick up the tab.  He can afford it, having raked in over a million bucks on a shady land deal in 2004, key details of which he concealed from Congress.  “The complex dealings allowed Reid to transfer ownership, legal liability and some tax consequences to [longtime friend and casino lawyer Jay Brown’s] company without public knowledge, but still collect a seven-figure payoff nearly three years later,” an Associated Press report explained in 2006.  Is that what you had in mind when you mentioned “doing pretty well if you don’t pay taxes,” Mr. Reid?

Dan Primack of Fortune lowered the boom on Reid’s effort to slander Romney with weaponized gossip: “One of two things has happened: (1) Reid is simply making the whole thing up, in order to pressure Romney into releasing tax returns for years prior to 2010, or (2) Reid’s investor pal lied, and the Senator didn’t bother to conduct even a mild vetting before sharing the accusation with reporters. Either way, shame on gossipy gentleman from Nevada.”

I know a man who says he heard that Harry Reid had sex with a goat on numerous occasions.
Same thing, Harry.
How do you like it?
Hard to believe the Dems are this desperate.
Hard to believe Harry went to law school, either.

Other Reid quotes:
“You can always tell when it is summertime because you can smell the visitors. The visitors stand out in the high humidity, heat, and they sweat.” (December 2008)

Here’s Harry talking disparagingly about being old and having money (look in the mirror, Harry!)
Reid told The Huffington Post.

“They are going to assemble 17 angry old white men for breakfast, some of them will slobber in their food, some will have scrambled eggs, some will have oatmeal, their teeth are gone. But these 17 angry old white men will say, ‘Hey, we just bought America. Wasn’t so bad. We still have a whole lot of money left.’”

Over the edge and gone.
That’s were Harry Reid is now.

Even for the dingy one this is a new low. So here’s the deal Harry – release a verifiable source for this claim or publically apologize to Mr. Romney and the American public.

What if Mitt has a clean tax return that refutes all the leftist radical baseless accusations? Would a good strategist say release them now or after the wachos make fools of themselves? I am hoping for the September surprise that will once and for all nail the bastards!!

I’m highly skeptical of any claim that Mitt could totally evade federal taxes for 10 years. This, however, seems quite credible:

Study: Romney tax plan helps rich, hurts poor

The study from the Tax Policy Center looks at the impact of Romney’s tax plan, which he promises will be revenue neutral. Romney has vowed to cut tax rates by 20 percent across the board, repeal the estate tax and get rid of taxes in investment income for those making up $200,000. He says the reduction these tax cuts will have on tax revenue will be offset in part by eliminating deductions and loopholes, though he has refused to say what deductions and loopholes he would eliminate.

A cut of 20 percent across the board, and it’s revenue neutral? The guy must be on drugs–possibly he’s been hitting the coffee or something.

Essentially we have a multi-millionaire running for the presidency whose stated intention is to drastically cut taxes for people such as himself, who have been brutalized by punishing rates of . . . oh, 13.9 percent or so.

Since Romney hasn’t held a job in most of the last ten years BUT has seen fit to give very generously to charities of his choice, I can imagine he doesn’t pay too much in taxes.

Even Obama’s meme of taxing the ”rich” is false.
Obama doesn’t want to add taxes to those rich in the way Romney is….you know….lots of money coming in from trusts and such.
Obama really only wants to raise taxes on the high income WORKING people!
You know, firemen, nurses, doctors; folks like them.

Well, if what dingy Harry says is true, then the administration can take Romney out of the race rather quickly by arresting him for tax fraud. Well, maybe it isn’t true or the Chicago thugs would be doing it!

@Greg: Well, from you posts on AGW, we know you are more than a little challenged on the principles of math. Maybe you missed the part where deductions are to be eliminated that currently reduces taxes. Have you caculated how that will effect the tax structure?

@Randy, #7:

Maybe you missed the part where deductions are to be eliminated that currently reduces taxes.

Maybe you missed the fact that Romney has thus far refused to say which deductions and loopholes he would eliminate.

Do you know why republicans are providing no specifics? Because they know if they do, there’s no way in hell that they could win the election.

@Greg:

And how many “specifics” did Obama provide in his 2008 campaign.

@Nan G: Nan, please do not advertize the indiscretions of the goat or the PETA people will be after you!
