Obama hates mass shootings but he’s apparently down with one death at a time- UPDATED

Following the tragic shooting in Oregon today Barack Obama promptly and predictably sought the microphone to make sure a crisis didn’t go to waste.

President Obama made an impassioned case that the issue of gun violence is “something we should politicize” following a mass shooting on Thursday at a community college in Oregon.

A visibly angry Obama blasted Congress for being unwilling to change the nations gun laws in response to a wave of mass shootings that have cast a cloud over his presidency.

The truth is Obama has presided over a good number of mass shootings:

Obama has been confronted with several high-profile incidents gun violence during his presidency, including shootings in Tucson, Ariz; Aurora, Colo; Newtown, Conn.; and most recently in Charleston, S.C.

The problem is that Obama has, to coin a phrase, acted stupidly. He has a habit of summoning all kinds of emotion when an event lends itself to his political goals. He did it with the Trayvon Martin shooting, the Christopher Brown shooting and Freddie Gray’s death. He does it again today, with the suspension of gun ownership as his goal. He said said something I found incredible:

“The United States of America is the one advanced nation on Earth in which we do not have common sense on gun safety laws.”

So none of the gun laws on the books all over the country are common sense? Really? Typically, in his statement he referred to himself 28 times.

He has yet to say a word about Kate Steinle (or Chris Kyle or Brian Moore).

While he’s all hot and bothered by another mass shooting, he really doesn’t seem to give a damn when they happen one or two at a time. There were 60 shooting deaths in Chicago alone in September. 60. Count ’em. There have been six shooting deaths since Monday. There have been 348 shooting deaths in Chicago this year.

By August 15 shooting deaths totaled 200 in the city of Baltimore.

There have been 336 gun deaths in Los Angeles County this year.

As of September 20 there were 244 gun deaths in New York City.

According to Obama, none of those cities have any “common sense” gun laws. Obama never let on what “common sense” gun laws would look like but you can pretty well guess.

Total gun fatalities in those four cities this year? 1192

Total fatalities from mass shootings in 2015? 26

I am not making light of any mass shooting, but good grief, why doesn’t Obama give a damn about the endless shootings in big cities? I’m not buying the crocodile tears. Am I suggesting Obama is disingenuous? Is he ever not? Lots of pouty face for mass shootings which have claimed 26 lives this year but none for the other 1200? As far as Obama is concerned, this is all about politics. It’s another chance to grab the golden ring- banning Americans from owning guns. Mass shootings move people far more than the drip, drip, drip of single deaths. It’s a crisis not to be wasted.

“This is a political choice that we make, to allow this to happen every few months in America,” Obama said. “We collectively are answerable to those families who lose their loved ones because of our inaction.”

It’s your fault, you see. Did he make you feel sufficiently guilty?

And we don’t even know the facts yet but it is reported that the shooter singled out Christians. Don’t you wonder why we know nothing of the shooter yet?

UPDATE– WE HAVE TO DO SOMETHING!

But what? What are the solutions?

Obama pummels the straw man:  “And what becomes routine is the response from those who oppose any sort of gun control legislation.”

Biden: Let’s not let people have bazookas or F-15’s.

Sanders: We need “serious gun control” but I have no idea what that means: “I don’t know that anybody knows what the magic solution is,”

Mark Halperin: We must do something but I have no idea what because I’m “not an expert in the field.”

As I suggested in a remark, perhaps we need to make schools “double gun free zones.” Yeah, that’s the ticket.

As Joe Scarborough noted, Connecticut passed a flurry of gun control legislation following Sandy Hook, none of which would have prevented Sandy Hook.
