Public intellectual Cornel West tore into many of this week’s speeches surrounding the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.‘s “I Have a Dream” speech, accusing everyone from President Obama to Rev. Al Sharpton of “sanitizing” Dr. King’s vision.
“Brother Martin himself, I think, would’ve been turning over in his grave,” West said of the event. “[King would have wanted] people to talk about Wall Street criminality, he wants people to talk about war crimes, or drones dropping bombs on innocent people,” he asserted.
“Instead,” he lamented, “we saw the coronation of the bonafide house negro of the Barack Obama plantation, our dear brother Al Sharpton.” West went further declaring that Sharpton’s decline was “supported by [MSNBC analyst] Michael Dyson and others who’ve prostituted themselves in a very ugly and vicious way.”
West and Tavis Smiley both lamented that black leadership has become “so sold-out” so as not to have the courage to be a “bull in the china shop,” break rank, and talk about “racism, poverty, and militarism” at an otherwise “bought-out” event.
MSNBC was between a rock and a hard place.
They were touting their liberal bonafides while being fronted by an awfully pale-faced group of regulars.
So, they did what they could.
They hired a black man, Al Sharpton.
Now they can at least claim to be liberals and not be laughed out of the room for being so white.
Al Sharpton has been a shakedown artist, a con man and a cheat who pretended to be poor just so as to avoid paying court-ordered costs he owes.
Just as a leopard doesn’t change its spots, so, too Al Sharpton will be just what he’s been.
That hasn’t changed because Obama took office and it will continue after Obama leaves.
Amazing. You’re suddenly lending credence to the opinions of an actual socialist. Cornel West serves as honorary chair of the Democratic Socialists of America. These guys actually march around waving red flags. He doesn’t like Obama or Sharpton because they’re not left enough or activist enough.
When the Leftists begin to insult each other and point incriminating fingers with accusations of betraying the Revolution, they know they have passed up the opportunity of the century by electing an incompetent fool. The great hope for Socialism was a hoax, not just to the average American who fell for the propaganda, but for the Socialist who has been praying for the RED Moses to lead them out of the misery of a free capitalist society, too bad their Socialist Messiah was a Crony Capitalist who was content feathering his own nest rather than remaining true to the Revolution. Oh tis the pity, the great reformers of the past meant for the people to suffer, while they lived in opulence; at least, Obama has been true to the roots of Socialism in this regard.

what I notice in their speech was such anger, you felt it from all of them,
no wander they incite their young to violence, with that kind of talk,
if they feel the misery of this time, the WHITES also feel it as bad,
those who step in the podium must know their responsibility is to appease the young in an intelligent way, not to remind them of wrong but of how lucky they are to live in AMERICA, THEY MUST NOT AWAKE THE VIOLENT STREAK HIDDEN WITHIN THE SOUL WHO CRY FOR REVENGE, THIS ENERGY IS DESTRUCTING THEM AND WHO THEY ATTACK,

I agree with some of what everyone says! It is encouraging to look to the left and see discordance but it is important to remember that the enemy of your enemy IS NOT NECESSARILY YOUR FRIEND! Even if he contributes to your enemies downfall, you will then have his undivided attention as he benefits as much as you do from the collapse!

This woman is making a career promoting divisiveness and disharmony based on absurd ideas like “Afrikan-ness” (her spelling) and “what is natural to Afrikan people”. The most Afrikan-ness I see in US negroes is the proliferation of ludicrous pseudo-african native names that so many of them are burdened with. Most American negroes have more similar inclinations and are MUCH closer to yuppie wall street currency traders than african natives.
@Nan G: The young are products of the indoctrination mills of our public education. They are without critical thinking processes, to them the revolution is glorious and they are a part of it and along for the ride. It’s the leaders I refer to, they aren’t jaded fools, they know when a great opportunity has been wasted on an incompetent fool, and they are beginning to get angry.
Incidentally, Dr Ani has a curious name normally associated to a bird in the Cuckoo family.
An Ani is a somewhat common black bird in the SE US–usually solo or loose groups but frequently found on the fringes of flocks of more common blackbirds like grackles and red-winged blackbirds. Crotophaga (species name) is apparently latin for “tick eater” due to their habit of following large animals and gleaning insects disturbed by the passage of the grazing herd. They apparently do not pick through the feces of the herd for undigested seed like the blackbirds but seek insects only.
Wikipedia has this to say about it–
“The anis are the three species of near-passerine birds in the genus Crotophaga of the cuckoo family.”

** Cuckoos (but possibly NOT anis) have the rep of surreptitiously laying eggs in other nests of other bird species which then raise the young as their own while the Cuckoo avoids the labor of parenthood. @Greg: @Skookum: Went to a lecture that Dr. West gave at my college years ago. While I liked the guy, he basically said that since he subconsciously thought whites were superior, all whites subconsciously thought they were superior too. They could not claim “I’m not racist,” and we needed to assume that all whites are racist by default . . . because all blacks are racist against themselves.
I’m not kidding. The students chuckled and nodded their heads. I walked out.
While I’m not truly agreeing with Greg on this one, Cornell West isn’t necessarily the guy you want on your side. The point of the article is to show just how much of a phoney Obama is — he’s more extreme than Bush on many things that he whipped up anger on in order to get elected: when people finally look at his actions vs. his promises, they see what his presidency is — a total sham.
But if Sharpton is the bizarro, false image of JFK, then Cornell West is the bizarro, false image of Malcolm X.
Still funny to finally see those you’d assume are the Obama loyal pointing out he’s counterfeit, which was the real point of the article.
