Don Hudson:

A citizen with a gun stopped a knife wielding man as he began stabbing people Thursday evening at the downtown Salt Lake City Smith’s store.

Police say the suspect purchased a knife inside the store and then turned it into a weapon. Smith’s employee Dorothy Espinoza says, “He pulled it out and stood outside the Smiths in the foyer. And just started stabbing people and yelling you killed my people. You killed my people.”

Espinoza says, the knife wielding man seriously injured two people. “There is blood all over. One got stabbed in the stomach and got stabbed in the head and held his hands and got stabbed all over the arms.”

Then, before the suspect could find another victim – a citizen with a gun stopped the madness. “A guy pulled gun on him and told him to drop his weapon or he would shoot him. So, he dropped his weapon and the people from Smith’s grabbed him.”

MORE:
A Vietnamese immigrant stabbed two white pedestrians at a Salt Lake City mall, while screaming “you killed my people.”

Kiet Thanh Ly has been arrested for the double stabbing. The two victims are both in critical condition. Police say Ly will be charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Ly has been arrested before. Once for threatening to stab a social worker with a knife.

Ly is being described as a South Vietnamese National. His immigration status is unknown. His motive appears to be anti-American and/or anti-white based on what he screamed during the attacks.

@Nan G, #1:

The Council of Conservative Citizens is a white nationalist, white separatist organization. The “news” story itself is 3 months old.

@Greg:

Irrelevant, Greg.
The story is an example of how easily a bad situation was ended by one law abiding man with a gun.
I chose to cite that source ONLY because they were the single site that named the perp and explained his motives and background.
PC media loves to leave us hanging.

To paraphrase Dem Finstein, Having a gun likely would have made the situation worse.

@Randy, #4:

It probably would have been worse if Kiet Thanh Ly had had one.

greg, anyone who knows how to use a knife is every bit as deadly as a gun wielder if not more so at close range.

Gee.
US involvement in the Vietnam war ended in 1975.
This guy is 34 now.
So, he was born in 1977 or 1978.
AFTER we had left.
The vast majority of deaths ( 2 to 3 million in the South) happened after we left and were from the new dictators from the North and from the failed boat people evacuations that killed at least 500,000.
In fact the only deaths that he could have personally experienced happened after we left and were done by the new dictator from the North!
So, maybe he’s just crazy.

@Hard Right:

It’s somewhat harder to randomly drop half a dozen people standing 10 feet away, however.

@Greg:
And if one of them has a gun… See how this works?
Someone carrying a gun stopped a crime.
Statists like yourself only pretend to want freedom. You’ve shown your marxist colors time after time.

@Hard Right: Curt could probably elaborate on this better, but here is how police perceive a knife threat. A while back, a law enforcement academy (the particular one escapes me, it may been the FBI Academy) did an experiment using the 21 foot rule. In over 90% of the cases, the person with the knife beat the officer with a holstered gun. Having taught martial arts for almost 30 years, at close quarters I would feel more comfortable trying to disarm someone with a gun than a knife. Of course the best thing to do is to hand over the wallet. Money is not worth dying for.

@another vet:
Totally agree.

@Nan G: The old saying about bringing a knife to a gun fight doesn’t always apply, especially if the knife wielder knows what he/she is doing.

WHO STARTED THIS?
IF THEY BRING A KNIFE BRING A GUN, WELL IT WAS SAID,
IT ENCOURAGE THE SICKOS, SO IF THERE WOULD HAVE BEEN ONE SHARP SHOOTER IN COLORADO,
THAT RED HAIR JOKER WOULD NOT EXIST, AND MANY LIVES WOULD HAVE BEEN SAVE, THERE WAS MILITARYS IN THERE CAN YOU BELIEVE HOW THEY FEEL TO HAVE OBEY THE LAW OF THE
A MOVIE THEATRE, WHERE SO MANY PEOPLE GATHERED TO FOCUS ONLY AT A SCREEN,
WHO’S WATCHING IN THERE, SPECIALLY WITH CHILDREN

A citizen with a gun stopped the madness seems to be a less frequently heard story than a citizen with a gun went mad.

@Greg:
Media coverage bias, Greg.
That’s all it is.

@Greg: Nan is right. There are numerous incidents where a law abiding citizen who is armed stops a crime but it never gets reported either because of bias or there isn’t as much “news” to it unless someone gets killed. I actually think a lot of the news media are a bunch of sick bastards who would prefer to see a high body count because it makes for more dramatic news and that applies to accidents, fires, train wrecks, and plane crashes as well. As for the rare mass shootings, a nutcase is a nutcase. If they are bent on killing a large number of people, they will find a way. How many guns did the 9/11 hijackers or Timothy McVeigh have? Someone once told me, if a nutcase decided to go out and kill a bunch of people, he’d rather have him use a gun than a bomb because he would be easier to stop.

I was going to say, the one who save a bad situation more than often vanish after in a crowd,
they are the heros un-name they don’t want the praise of the publicity, they know it is viciously trying to make a positive action in a negative, they will be insulted by some because they use their weapon,
so you don’t hear from them.

@ilovebeeswarzone: Unfortunately the way our self righteous society has become, a person has to think twice about getting involved. Instead of doing the right thing, people who would get involved have to worry about lawyers trying to sue them and media hacks trying to portray them as vigilantes or right wing extremists. Even police officers are now put in a situation where they have to consider what they are doing to the point where that little bit of hesitation may very well cost them their lives. On one hand you don’t want a situation where people just go around and take the law into their own hands because that would result in anarchy. On the other hand you don’t want a situation where people are too timid to stand up for what is right because wrong/evil prevails when good people do nothing. We seem to be drifting toward the latter.

@another vet:

Thank you for pointing that out. Many people have the misconception that a gun is the be-all, end-all weapon.
Within it’s range a knife is every bit as deadly if not more so than a gun. It does not run out of “ammo” and a handgun (to my knowledge), has never been used to decapitate or disembowel someone. Knifes have.

And greg, the media is much more likely to report a murder with a firearm than the prevention of a murder with one. It’s all about their mission to teach the “ignorant” how they should think. I know you know that tho, and are just pushing propaganda as usual.

@Nan G:

So, maybe he’s just crazy.

Or brainwashed by the Howard Zinn-Noam Chomsky-Ward Churchill brand of (anti-)American History schooling/liberal indoctrination.

@Greg:

It’s somewhat harder to randomly drop half a dozen people standing 10 feet away, however.

and

@another vet:

did an experiment using the 21 foot rule.

Touched upon here.

Never underestimate the blade in close-quarters.

@Hard Right: It’s also harder to detect someone with a knife. They can pull it at the very last minute to employ it whereas a firearm is usually pulled ahead of time in order to employ it. There was a training show where a Marine skilled in MMA went up against someone else. The MMA got his submission hold and everything so he thought he won the “fight” until afterwards he found out that during the match his opponent pulled a rubber knife and stabbed him multiple times.

@Wordsmith: Good memory. I remember reading the post. The moral of the story is if someone pulls a knife and you have a gun, shoot. Better tried by 12 than carried by 6 as they say.
