American Muslims: Identity 10 yrs after 9/11

Hungry to be just one of the guys after immigrating to Texas, Palestinian Fawaz Ismail asked everybody to call him “Tony.” The nickname put people at ease at his Dallas high school, where Tony switched from soccer to football and picked up a bit of a Texas twang.

He remained Tony when he moved to Northern Virginia to expand his family’s flag-selling business. The name made him feel as American as his Falls Church store, Alamo Flag, a patriot’s paradise brimming with Stars and Stripes banners, pins and stickers.

Then came the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the day Tony became a foreigner again. That afternoon, people started pouring into Alamo Flag, many wearing sunglasses to hide their crying eyes. Ismail sold thousands of American flags in those days of fear and unity, and he gave away thousands more.

But soon after the twin towers fell and the Pentagon burned, Ismail felt his adopted homeland pushing him away. He decided to push back. He sent Tony into permanent exile, taking back his given name. Now, a decade later, his name is a daily message to his fellow Americans: They must deal with him for who he is — a Muslim who loves his country and proudly sells its banner.

“A lot of people use a nickname to make it easier for Americans to pronounce,” he says, “but now, I don’t care. They’re going to have to pronounce my name. It’s not that hard — Fah-wahz.”

There was pride in that decision but also a real and still-growing anger — at Americans who assume that anything Islamic is shorthand for terrorism; at the older generation of American Muslims, whose immigrant, old-world version of Islam paints them as rigid and intolerant; and at people who accept him if he’s Tony but recoil at a name such as Fawaz.

“It’s hard hearing your faith put down all the time as this scary, evil thing,” he says. And hard to endure the cloud of suspicion that American Muslims feel has grown rather than dissipated over the past decade.

Like most American Muslims, Ismail, who is a buff and hale 50, is not particularly religious. He likes to listen to tapes of Koranic chants at night to relax. But in the past few years, he has struggled with the reality that some Americans take one look at him and think, “Hmm, is he really one of us?”

“I pay my taxes. I love this country. You want to talk about patriotic? I am the definition,” says Ismail, who became an American citizen as a teenager. “I sell the best flags, made in the United States, not in China like a lot of stores sell. I’m all about moderation — man, I like Fleetwood Mac.”

~~~
The blame for Americans’ suspicion toward Muslims, Moiz argues, lies mostly with his fellow Muslims, especially those who refuse to adapt to the culture of their new home.
~~~

He left that job believing that too many of his fellow Muslims — such as the worker who complained that his employer wouldn’t give him Fridays off to pray, when he really needed only an hour — are too quick to take on the victim label.

I appreciate Fawaz (Tony) Ismail’s predicament.
It is difficult to be looked upon as one person and not a part of your ethnic group for EVERYONE.
When I was in public school I learned all of the nasty ways white kids could label me for my Jewish blood.
Hubby got all levels of grief over his partial black background….sometimes still does.
So I understand.

Most of what some Muslims do in the USA goes under the radar.
They have a slightly higher -than-average annual income than average America.
They have a slightly higher level of education also.
And they own a greater % of businesses than average Americans ….by a larger proportion.

But, supposedly, all that gets overlooked when one Muslim:
From Ohio gets caught aiding jihad in Somalia. (June 9th)
From Chicago gets convicted of aiding the Bombay terrorist attack (June 9th)
From Allentown, PA sues her boss over being given a legally required lunch break during Ramadan (June 9th)
From Wichita, KS, runs over a man w/his cab then drives 3 miles w/ the dead body on the cab (June 11th)*

When you don’t make yourself part of the victim-issue you are already part of the solution.

Fawaz (Tony) Ismail needs to grow a thicker skin.
HE is not doing any of those things.
Just as I’m not doing any of the things people accuse Jews of doing (running the world, owning everything, etc.)
Just as Hubby’s not doing any of the things blacks do (killing each other, dog fighting, rampaging on buses and subways, rioting, wearing his pants on the ground).
Tony needs to get on with his life minus the victim card.
He sounds like a nice guy.

*Is there a ”taxi jihad?
New York City cabdriver Mohammed Azam ran over two of his passengers for no apparent reason.

Another cabbie, Hassan Daly, who was described as a “devout Muslim,” plowed his cab into a crowd on a sidewalk in San Diego, injuring over 24 people.

Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar explicitly grounded his hit-and-run in the teachings of the Koran.

Munir Muthana told the police who arrested him that “the Muslims will fix this country.”

Omeed Aziz Popal was supposedly suffering from stress from an arranged marriage.

Ismail Yassin Mohamed was mentally ill, suffered from depression, and hadn’t being taking his medication.

Muhammad Teshale, according to “law enforcement officials,” “did it to be famous.”

Now this one, Mohamed Sarrafizadeh, this last week.

Well Tony, maybe you can convice your fellow travelers in your religion to helpt the FBI…nah. Ain’t gonna happen

Wordsmith I appreciate your article, but the hatred for Islamism is not unfounded. I feel for those that are true Muslims and are caught up in the whirlwind of labeling! Do you know what the word “Muslim” means? It means one who believes and follows the way of One God. Americans are very uneducated concerning the matter of who is who in Islam! Shiites do not go to the Mizgad for prayer, but rather for brainwashing ! while the Sunni’s and several others do study the Koran and prayer. Shameful enough the later is not the type of Islam favored by our Administration! The Clinton Administration was the biggest contributor to populating America with prospective Terrorist which lead to the 9/11 attack. They also helped the Shiite type of Islamics to take control of Islamic education here in the States. Islam is a very different world of mentalities that is a study to itself! How ever “true Muslims” are very warm and intelligent people! I have many who are my friends and business associates. However we should be clear to understand that the groups like she groups like the Obama and Clinton administration loves to entertain and recruit are not even considered as true Muslims by the older factions of Islam. The Shiites, and their off springs along with the Palestinians, Fatah , Hamas, and Hezballah are not Fundamentalist but rather fanatical fatalist! (you know the ones our government supports)
I as a Jew understand the faces of hatred and prejudice, although the hatred of some Muslims is understandable as well as it is not always justified! It is always best to be able to understand who you are talking to before you draw lines! If we could ever get Liberals to apply that concept to their thinking and rational they would self terminate in a short time! The Hallmark of a Liberal (socialist /communist) is to label and separate without ever understanding who or what the person is!

WHY DID TONY became ISMAEL after 9/11,?
IT SOUNDS LIKE HE WAS PROUD TO BE ISMAEL AFTER 9/11,
AND START HIS MENTAL COMBATIVE QUARREL TO BE ACCEPTED
ONLY AFTER 9/11; it must have triggered the same defensive mental thoughts as the other who learn his mission to go in AGHANISTAN TO KILL THE ONE HE STILL TOOK AS BROTHERS,
THAT LED HIM TO COMMIT MURDER AND TREASON ON HIS LONG TIME COMPANIONS OF ARMS AND HIS NATION. WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO CHEER FOR 9/11 MASSACRE, THEY WILL ALWAYS BE TRIGGER BY HAVING TO CHOOSE BETWEEN THEIR COUNTRY AND THEIR BROTHER MUSLIMS,
THEY ARE LOADED GUN, UNTIL THEY PROVE OTHERWISE,

Fawaz’s choice to return to his original name reminds me of another who did the same — Barry Soetoro.

I wonder — what were Barry’s underlying reasons for returning to Barack Hussein Obama?

Theodore Roosevelt famously stated that he welcomed immigrants who wished to assimilate into America, but he did not welcome people who wanted to live in America within ethnic enclaves and retain their pre-immigration nationality.

It’s human nature to resent closed communities of people. One reason why Jews continue to be resented (and this is the observation of a half-Jew) is that Judaism is more of a closed tribal community than it is a religion. Increasing the resentment is the disproportional material success and power/influence held by this community. We are beginning to see some of the same resentment directed against Asians.

Mexicans are resented not simply because of their numbers, but because of an insistence on maintaining both language and culture.

Europeans generally tried to assimilate completely by the 2nd generation, but successive waves of immigrants from different countries still encountered problems. It’s unrealistic to expect people not to stereotype Muslims, given not only 9/11 but also the terrorist methods of Jihad (suicide bombing of innocents, etc.). Many people feel that the general Muslim community was strangely quiet, concerning paucity of condemnation of terrorism and lack of efforts originating within the Muslim community to reduce terrorism. Why don’t American Muslims build schools in Pakistan to educate girls, for example? This creates the impression of silent approval, whether accurate or not.

I think that both Jews and Muslims have self-inflicted public relations problems. Jews could “open up” their community and be enthusiastic about inviting gentiles to become Jews, as opposed to viewing this as anathema. It’s human nature to resent closed societies. Were Judaism merely a religion, and not a tribe, and if Judaism were to grow to include millions who were not born Jewish but who became Jewish, in the same way that Christianity welcomes new members to its community, the centuries- old Jewish “troubles” would be over in a single generation. If Muslims took responsibility for improving their public relations problem, rather than just quietly grumping about it, this problem would lessen, as well.

@openid.aol.com/runnswim: Lay off all the bullshit and quit taking Zanex! This is the biggest crock of philosophical bullshit I have ever heard! You really need to come back to earth and get back in touch with reality! Okay BSer! Where do these tribes live? You probably could not say one prayer correctly in Hebrew nor quote a single verse from the Koran in Arabic correctly either! Jews financed the Revolutionary war! Jews were in every part of American history! You are a traitor to your own name! Our veterans have been decorated openly in every war this nation has fought! How deep did you need to dig in the manure pile of the liberals to come up with this crap? Such BS! Do you have any idea where the largest Jewish military cemetery is outside of Israel is? I am sure you do not! It is in Richmond Virginia ! And they are Confederates on top of it all! You know nothing of Jews in the United States or our place in this great nation!….. Go play with Nancy Pelosi! It is people such as yourself that the nations despise… the Muslims only tolerate your kind, and everyone else uses you, The Jew who talks for everything and stands for Nothing is the father of Hitler and the mother of Carl Marx the philosopher, the genetic Jew! Yes you want to save the world and send yourself and all your cronies to hell in the meanwhile!
I am a fifth generation Virginian Jew! How dare you compare me and other jews who have served this nation to an Mexican who creeped across the border or an Islamic who who came her to perform evil task against this country! My family has served in every war that the United States fought for over an 160 years! We shed our blood along side everyone else in this nation! We went to Europe to liberate your kind that brought the multitudes to the slaughter houses of Hitler that your kind and your philosophy produced!
There have been Jews who misguided like you and have betrayed this nation! However there have been a thousands of times over those who served this nation with honor! So Jews carry out terrorist attacks on US soil? Jews as a people perpetuate this largest drug cartel in history? Jews Plant bombs to kill innocent people? You sick bastard! How dare you compare us to those who create many of the problems of our society! I am an Israeli and an American and I am proud to be both as a Jew and a Southerner! Don’t tread on me!!! I will take your kind Alligator hunting and guess who will be the bait…You are a danger to anything good in society and a poison to your own people!
Just for your information and corruption of history… Theodore Roosevelt served with Jews(but not the likes of you) and even had Jews in his advisory and cabinet! As well Franklin D. Roosevelt the same! General Robert E. Lee even made an general order that Jews serving in the Confederacy should be afforded the right to the Sabbath observance at every possible opportunity!

@Wordsmith: Wordsmith Truth is truth but understand ” Sunni-brand of wahhabism” is not recognized by the mainstream of the Sunni’s! It is caused by the infiltration of the Shias into that part of the world! Have you ever been there or are you basing this on the MSM biased media and the statements of the Liberal State Department run by Jihadist Hillary? If you receive such Statements you would have to conclude every Black is a civil rights activist! In fact if you knew Islamic history you would know that they even thought to disregard the Shias as Islamic but decided to keep them in believing they could redeem them…big mistake because wahhabism and Shiites are based in hatred!

Wordsmith, I was making a comment about the timing of his choice to
change his name back to a muslim obvious name,
you picked on me because, you rejected the comment, and accuse of
Nan and I being ISLAMOPHOBE, but what we both perceive is very obvious, and carry It’s weight;
NUMBER 1: THE TIMING HE PICK!!! NUMBER 2: THE BEGINNING OF HIS COMBATING BEHAVIOR,
USING HIS NAME TO DEMAND RECOGNITION OF BEING MUSLIM!!! NUMBER 3 : THE NEED TO DEFEND HIS NEW ATTITUDE AND HIS NEW NAME.
ISLAMOPHOBE DIDN’T WE READ THAT BEFORE ON ANOTHER POST.

@JV Hoffman (#7)

Dear Mr. Hoffman,

I am sorry that I offended you. I fear that you did not understand the points that I was trying to make. On this particular thread, someone made the point that average Muslims felt hostility and resentment. Someone else made the point that Jews also feel resentment. To wit:

“When I was in public school I learned all of the nasty ways white kids could label me for my Jewish blood” (comment #1)

.

It was in the context of the thread about Muslims that the comparison with Jews was being made. I will argue that the degree of current resentment towards Jews in current day America is a fraction of what it was in the 1920s and 1930s, when my father was growing up and even much smaller than it was in the 1950s and 1960s, when I was growing up. But it still does exist, at least in the minds of Jews, such as the commenter on the current Flopping Aces thread who raised the issue, again in the context of a discussion about resentment directed against Muslims.

In my reply, I pointed out the reasons for these accurate observations (i.e. that Muslims are greatly resented and Jews are still somewhat resented). The reasons are very different, as I tried to explain. If you agree that some resentment does exist, then I’d like to hear your explanation of why you feel that this resentment exists. I happen to think that it has virtually nothing to do with so-called “Christ killing,” as I’ll expand upon, further. Let a true anti-Semite offer his explanation (albeit in a satirical fashion):

Mel Gibson’s address to the General Assembly (of Hollywood Jews)

http://www.jewishjournal.com/home/preview.php?id=16785

Quote (by Mel Gibson):

I would like to close my address by apologizing once more for my recent behavior. I have reached out to as many Jews in Hollywood as I can: Alan Horn, Joe Roth, Steven Spielberg, Brad Grey, Stacey Snider, Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen, Joel Silver, Ron Meyer, Amy Pascal, Tom Rothman, Gail Berman … Jesus Christ, you Jews really do run Hollywood!

You went to some pains to describe your family background. Let me tell you a little about mine. I’m 1/2 “pure blooded” Jew and 1/2 “pure blooded” Finn (i.e. where a “Finn” is someone from Finland). This has given me the opportunity to compare what it means to be Jewish, on one hand, and Finnish, on the other hand. This is of central relevance to the points I shall make. I’m equally proud of both “halves,” by the way.

First, let me tell you a little more about my Jewish half. My father’s name is Gary Weisenthal. He’s 97 years old and still very active. Among a great many other things, he holds the world record for the 200 meter (long course) backstroke in the age 95-99 division of world masters swimming. Here’s a two minute video I shot of him, just one month ago:

Here’s a photo of him and me, when I was 11 (taken at one of those 4 pictures for $1 photo booths, at the Edgewater Amusement park in Detroit:

Here’s a photo of my Dad, with his Israeli Army official discharge papers, just upon his return from his service in Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Other American Jews donated money. He gave of himself. He was 60 years old at the time.

Here’s another photo I took at the same time, depicting a map of the region and also several Israeli soldier death announcements (the signs in Hebrew) which were posted in public places during the war, to announce the deaths.

Here’s a cartoon/caricature which was part of a large poster, which was a collage of some of the events in my father’s life, which was presented to him by a group of co-workers and friends, at his retirement party from his job as a heavy truck design engineer for the Ford Motor Company. During WWII, he designed tanks for Chrysler (an important defense contractor later rescued by Presidents Bush and Obama), prior to his enlistment in the US Navy. The poster is a caricature of his mission during the Yom Kippur War, which was to drive a heavy truck, delivering supplies and equipment, all over Israel.

Here’s a photo of my Dad and I, taken in September, 2009, on an English Channel ferry, returning us to Dover, following a visit to Dunkirk. This was part of a trip where we had the happiness to support my daughter (his granddaughter) when she swam across the English Channel in the 31st fastest time in history, men and women, out of the nearly 1500 people who’ve successfully completed the swim.

Here’s the cover of a book, given to me (and written by) my cousin, the late Simon Wiesenthal, also know as the “Nazi Hunter” who tracked and located Adolph Eichmann and Klaus Barbee.

His life was chronicled in the film: Murderers Among Us (starring Ben Kingley) and the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles is named in his honor. Here’s a description of the book.

Here’s a handwritten inscription, written by Simon Wiesenthal and addressed personally to me, in an inside cover page of the book. I didn’t ask for this. The book and inscription arrived, unexpectedly, in the mail (sent by him from Vienna), a couple weeks after I’d spoken to him on the telephone (I never met him in person).

Now, I won’t go into this type of detail regarding regarding my “other half” (the Finnish half), but I would like to make the following observations:

First, anti-Semitism, in modern day America, exists at very low levels. I can tell you this for a fact, because I am 64 years old, have a Jewish name, and virtually everyone to whom I am introduced thinks that I’m Jewish. I have been asked more times than I can possibly recall, “are you related to Simon Wiesenthal” or “are you related to the Nazi hunter?” Most people, in fact, misspell my name in letters and emails, calling me “Larry Wiesenthal.” I don’t bother to “correct” them. It’s actually an advantage, in my occupation. Jewish doctors have a well deserved reputation for competence and having people consider me Jewish actually gives me a leg up. But I have obviously come into contact will all manner of people in my life. They think I’m Jewish, but I’ve never encountered any problems at all.

In the whole of my life, I’ve had precisely 2 (two) anti-Semitic episodes, directed at me. Some years back, I received a hand written piece of “hate mail.” It was upsetting, but it was once in my life and nothing ever happened. On one other occasion, about 10 years ago, I got a phone call at 2 AM from a couple of drunks who tried to get my dander up by making anti-Jewish remarks. I just let them talk, not saying a word. After awhile they actually panicked. One of them said “he’s probably having the call traced.” They immediately hung up.

After 63 1/2 years. that’s it, for me, anti-Semitism-wise. I don’t challenge other (“full-blooded”) Jews, who claim that virulent anti-Semitism still does exist, to some degree, as expressed in comment #1.

What is the real cause of anti-Semitism? Well, some of it is the old “Christ killer” stuff, but that’s not the big issue.

I’ve written about this before, on other blogs. I would like to write plainly to you, and not have to be constrained by being politically correct. Basically, Jews want to have their cake and eat it too. They want to be a closed, tribal society; they want success, in all of its manifestations, and they are spectacularly good at achieving this success. And they never want human nature to intrude on them — in the form of frank resentment.

I’m half Finnish-Protestant and half Jewish. What’s the difference? Firstly, religion wise, ANYONE can be a Protestant. Protestants welcome newcomers to their midst with open arms. They have outreach programs to invite outsiders to join their communities. There are no hoops to jump through, even. Just join a church and you are immediately welcomed as a part of the community. You aren’t required to even go to classes or counseling sessions or anything else, if you don’t want to.

That’s the religion part. As far as the Finnish part, it’s just a past heritage of which to be proud. I’m proud that Finland was the only country to pay off its WWI debts to the USA. I’m proud of the fact that Newsweek Magazine recently selected Finland as “the best nation in the world.” I’m proud that the Finnish educational system is being held up as a model for the USA. I’m proud that the Finns bravely fought the Russians. And so on. But it doesn’t define who I am. Finnish mothers don’t expect (much less demand) their children to marry other Finns. Half-Finns like me have the same “standing” as full blooded Finns. It’s just a very small piece of cultural heritage and no one is trying to “preserve” a closed tribe of Finns within the USA.

In the case of Jews, it’s totally different. I can’t think of a situation which comes close. Jews do not welcome outsiders with open arms. They discourage “converts.” They don’t want “converts.” Converts are never accepted by “true” Jews as being “truly” Jewish. I could emigrate to Finland much easier than I could emigrate to Israel (being paternally half-Jewish, as opposed to maternally half-Jewish). I was once discussing anti-Semitism with one of my “full blooded” Jewish cousins, when, at one point, he stopped and told me, in an exasperated fashion, “you can’t understand, because you are only a half-Jew.” Jewishness isn’t even really a religion. Most American Jews are completely secular, like my father, who, despite taking our family to a Unitarian Church when we were children, answered the call to help defend Israel, in Israel’s time of need. What defines Jewishness is not religion, but it is blood line. Jewishness is about preserving the purity of the blood line. If you are honest with yourself, you’ll acknowledge that this is 100% true. If you doubt it, let me help you find websites where rabbis and other Jews decry the alarming trend of intermarriage, outside of the Jewish community. Finns don’t care if their kids marry non-Finns.

But things are changing. I’d say, for the better. When I was growing up, I didn’t know a single half-Jew, like myself. I still don’t personally know any half-Jews my age, although there are some famous half Jews within a generation of me (such as Michael Douglas, Paul Newman, Geraldo Rivera, Arlo Guthrie, Gwyneth Paltrow, and John McCarthy, inventor of the term “artificial intelligence,” among many others). But today, in the younger generations, it’s totally different. Today, I believe, more than half of all Jews marry non-Jews. The thing about us half-Jews is that we aren’t tribal at all. We can see that we get half our genes from our Moms and half from our Dads and we don’t consider our Dad’s genes to be any more “special” than our Mom’s genes. They are equal. Together, they make us who we are.

And, when we fall in love and marry, we don’t pay any attention at all to whether the girls with whom we fall in love are Jews or Goys. It’s not important to us. What’s important are the intrinsically human qualities of our partners, and not their blood lines.

Older Jews are, frankly, horrified. They are worried that their tribe is going to just die out, through assimilation. American Finns don’t obsess about this. They consider themselves to be Americans, and not Finns. If Jews would just consider themselves to be Americans and not Jews, and freely inter-marry, and “open up” religious Judaism to converts, the way that Christians and Buddhists and Hindus and even Muslims do it, then anti-Semitism would be gone — totally gone — within a generation.

But as long as Jews insist on remaining a distinct, closed tribal society, anti-Semitism will probably continue to exist, in some form or another — albeit virtually at background levels, in modern day America.

Incidentally, I was introduced to the term “the tribe” by a very good Jewish friend. Here’s a definition of the word “tribe:”

A family, race, or series of generations, descending from the same progenitor, and kept distinct, as in the case of the twelve tribes of Israel, descended from the twelve sons of Jacob.

If you disagree with any of the above points and arguments, I’d greatly appreciate it if you’d restrict your comments and/or criticisms to the points themselves, without adding in the personal invective.

openid.aol.com/runnswim,
you cannot compare jews with muslims. the participation of jews is evident,
in all beneficial center of improvement in a peacefull society, they are peacefull and did integrate,
by using the silent way, and you know what I am talking about, that is in science contribution to help not to destroy. even as they where hated by some ignorants with loud mouth and need to pick on the under dog,
that influence other of their followers which had a thrill to hang the blacks they where hunting
at the time, those hunters survived in the democrat party to be elevated as being intelligent enough to become in leadership position until they died, you have seen the terrorist actions on the 9/11, you have seen the one cheering ,gathering on the street, did you ever seen the JEWS in positions of hurting the AMERICA,
but you have heard of their contribution to help AMERICA, many times, they sure not kept to themself in order to give that much to MANKIND.
YOUshould be proud to be one of them, instead of putting the JEWS on the same level of the MUSLIMS,
because if it would be so, you would not be a researcher of cancer today.

@bees: Please see my comment #10. I never equated Judaism with Islam. I was merely responding to the point made by Nan, namely that Jews have been resented, just as Muslims are resented. It was she who compared Judaism, in the context of this thread, with Islam and not I. All I did was to explain that the reasons for resentment directed at Jews, on one hand, and at Muslims, on the other hand, were totally different.

I expanded up this explanation in #10, in response to the invective directed against me in #7.

@openid.aol.com/runnswim:
Larry, I really appreciate your comments.
They were great.

I was only writing anecdotally, referring to the time I spent in an ”all-white” city while I was school age.
Prayer had just been taken out of the public schools when I transferred into this city school.
The word got around that ”I was Jewish.”
Nothing could have been further from the truth, except for blood.
Our family was secular, mom was even agnostic.

But the ”silent treatment” was official policy because I was only a girl and so not to be beat up.
I actually was unaware of how extensive this silent treatment was until we voted (between me and another very popular girl) for valedictorian.
(At the time I was already taking a few classes after school…..over at Ca Tech.)
The vote went as predicted by the two teachers who quit over it, my physics and calculus teachers.
Later a fellow classmate saw me during college days and apologized for taking part in the mass silent treatment.
Up until that time I had never even been inside a synagog!
Didn’t matter to these kids, did it?

I cannot imagine the racism they would have displayed had they had black students to target.
I was just the ”different one.”

It has happened again!
June 13th.

Saddam Hussein Mohsin, 30, has been charged with attempted murder after hitting Detroit Police Officer Charles Armour with his car.

Mohsin was driving the wrong way down a one-way street, when Armour tried to approach his car to let him know he was driving illegally. Mohsin did not stop but ran the officer down….Armour died at the hospital….

Probably just a weird coincidence.

As to ”Tony,” I wonder how ”Tony” would have to adjust his life were he in any Isamist country on earth?
Far better to pretend, as do most of the native Muslims in those lands, pretend to be a Sharia-compliant Muslim than to suffer the consequences of being known to be an apostate, or free-thinking Muslim.
Now, in effect, what is the difference between the Muslim who is pretending under strict Sharia and the rabid true believer?
Tony is free in the USA to be less than strict.
He can choose to put on the sing-song recordings of evening prayer verses – or to skip them tonight.
He can skip going to Mosque.
He can eat pork, drink alcohol, dance with a girlfriend, and so much more….in the USA.
He could do none of these in any Islamist states.

@openid.aol.com/runnswim: Larry let me tell you something…and I am not trying to be ugly or mean! But you have a good heart however sheep have good hearts as well and are eventually eaten! Even though your objectives may be with good intentions and I read them all, where your tree is growing and the fruit it is bearing is not realistic. You have been greatly influenced by the Liberal socialistic educational system even though you have the back ground that you do of your family and all of that is admirable….your conclusions lack a large measure of base in reality!
Your melting pot theory is exactly what drove the Europeans to the hatred of the Jew in Germany! Because they were too much like the Europeans and had the taken the European culture upon them the German people become to despise them!!!! An Obvious study of history shows this factor….Let me ask you how many years did Jews live in Europe as Jews until the Holocaust? and How many years did Jews intermingle into the culture of “the Berliners”? Jews lived in the Germanic States for over 400 years, but when the last two generations intermingled with Aryan race and took on their culture…what happened?
Just like today in Israel the Muslims have no problem with Jews who live as Jews (Chasiddic) Datim and not Zionistic observant of which they have many problems with!
You are so unrealistic it is beyond upsetting! Let me ask you some questions!
Have you had to pick out the pieces of charred and burnt flesh of little school children out of buses that were bombed by terrorist?
Have you ever had to bury your friends that were killed in terrorist attacks, or go the families that lost their sons and to try to comfort them…those who gave their lives to keep you safe?
Have you ever had to rebuild your home because of terrorist rockets , and to pull your neighbors from piles of a heap of lumber and brick to find some injured and some alive?
Have you ever had to give up all that is precious to you to fight terrorism, to give up your identity, your family life, your friends, to give up any normality of a free life?
Have you ever go out on missions for 40 -50 hours at a time with no backup, no relief, no stopping, because this is the price many of us have paid?
Have you ever had to deal with a terrorist on his ground and to face him for who he is?
So what have these grand conclusion you have drawn cost you or what experience in real life are they based on?
I grew up in one of the hardest times in American history as far as the ethnic position of a Jew. I was beaten by Blacks because they felt the Jews (the liberal civil rights activist) had cheated them, and I was beat up by the white supremacist because believed the Blacks would have never gotten what they did without our help….But none of that ever made me want to blow up buildings or buses! In fact my friends are Muslims (real Muslims who we equate each other as brothers) Blacks, Whites, Orientals, and other Jews and we watch each others backs…but our lives and understandings are based in reality and not some liberal fantasy! In fact I hope that Herman Cain and Lt. Col. Allen West take the presidency and show America what is real and get all of the traitors and internet playboys out of Washington and save this country while there is still something to save!

There are holes in your thinking bigger than mountains, you said:
If Jews would just consider themselves to be Americans and not Jews, and freely inter-marry, and “open up” religious Judaism to converts, the way that Christians and Buddhists and Hindus and even Muslims do it, then anti-Semitism would be gone — totally gone — within a generation.

Oh so all of the other worlds religions have peace? Muslims are at peace with every other group of Muslims? Go tell that to the people of Bahrain who had their country ravished and torn with the Support of our State department that the protestors (majority) were not even legal citizens! In their protest with the tents they were selling drugs committing prostitution and even beating people and destroying cars dressed as Policemen! ( dressed as Policemen fraudulently) And gave the videos to CNN and they played them! Yeah these animals are the ones you want to give your daughter to marry? Say what you will I was there!!!!
Just like the Zionistic Liberals are a disease to Jews so are the fanatic Jihadist a disease to good Muslims!!! I do not want to bring this to a theological debate, and I will not…however the hatred you speak of is ancient it started with Cain….and ran through the ages…the hatred of Muslims to Jews started with Ismael ans Esau and continues…and you are going to solve it in generation? Get Real!
Your statement in the most simple logic is “If all cats would breed with all dogs then the outcome would be there would be a new breed and dogs and cats would never fight again!” Absurd at best!
What makes you think any Observant Islamic women would marry you?
Muslims have been resented by each other than the other nations in relation to time and history! Do you think that the Islamic countries have a history of total egalitarian societies? Dream on!
Another thing….If you think that throwing away you heritage will get you the respect of other people I have news for you! YOU ARE 2000% WRONG! If anything they will disrespect you for this!
Can you get anymore Muslim than King Fiasal? ” I will quote you his exact words to me… “A Jew who is not faithful to keep the Sabbath and go in the way of his fathers and heritage..Cannot be trusted! A man that is a traitor to his heritage, and his God will also betray you as well and cannot be trusted!”
He is talking about people like you! get it!

You talk about half Jews….well look up the ancestry of Hitler and Karl Marx! Very interesting! Which half created the monsters? Maybe mingling is not such a great Idea after all! And the so called half Jews of Hollywood are responsible for the moral corruption of the United States as well! Maybe you should write a book! The Great achievements of half breeds and you can start with Obamination! But it may be wise to wait until we begin to feel the aftermath of his lunacy…that way you will not appear to be more foolish than you already are!

@openid.aol.com/runnswim: personal invective! Evidently you have never had the guns of fanatic terrorist trained on you and a price put on your head because you were good at you Job! It gets real personal when someone tells you the only way to peace is not to correct the monsters of society but to simply erasing who you are and your heritage of which I understand you comprehend so little about! That is personal on every front!
In reality the Terrorist of the world and your theory are one! If everybody becomes like them then they have fulfilled their conquest! Likewise you propose everyone to mingle to become like you and the world will be at peace! So what happens to that nasty human nature it disappears with cross breeding?….Why has not some genius figured that out centuries ago?

JV, you have to excuse Larry. He is so left leaning, he needs down guys to keep him from falling flat. I once indicated he was a “self” loathing Jew, to which he took great exception. My opinion stands.

Basically his post to you was nothing more than hanging that dead cayote over the fence. He loves putting extremely personal information out on the web, yet has a fear of another Muslim blowing him up in an airplane, consequently, as a liberal, he is willing to abdicate his 4th Amendment rights.

Perhaps Larry should take a trip to Normandy, or even Arlington, to see all the headstones with the Star of David, and then count the number of Crecent Moons on those headstones. Oh, wait, the Muslims of the ME, under the direction of Hussaini were on the opposite side. The migration of Muslims to western nations is a new thing (last 75 years) and the resentment toward them is not because they practice a cult-like religion, but because they are stealth in their objections to change western society. CAIR is a prime example. Yet, I can find no Jewish organization that has been convicted of terrorist activies that equals the Holyland Foundation.

We are ALL tribal in many respects. Italians seen to live in the same area as other Italians, same with Asians, the Vietnames, Mexicans. That is part of our human DNA. So what? But to whine because the tribe you belong to happens to be blowing shit up all over the world and someone eyes you with suspicion, is pandering to victimhood. I guess I should resent all those John Wayne movies where he is out to kill Indians. Instead, Wayne is my favorite actor of all time.

When I see Muslim, marching by the thousands in New York City or Dearborn, Michigan, demanding that radicalism be eliminated from their faith, instead of marching holding Palestinian flags and the Crecent of Islam flags, maybe then I will decide they care more about their nation, the U.S., instead of trying to bring Shir’ia law here. Until then……………….

@retire05: Very well and objectively put! Retire 05! Thank you I am very glad to see someone else rubs shoulders with reality!

Mr. Hoffman, Your last two posts (#15, #16) make my point, far better than I could ever have made it.

Human nature can’t be repealed. Humans in general are suspicious of any insular group of people, who keep themselves separated from the general population, as a tribe. The Amish can get away with it without too much resentment, because they truly keep to themselves and have no influence over the rest of society. Try to imagine how the country’s views of the Amish would change, were they to move off their remote farms, into the boardrooms and top management of the nation’s top financial institutions, both federal and private, as well as boardrooms and top management of both news and entertainment media. And no one was allowed to join the Amish, save for those who were Amish only by virtue of birth.

Human nature being what it is (and will always remain), when times get bad or when there are other reasons to be dissatisfied, a scapegoat will be sought and the insular group with disproportionate influence and power will be blamed. You may rightly protest that this is unfair (just as general hatred directed toward everyday American Muslims is unfair), but that, again, is simply human nature. The Jews have repeatedly experienced this, over the centuries.

There is a wonderful quote (originated, actually, by a Jewish cancer researcher at the U of California San Francisco): “any experiment which has failed 1,000 times should be viewed with suspicion.” In this case, the “experiment” is to say that, “this time, we can get away with being insular and also working to gain disproportionate influence and power and nobody will blame us, as a group, when times get tough.” This experiment has failed, repeatedly, over the centuries and it will continue to fail, because human nature is human nature.

The second point is to look at your response. You are angry at me for being politically incorrect and relating what I believe to be the truth (in other words, you are shooting the messenger), and your umbrage is justified by (1) the Spanish Inquisition, (2) the Holocaust, and (3) the reality of modern day terrorism. But none of these things has anything at all to do with why it is that Jews have always been resented by some people in America and continue to be resented by some people in America. It has nothing to do with the unpleasant things which Nan experienced, at earlier times in her life, because of (in her words) her “Jewish blood.” The price that Jews have always paid for being insular and not assimilating has been resentment and discrimination and, at times, persecution. Any experiment which has failed a thousand times should be viewed with suspicion.

In your recent comments, you provide a vigorous defense of maintaining the genetic purity of Jews. I don’t know how your words could be interpreted in any other way. If I am in error or if I have overstated this, please do correct me and explain whatever point you were trying to make, for greater clarity. So I’m a half breed and Obama is a half breed and we mongrels are inferior to you purebreds. Or what else were you meaning to say, if I misunderstood?

I will say that your position is antithetical to great American ideal of the melting pot. Everyone has the inalienable rights to free association and choosing one’s spouse by whatever criteria one wishes to use and to raise one’s children in whatever manner one chooses (limited only by health and well being of said children). But life choices have consequences and one should be prepared to experience resentment and even discrimination when one chooses to retain membership in a closed and insular group, inaccessible to other members of society who were not born into this group.

In my comments, I was specifically referring to the topic of the current blog post, which is discrimination and resentment directed toward minorities in the USA, as expanded up by Nan’s comment #1. I am saying nothing about Muslim/Jewish relationships, which are an entirely different matter, about which I do not care to debate, as I have no unique personal insights to offer and nothing to say which hasn’t been said 1,000 times before.

Retire05’s comments have nothing whatsoever to do with the present discussion, which has nothing at all to do with the relative merits of contributions of Jews versus Arabs or anything else of that nature. Just as irrelevant is the reference to the prior debate about TSA policies, which retire05 continues to grossly misrepresent. The one exception might be his suggestion that Italians have, to some extent, exhibited tribal tendencies within the USA, analogous to that of Jews, as have Mexicans. My response is that these examples directly support my point. To the extent that Italians and Mexicans have, at times and in certain areas, maintained a culture of insular tribalism, “innocent” Italians and Mexicans have been blamed for the perceived sins of their tribe. Cultures which willingly assimilate largely escape resentment and discrimination, save for that associated with race.

My Dad has told me stories of growing up in Detroit in the 1920s. Jews and Italians in his general neighborhood had some conflicts with one another, but also had the shared bond of discrimination. My Dad had some good Italian friends, growing up in his neighborhood. Once Italians assimilated, the discrimination and resentment ended.

Wikipedia has a long list of famous people who converted to Judaism.
I know of many others, not so famous.
There is a simple way to convert into Judaism.
It is not impossible.
It isn’t even rare!

openid.aol.com/runnswim,
I have to say that in previous times it did not applye only to the jewish community,
I have seen many part of the same TOWN divided in quaters of IRISHS other of ITALIENS, or JEWISHS
or FRENCHS ,or SCOTCHS, or CHINEESES and other each I think would feel more secure with each other,
now the IMMIGRANTS are not the same as those, diffrent country with more different mentality
which are more keeping to themself because their religion are their politic also, so they don’t want to assimilate, but they want to impose their politics, and when the cityzen notice it, they have a negative view of them with reason, because it’s their COUNTRY that other want to change, and they listen for a while very tolerant but when they see abuse to impose, that is enough to get the citizens to shut down on them , with dislike that doesn’t go away for as long as the abuse is on.

@openid.aol.com/runnswim: Over 6800 Jews have died in Israel during the last the last 25 years due to Terrorism! while less that a thousand Palestinians have died due to Military and Police actions! ( of which they put themselves in harms way!) But what do we hear from this Administration “The Poor Palestinians” ….More than kind of slanted and distorted ! We trade 400 criminal Terrorist for one or two soldiers who were kidnapped and yet we are called inflexible? We provide them with electricity and water of which they do not pay for as agreed, but we are inhumane? We gave Arafat all that he requested 5 times and he would not sign for fear of his life, and yet we are called the war mongers? The discrimination thrown about by this administration is no less than insanity. Even with Syria the murderous son of Assad can kill off hundreds and yet the money keeps rolling from the White House to his hands!
You present many false and untrue statements just like the mainstream media! Be sure to understand to say that you have a parent that is Jewish is one thing but there is no such thing as a “half Jew” … it sounds something like a half chicken or a half cow! You are either Jewish or you are not! So when you talk about half breeds and what they are that is your words not mine and you put yourself there nobody else! Just because someone watches an airplane take off it does not make him a pilot!
You say that Jews don’t allow converts! And they are Isolationist very wrong the government of Israel has always sent crews of doctors and technicians to every catastrophe where the country will receive them! I ask you how many were sent from the Islamic countries? False the fact is that in the last 20 years their have been more converts than in the last 200 years! What is true is that we do not allow anyone to convert who has not shown beyond doubt that he really and actually wants to be part of the people of Israel (Jewish)! For someone to try to make anything else out of it is to be a perpetrator of lies! Because you do not even understand enough to know what you are talking about.
If I used your principle for not continuing being Jewish this trial of a 1000 times that would leave us with two solutions! We should just wipe off the face of the earth every Jihadist, because we have given them more than a thousand chances for peace! Or rather to just send all of mankind straight to hell because we have all sinned and none of us are perfect or ever have been! So with your criteria all of mankind should give up and die because we have failed much more than a 1000 times…But as it is obvious your profound wisdom is void of God’s compassion and mercy just like the Godless socialist who taught you and they are the criminals that perpetuate the hatred of the world between men because they use it to usurp the power they wickedly enjoy! The very groups this Administration supports are the ones who devour their own people, and you call this good? Distorted! Depraved! which ever it makes no mind to me but I hope you live long enough to have to face head on the distortion you portray!

@Nan G: Nan G this guy is so he could not find his ass in a wind storm! Jews are only 1/1200 of the world. And the contributions for both good and evil are more than any other race! Prof. Heber made mustard gas, while Prof. Wietzman developed Kordite which afforded the Allies in WWI to out range the guns of Germany!
Being Jewish is a life of discipline and order, a life of learning and reflection! We only come closer to God by way of wisdom, understanding and knowledge! As it is written” The eyes of a wise man are in his head” Meaning that as a person really learns truth and approaches closer to God his eyes are focused on his own heart and not casting at others! Which is definitely contrary to liberal thought! Nan G thank you for your comment!……Funny if you go to a liberal arts college for 4 years you know it all….However as a Jew you can study for 70 years six hours a day in the Holy writings and yet you will have only learned one face of the law (Torah) out of 72! Really bright guys these liberals? Never saw anyone run out of a Synagogue with a bomb strapped to his back to blow up innocent civilians yet!

@ilovebeeswarzone: Bees People like this guy miss it all! What makes America great is what they want to take from us! To be free and to have the liberty to worship God with no contrary motive to your fellow man. To be able to have free enterprise and to provide for the living of you family without being dependent on the State. To be yourself and yet have the right to participate and to delegate concerning those who rule over you, to be each one an individual and yet for us all the as one as Americans!
This is what has made this country great! This is what has made us different! Thomas Jefferson learned this from the study of the Jewish law! This is also the reason we have the right to assembly which they are working hard to take from us! The 2nd Amendment!

JV Hoffman, one thing for sure the JEWS participated in providing jobs for many other religion believers,
for generations after generations on the same jobs, and many owe that to the JEWS,
BECAUSE THEY WHERE GIFTED ON BUSYNESS, AND THEY WHERE IN ALL KINDS
from building houses to general store owners, to small repair items busynesses, to corner grocery store,
in sometimes poor district allowing the people to pay later, sometimes never.
so it is not correct to say that they didn’t mix and assimilate, as a matter of fact they did more
to assimilate than other nation of immigrants. I think that is why they have the support of so many AMERICANS
in their quest for living free and peacefull, even if it cost the elimination of their ennemy if it’s come to
them attacking ISRAEL,

JV Hoffman, you are a source of great knowledge,
hope you stay with us a long time.

@ JV Hoffman:

Here’s what you said (#22):

Be sure to understand to say that you have a parent that is Jewish is one thing but there is no such thing as a “half Jew” … it sounds something like a half chicken or a half cow! You are either Jewish or you are not! So when you talk about half breeds and what they are that is your words not mine and you put yourself there nobody else!

You also said, previously (#15):

You talk about half Jews….well look up the ancestry of Hitler and Karl Marx! Very interesting! Which half created the monsters? Maybe mingling is not such a great Idea after all! And the so called half Jews of Hollywood are responsible for the moral corruption of the United States as well! Maybe you should write a book! The Great achievements of half breeds and you can start with Obamination!

Note that you were the one who introduced the term “half-breeds” to this conversation.

I wish that you’d stop bringing up Arabs and Islam with regard to the various conflicts with Jews. I’ve said nothing about this. I haven’t addressed this issue at all in this thread, much less made an effort to defend the Arab/Muslim point of view. As stated, I have no unique, original, or important insights regarding this, beyond the arguments made on both sides, thousands of times. It’s got nothing to do with the issues at hand.

I never said that it wasn’t possible to convert to Judaism. I think it’s accurate to say that this has never been encouraged or even particularly welcomed. I think it’s also accurate to say that gentile converts to Judaism are generally not accepted as “true” Jews to the extent that a Jewish convert to Christianity would be accepted as a “true” Christian. There is much concern that intermarriage is leading to the demise of Judaism, e.g.

1. An extreme view:

http://www.jdl.org/index.php/threats-adversaries/assimilation-intermarriage/

2. A more balanced view:

http://www.nmajh.org/weblog/shapingspace/2008/04/draw-line-is-intermarriage-significant.html

What I have never been able to find is a proposal that, to combat this threat to the continued existence of Judaism, positive “outreach” efforts should be made, the way these efforts are made by truly open religions.

The last paragraph of #22 is one large straw man (and an equally large rant). I have said nothing at all expressing any degree of sympathy to jihadists and your statement that I think that “mankind should just give up and die” is a grotesque distortion.

My simple point was to say that insularity, in the presence of conspicuous material success and disproportionate power, has a price, in this case, persistent resentment and occasional persecution. This, however, has absolutely nothing to do with Jewish-Arab/Islamic conflicts, which are an entirely different and unrelated matter.

@ilovebeeswarzone: I don’t know about being a source of knowledge because it seems the more I learn the dumber I feel! Beside I will be here a while because if i died it would cause an imbalance in the world! Too many terrorist would be happy and cause that! beside if I went up I would spoil what ever they would be doing there! If I went down I would only make their flames hotter! So I am kinda stuck here for a while! Thank you for the undeserved comment! I am just a Southern Jew who never learned how to back down from what I know to be right! None of us are really worth anything without the other! I also appreciate you commentaries as well,,,they are in good mind with a good heart and a good focus!

@openid.aol.com/runnswim: So now the chicken tells the Cow that he knows more about cows than the cow does? Is this what you are trying to say? I do not need any organization to tell me what has existed in Jewish law for over 3,400 years! If Jews intermingle under your thesis than they will be no more Jews….hence non-existent (dead)! Just a hint of common sense Dah! How can you understand something you clearly display you have no real knowledge of ??????? Get real!!!
All the Philosophy in the world will not be able to efficiently explain the taste of an Steak! you have either eaten one or you have not! You have been clearly exposed as an ignorant Philosopher so move on!

@JV Hoffman (#29): You make my point with far greater clarity than I’ve been able to achieve. So I’ll let you have the last word.

JV Hoffman thank you also.

openid.aol.com/runnswim.
thank you, I like your comment too,
there is always a calming effect to read your comment,
I never read your anger, maybe because you’re cooling it in the surf swimming,
you take after your father more than half
