Today I caught up with Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal in West Des Moines, IA. The governor, who has just begun his second term in Baton Rouge, is in Iowa today as one of Gov. Rick Perry’s advocates. Jindal notes that while the United States under President Obama has lost millions of jobs, Texas under Rick Perry continues to buck the trend and add jobs.
Gov. Jindal endorsed Gov. Perry’s presidential run back in September 2011, a sign of the close relationship that the two governors and the two states share.
Yes, of course Perry is “conservative.” I mean he’s for free-trade and letting the illegals run all over the US.
Jindal was actually the first guy in line to become the GOP’s answer to Obama, as I recall.
The long snipe hunt goes on . . .
@Greg, could it be you just use animated cartoon movies as your dictionary? Or are you, for some unknown and unjustified reason, calling Jindal “contemptible”?
Words really do mean something. If nothing else than to show the audience the sheer ignorance of the orator.
An analysis from Tad DeHaven at the Cato Institute, based on the info available on Perry’s website:
@MataHarley, #3:
A “snipe hunt” refers to a search for an imaginary quarry–in this case, a republican presidential candidate who will satisfy not only a majority of republican voters, but a majority of all voters as well. Maybe you had to have been a Cub Scout or Boy Scout to know about the illusive snipe. It wasn’t a slam directed at Bobby Jindal.
Oh for heavens sake, Greg… stop watching the truly wonderful movie, “Up”, and start getting into real English language and definitions.
Snipe is either a bird, or a contemptible person. Any “hunt” is intelligence fostered by Hollywood, or appeals to a perceived “Ozark” inbred mentality.. which is insulting in itself.
That Ron Paul certainly is attractive for a 76 year old man. I could just kiss him!
@MataHarley:
The phrase refers to something that was minor part of my own fairly typical 1950s Midwestern boyhood, but it’s not worth arguing the point.
Greg, I understand the intended phrase. I also find it somewhat disconcerting that such a negative phrase has become acceptable. It it, in it’s origins, extremely demeaning. Perhaps you didn’t know that, but maybe you should look it up for future reference.
A “snipe hunt” is a wild goose chase,a fools errand,an attempt to accomplish an impossible task which did begin with Jindal and is curently focused on Santorum,
Get some sleep Mata
Fer heavens sake, rich, if you’re going depend on Wiki for your cut/paste definitions, it may behoove you to consider how that goose hunt origin is characterized.
The use of “snipe” as a term for someone is derogatory. As a child of the PC generation, and hypersensitive to that politically correct nuance, there is no excuse for you not knowing that using “snipe” or “snipe hunt” is extremely derogatory it it’s use.
I expect better of you. If not knowing, at least in minimal research.
Why do I get the feeling that I may have just been sent off on a mission that’s an example of the very thing under discussion?
I give you neither credits, nor demerits for your useage, Greg. Frankly, I gave you credit for not knowing the derogatory reference you used simply because it’s a commmon mistake.
Now, is a “snipe hunt”… in the most true meaning, a “fool’s hunt”? Perhaps, in varying degrees, in this line up… yes and no. But then, as a Democrat voter for both primary, and general election, just what business is that of yours?
@ MataHarley:
Crapola, I had no idea. I remember being 7 or 8 years old standing at the end of the street with a pillow case while my little brother was at the other end of the street with a stick hitting bushes; both of us yelling, “here snipe, snipe, snipe.” Our grandfather told us if we caught one we could get a lot of money for it and they only came out at dusk.
I like Perry. Unfortunately it looks like he is re-examining his campaign after Iowa. I hope he sticks it out in SC.
People don’t publicly ‘re-examine’ their campaigns and then come back and say ‘after consideration… yeah, let’s go on!’ (unless they don’t know how to play the game… like Perot). Doing so casts a shadow of doubt that you really don’t want. Doing it this way is just a polite way of giving your supporters a little time to get used to the idea of you dropping out.
I was surprised Perry got no traction with his later efforts in Iowa, but given that he didn’t it probably makes sense for him to quit. He lost the fight for the social conservatives to Santorum and I don’t think he has the resources left to try to wrest enough other conservatives away from Gingrich down South. Which overall is good news for Gingrich, I’d say.
@ bbartlog:
I’m just trying to hide from reality. I’m with Ace on this, I’m completely bummed out about the whole thing. Santorum? Really? We have a metro sexual in the White House now, we don’t need another one. Perry is another Reagan with one exception; he has the Reagan swagger, he’s personable, but he just lacked the Gipper’s communications skillz.
Aqua Exactly a “snipe hunt” is not derogatory but is merely a fools errand.
Just got a Gipper like request for money from Santorum.He’s quick.
Yeah!!
@GovernorPerry And the next leg of the marathon is the Palmetto State…Here we come South Carolina!!!

Staying in, is he? Well, at least he didn’t leave people in doubt for more than a few hours. Good for him.
