Obama campaigns in Vegas while New Yorkers eat from dumpsters [Reader Post]

Barack Obama dropped in for a cup of coffee along the Jersey shore with his new BFF Chris Christie and got what is really the only thing he wanted from that visit- a photo-op. A chance to appear as though he cared. A chance to look Presidential. A chance to appear as though he was doing his job.

Christie was sickeningly effusive in this praise of Obama.

Then it was off to Vegas, baby, complete with a newly acquired load of…..er…..gravitas!

From the Obama flacks at Yahoo:

NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev.–Gone are the jokes about “Romnesia” and the loose talk of a “campaign marathon extravaganza.” For Barack Obama, the president of a nation reeling from a storm that devastated the Eastern Seaboard, it's time for gravitas.

Standing in front of a skyline of red mountains not far from the College of Southern Nevada, Obama's election address sounded more like the speeches he delivered when he campaigned for president four years ago. His original message of hope and compromise, subdued by four years of a stubbornly high unemployment rate and partisan gridlock, re-emerged Thursday.

The jokes and the ridicule aren't playing and it seems Obama has caught on:

While almost all of his speeches before superstorm Sandy were filled with direct mentions of his GOP challenger, the president mentioned Mitt Romney by name only once during the speech. Obama chose instead to refer to Romney as “my opponent,” “the governor,” or “the guy who's running for president right now.” He also sought to reclaim the word “change” as his own, hammering Romney as a president who would return to policies embraced by former President George W. Bush.

New Yorkers are dumpster diving for food:

In the face of hunger, in the face of peril, Mayor Bloomberg makes what has to be one of the most stupid decisions in history to divert relief supplies from those in need to……….the NYC marathon!

As hundreds of thousands of Big Apple residents suffer in homes left without power by Hurricane Sandy, two massive generators are being run 24/7 in Central Park — to juice a media tent for Sunday’s New York City Marathon.

And a third “backup” unit sits idle, in case one of the generators fails.

The three diesel-powered generators crank out 800 kilowatts — enough to power 400 homes in ravaged areas like Staten Island, the Rockaways and downtown Manhattan.

As of Friday morning, 11 generators sat outside of the park and a food services truck dropped off hundreds of cases of water, sparking angered responses from hurricane victims.

“I am from Coney Island where ev

erything is flooded and underwater,” Yelena Gomelsky, 65, said. “I live 1 block from the ocean where everything is floating. “[Seeing the generators and water] makes me feel so bad. People have no food, no water, nothing.

“They should make all of these runners bring food and water to people's houses who need it. They should bring all of these generators to buildings where old people live and give them power.”

Since emergency executive orders have been issued, the governor, mayor — or even President Obama — could take the generators for a more important use, explained Pace University law professor Bennett Gershman.

Such an emergency action would need the approval of the City Council, state Legislature or Congress. And they would have to compensate the owners of the devices.

And Chris Christie cares so deeply that he'll take help from anyoneunless they're non-union:

SEASIDE HEIGHTS, NEW JERSEY (WAFF) –

The hurricane-ravaged east coast has been receiving north Alabama help, but crews learned they'll be doing work in Long Island, New York instead of in New Jersey.

Crews from Decatur Utilities headed up there this week, but Derrick Moore, one of the Decatur workers, said they were told by crews in New Jersey that they can't do any work there since they're not union employees.

The crews that are in Roanoke, Virginia say they are just watching and waiting even though they originally received a call asking for help from Seaside Heights, New Jersey.

Understandably, Moore said they're frustrated being told “thanks, but no thanks.”

Huntsville Utilities said they were not turned away and are up in storm ravaged areas working.

Joe Wheeler EMC said they did not respond to New Jersey, but did go up to Maryland and headed home once they were done.

FEMA has reportedly abandoned Staten Island:

NBC's Brian Williams conducted a devastating exposé on the latest developments of the ravaged areas in Sandy's path. “There's no Red Cross,” on resident exclaimed. Multiple residents vented their frustrations at the camera “Where is FEMA?” “Who do we go to for help?” “We need help!” NBC reported on the growing outrage by those hit hardest by the superstorm, cut off from access to necessities they are dependent on government aid to provide for their basic needs until the city has removed enough of the damage for residents to be able to leave. “They are still pulling out bodies,” one resident said. Many residents who claimed they had lost everything have said that they haven't received any help from FEMA or the Red Cross.

The marathon goes on while people sit in the dark and starve. Obama abandons New York and New Jersey for his campaign needs.

Ever notice that when tragedy strikes, Obama has the same destination?

Maybe Obama could get Jay Z, who “knows what my(Obama's) life is like” , to send some relief champagne.

I bet some of that $40,000 per person money could help now.

Heckuva job, Barry.

UPDATE: Bloomberg canceled the marathon under pressure from hundreds of thousands of sensible people
