Obama calls his capitulation to Iran ‘historic’ and in the same breath says ‘IF it leads to final comprehensive deal we’ll all be safer’
Well then….guess Israel and the world has nothing to worry about then.
The U.S. and international negotiators announced the hard-fought framework for an Iranian nuclear deal Thursday, capping days of exhaustive and tense talks that blew past their original deadline.
The preliminary agreement allows all sides — the U.S., Iran and five other world powers — to continue working toward a final deal by a June 30 deadline.
Speaking in the Rose Garden shortly after negotiators unveiled the plan in Switzerland, President Obama called the agreement a “historic understanding.”
“It is a good deal,” Obama said.
Peace in our time indeed…
More from the NYT: “[I]t was unclear how and whether Iran would be compelled to answer the International Atomic Energy Agency’s outstanding quesitons about ‘possible military dimensions’ of Iran’s program in the past.” That’s another key western demand — UN inspectors won’t know if Iran is conducting new research into a military enrichment program if they don’t know how much research has already been conducted. It sounds to me increasingly like all that was really agreed to here was the number of centrifuges, no enrichment at Fordo, and the promise of sanctions being lifted very soon, assuming Iran complies with what’s asked of it initially.
What a mess Obama has wrought and it sounds like Israel recognizes this fact:
Even before the parameters were presented, Steinitz joined senior Israeli officials who in recent days began speaking about the possibility of Israeli military action, after months in which the idea had not been spoken about publicly.
Asked on Israel Radio whether Jerusalem would consider a military operation even against US opposition, Steinitz said “if we have no choice, we have no choice.”
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted in recent days that Israel would not feel bound by any agreement eventually signed, but Steinitz’s words were the most explicit in a while that Israel had definitely not taken the military option “off the table.”
