Floor Drama: Boehner Embarrassment As House Nearly Kills Omnibus On Procedural Vote

Matthew Boyle:

The final vote on Speaker John Boehner’s 1,603-page, more than $1 trillion omnibus spending bill is in jeopardy after members almost killed the bill on the rule. A total of 214 members voted for it, less than the majority of members in the House, but since all members weren’t voting, the 212 against the rule wasn’t enough to kill it.

Time for voting had run out minutes before, and briefly the nays—those against the rule—had the majority. At least one Republican had switched a vote from being against the rule to for it, at which time the presiding officer used procedural chicanery to quickly call the vote passed.

Republican Reps. Justin Amash (R-MI), Michele Bachmann (R-MN), Dave Brat (R-VA), Mo Brooks (R-AL), Paul Broun (R-GA), Louie Gohmert (R-TX), Paul Gosar (R-AZ), Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), Walter Jones (R-NC), Jim Jordan (R-OH), Steve King (R-IA), Raul Labrador (R-ID), Tom Massie (R-KY), Bill Posey (R-FL), Matt Salmon (R-AZ) and Steve Stockman (R-TX) held the line and voted no. Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R-MI) switched his vote from nay to yay at the last minute.

If the numbers that are being reported—50 to 60, maybe more—of Republicans hold on against the final passage of the bill later in the day, and all the Democrats who opposed the rule oppose the bill, the bill would fail on final passage. It remains to be seen what will happen.

Late last evening, the 1600+ page CR-Omnibus bill was filed and as expected it funds the President’s executive amnesty through the end of February 2015. This is our last chance to stop this bad bill!

Call the list of Representatives below and tell them the following 3 things:
Stop playing games
Find some courage and stand up to the President’s abuse of power
DO NOT fund executive amnesty
Our calls on Monday and Tuesday have made a difference because the bill was initially stalled. Now we have to show them that we are still paying attention!

The CR-Omnibus bill falls terribly short of anything we would want. Do the Republican leaders really think they can temporarily fund the President’s amnesty and get away with it?

Please make as many calls as you can!

There’s an interesting part of this bill that explains precisely what today’s so-called conservatives have become.

You can blame the drivers of Obama’s inherited economic disaster of 2008 however you like but that doesn’t change the reality of it. Preventing it from reoccurring doesn’t rest on some binary or simple solution. But there should be lessons that any reasonable legislators would learn from it’

Regardless, taxpayers did indeed bail the banking industry out (the same industry that now holds $15 trillion of our assets while paying much of their full time workforce unlivable wages which middle class tax payers subsidizes for them and the same industry that has poured tons of cash towards these very same legislator’s election campaigns who now cater to them. But, I digress as those are separate arguments) for their bad decisions. So, there was this Frank Dodd thingy that basically said tax payers wouldn’t have to do that again. Banks can still take risk at their discretion but as the law went, don’t come back to the tax payers cause it ain’t gonna happen. I and many people from both parties thought that was a pretty good law and it even mirrored conservatives claim of “free market” and how business were accountable for their decisions. This should very much delight that “taxed enough already” crowd and those moon howlers of wasteful spending.

But now, Republicans insist that law no longer applies.By what possible logic does that apply to this budget? Why and how was that even negotiated? Where is the outcry from the tea partiers?

Now, understand this—had that not been in this bill, it would not have passed. Republicans would not have signed on and accordingly, the government would have again been shut down with working Americans once again taking the brunt of the pain.

Make no mistake. This is precisely what today’s so-called conservative party is all about. This also sheds light on exactly what the Koch owned tea party is all about.

Seeing such blatant Plutocratic kowtowing to Wall Street this early should be an audible warning of what to expect come January.

What’s in the spending bill? We skim it so you don’t have to

Note what falls under the Campaign Finance header. As if our government wasn’t already sufficiently under the influence of wealthy special interests.

There’s lots to look at:

Dodd-Frank. Hey! Wonderful news for the taxpayers! Investment banks won’t have to offload so much risky derivatives trading into non-FDIC insured corporate entities. Meaning they can gamble more extensively with other people’s money, assured that the taxpayers will bail them out in the event their bets go wrong again. Silly democrats, for ever wanting such restrictions.

Light Bulbs. God forbid anyone be forced to use more energy efficient light bulb replacements. Hey, go ahead and be stupid. I just replaced a 40 watt incandescent with a 7 watt LED that has a 27 year life expectancy. It has no mercury. And btw, there’s more mercury in a can of tuna than in the latest Compact Fluorescent Lights.

Pensions. An interesting new development:

“For the first time, the benefits of current retirees could be severely cut, part of an effort to save some of the nation’s most distressed pension plans. The change would alter 40 years of federal law and could affect millions of workers, many of them part of a shrinking corps of middle-income employees in businesses such as trucking, construction and supermarkets.”

That was in the news a lot, wasn’t it? Hey, it’s a beginning. Once they’ve got their foot in the door, nobody’s pension will be safe. (Except maybe members of Congress.) A new meme: We must severely cut current pension amounts to save pension plans. Promises may have been made while you were working, but were done with you now.

If that sounds like a partisan criticism—well, yeah, it is.
