Two European Space Agency observatories combined forces to show the Andromeda Galaxy in a new light. Herschel sees rings of star formation in this, the most detailed image of the Andromeda Galaxy ever taken at infrared wavelengths, and XMM-Newton shows dying stars shining X-rays into space.

ESA’s Herschel and XMM-Newton space observatories targeted the Andromeda Galaxy, the nearest large spiral galaxy, which like our own Milky Way contains several hundred billion stars. This is the most detailed far-infrared image of the Andromeda Galaxy ever taken and clearly shows that more stars are on their way.

In this image, Herschel’s infrared image of the Andromeda Galaxy shows rings of dust that trace gaseous reservoirs where new stars are forming and XMM-Newton’s X-ray image shows stars approaching the ends of their lives. Both infrared and X-ray images convey information impossible to collect from the ground because these wavelengths are absorbed by Earth’s atmosphere.

This is an open thread so I guess I don’t have to tie my comment into the story. But I will. Aliens from outer space would have more of a clue than this twit that I’m quoting from the Drudge.
Responding to the opening of Wal-Mart stores in DC.
Brenda Speaks, a Ward 4 ANC commissioner, actually urged blocking construction of the planned store in her ward at Georgia and Missouri avenues NW partly because of that risk. Addressing a small, anti-Wal-Mart rally at City Hall on Monday, Speaks said young people would get criminal records when they couldn’t resist the temptation to steal.

It’s good to know about Andromeda, as we are going to smack into it in about 3 billion years.

I still don’t understand the claims against Walmart. Walmart is a saint compared to company’s like city group, AIG, general electric, goldman and sacks, lehman brothers or G.M. Some of the above company’s have been bailed out after making toxic investments several times. Certain members of the “elite” think its a store for simpletons. I think that is ignorant & a poor reason to dislike a store. but I’m willing to listen if someone has a legitimate statement about why walmart and its low prices are evil, let’s hear it.

I was reading more interesting news. China is keeping workers busy by over producing products which probably won’t sell. One group being over produced is products to harness green energy. That sector is being over produced by 54%. It has got so bad that BP, the largest alternative energy company in the world, has had to lay off over 400 people because the company has claimed that the green energy market has been saturated. So where are the green energy jobs going to be in the U.S.? They are going to be in installation and maintance. Chances are they are going to be the same people like the electric companies or better yet the cable companies. Have you ever seen the local cable company? They might have 100 repair people for the whole zip code. Some green energy farms, and I’m sure more of those farms will work this way, are touted as “classrooms” to teach students how to work and run green energy farms. What they are doing is having people pay to do the maintance work. I’m sure that white picket fence of Tom Sawyer has seen those same people.

Obama touts 5 million new jobs in green energy, but here are three problems with that number. The first one I already mentioned. The number of workers building solar panels and wind turbines is going to be much smaller than what Obama has invisioned just because countries such as China are over producing the products. The second problem is this includes education. A teacher in a classroom teaching about green energy and the janitor cleaning up the classroom afterwards are included in those numbers. The third problem is he included weatherization. That’s right, it’s the same guys that put insulation in roofs and in the walls or the ones that install double pane windows. I’m sure those jobs are already taken.

I just did a search for Telaprompters and found a google ad that read:

Buy The Same Telaprompter Obama Uses!

You should see what Niall Ferguson did to the Morning Schmos( an Obamster choir) on MSNBC, yesterday. He’s a history professor at Harvard and a contributor to Newsweak. He calls the Won woefully unprepared, weak, and over his head in foreign affairs. His advisors are second and third rate. Last week his foreign policy was to flip, to flop, and to flip again. On Monday, he said one thing. On Tuesday Hillary said the opposite. On Wednesday, Clapper continued with his theatre of the absurd. The events unfolding are not democratic- with the Muslim Brotherhood in charge. Israel will be attacked. He really took the whole MSNBC choir to the woodshed. I wonder if that will be his last contribution to that mess at NBC. Great comedy.

@Zac:
Because it’s from Arkansas and didn’t go to Hahvahd or Yale. 😉

Thanks, Curt, for bringing some information about the modern, scientific age to this blog.

Zak #5 Does the fact you can’t spell teleprompter bother you? You’ve got nothing better to do than search for them on google?

Wheeler: Honestly your the only thing that’s ever bothered me about not being able to spell teleprompter. I’m not gonna play 20 questons with you, so don’t bother asking any more of them.

Libtard1, Consevatives are usually much better versed in actual science than leftists like yourself. Take your backhanded compliment and shove it up…Uranus.

(Sorry everyone. At least one Uranus joke should have been expected.)

Anyone see the story about what may be considered the new planet instead of Pluto?

That is a cool picture!

@Hardright
I saw the story, if it’s there, it’s waaaaay out in the Ort cloud, and may be a gas-giant similar to Saturn or Jupiter. They still have some math to work out so that they can give one of the space-telescopes a place to aim and look.

@ Patvann, Maybe the Russians or Chinese will do it. NASA is not budgeted for that.
The Gummint Buyout of GM and Chrysler, AIG and those folks “ate Yer Telescope” Funding. NASA is busy chasing the Climate Change Monster. That is Funded.

Gas giant? [Insert democrat joke here].

They can tell there is something there due to the effect it’s gravity has on stars etc. around it.
These days all NASA will be doing is launching a satellite that broadcasts Ishtar 24 hours a day.

I hope this link works.

Zac this is in response to your question about Walmart and why certain people have issues with the way they have treated their employees. For the record it’s not that I’m anti-Walmart, I just prfer Target.

The Power of the Pocketbook
……………
Lies with the House of Representatives.

The GOP-led House voted today to block funding to implement the nation’s health care law.

Specifically, the House voted to
1) prohibit any funds be used by the Internal Revenue Service to carry out the law’s mandate that Americans buy health insurance. The individual mandate, one of the law’s key tenets, has been struck down by federal courts.

The House also adopted an amendment by Rep. Denny Rehberg, R-Mont., to
2) bar the Labor and Health and Human Services Departments from spending any money for the rest of fiscal year 2011 on the health care law.

Still another provision adopted today would
3) ban the government from paying the salaries of any federal employee involved in implementing the health care law.

Another front in this war:
Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas) is seeking to pass a measure that would ban the federal government from using funds to challenge Arizona’s new immigration law.

THERE, excellent job, the CONSERVATIVES are doing, and they are also doing it TRANSPARENTLY,
one thing done very well. NOW for the next thing to do, may I suggest, CONTINIUE,
you cannot afford to rest yet, but IT will come , there is more clutter to check carefully.
and dont turn your back on them for a second.

Cnn appears to be waking up to reality after CBS reporter Lara Logan was savagely assaulted to cries of “Jew! Jew!”

It seems that a CNN female reporter has also sat on nasty stories about human/women’s rights in Egypt.

“Egypt’s harassed women need their own revolution,” by Mary Rogers for CNN, February 16:

News of the chilling attack on CBS reporter Lara Logan, as well as other sexual assaults against women during Egypt’s uprising, show that attacks against women have not gone away.

I speak from experience.
While most of my days covering Tahrir Square during the last few weeks were free from harassment, there was one day when I was groped.
Another colleague almost had her pants ripped off by a gang of thugs.

If you are a woman living in Cairo, chances are you have been sexually harassed.*
It happens on the streets,
on crowded buses,
in the workplace,
in schools, and
even in a doctor’s office.

According to a 2008 survey of 1,010 women conducted by the Egyptian Center for Women’s rights, 98 percent of foreign women and 83 percent of Egyptian women have been sexually harassed.

I was walking home from dinner recently when a carload of young men raced by me and screamed out “Sharmouta” (whore in Arabic.)

Before I could respond, they were gone, but I noticed policemen nearby bursting with laughter. I am old enough to be those boys’ mother, I thought.

This incident was minor compared to what happened in 1994, shortly after I moved here. It was winter, and I was walking home from the office, dressed in a big, baggy sweater, and jacket. A man walked up to me, reached out, and casually grabbed my breast.

In a flash, I understood what the expression to “see red” meant. I grabbed him by the collar and punched him hard in the face. I held on to him, and let out a stream of expletives. His face grew pale, and he started to shake. “I’m sorry. I’m sorry,” he whispered.

After a couple of years enduring this kind harassment, I pretty much stopped walking to and from work.

Why is sexual harassment in Egypt so rampant? There could be any number of reasons, but many point to disregard for human rights.

A Luckier Woman Covering Cairo

http://pajamasmedia.com/blog/a-luckier-woman-covering-cairo/?singlepage=true

Stephanie L. Freid is a freelance writer in Israel.

“It comes down to luck. Sheer luck. And when it runs dry, that’s it. I don’t know the details of what happened to Lara Logan at the square. I can imagine it all too well, though. And when I heard the news on Tuesday I was heartsick: My God. That could’ve been me.”

From another point of View but it follows the story line and assigns no responsibility. That is Journalism.

Astronomy is fascinating.
Did you ever notice the similarity of a galaxy, a solar system and an atom?
It makes me wonder “How BIG is big and how SMALL is small?”
Could it be that there are larger spinning bodies out there that galaxies would be just minute particles of, but we can’t see that far out there, and even if we could it wouldn’t matter because of the limitations of the speed of light?
Or that an individual electron spinning around a nucleus (a Neutron) is really a vast collection of subatomic particles we also can’t see?
It’s amazing to think that when you look out at the heavens, what you are looking at is what was in that position millions, or even billions of years ago- that speed of light limitation again.

It’s a real visual Time Machine!

Another thing that’s mind-boggling is that when you look at all those glittering and twinkling objects up there you are probably not looking at a star.
The overwhelming majority of those sparkling things are really galaxies, not stars.

That means every twinkling object contains between 10 million (for a dwarf galaxy) to 1 trillion (for a giant galaxy) stars.

And you’re looking at tens of thousands of galaxies when you look up into a cloudless night sky.
Simply stunning.

I find it hard to believe there isn’t life out there. Whether it’s intelligent life is a matter of conjecture.

But Obama looks like he could have parachuted in from one of those stupid galaxies.

That would be, in Latin: Obama came from the “Studio Galactinus”

Heh!

These women need to discover the wonderful uses of personal mace canisters.

-Or stay away from the savages.

Old Trooper! Its a pleasure to see you on FA as always.

NASA has new missions according to Obama.

(1) “help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math”; (2) “expand our international relationships”; (3) “find a way to reach out to the Muslim world, to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science, math and engineering.”

NASA is kinda like a big community organizer now.

I made post #9 a week ago, I will point out that Richard Wheeler Corrected my spelling and did not even spell my name right.

Zac, Dickie gets very few things right but is a persistent as a Tick on most things. But Chesty Puller He ain’t and despite his references to His Corps, I had MARSOC Members on my Team in the Stans and they were concerned about Winning and NOT an exit Strategy.

MARSOC is the evolution of the Marines into the Spec Ops Community and I cheered it on. It was about time. MARSOC was part of JSOC which is Joint Ops and concentrates ALL of the proper assets on One place for One Stop Shopping.

Like I said, I would buy Dickie a beer at the EUCOM O-Club but he would sit at the bar. I sit with Senior Field Grades and General Officers. My Peer Group. He may not like what He would hear there.

NASA can be funded to do a Real Mission in a Year or so if We can get Congress to trim the Fat on the Budget. Otherwise, Our Space Program Folks will be Hitch Hiking on Russian or Chinese Craft if they allow it.

If I had known Dickie was a solder I would have told him to screw off more respectfully.

Zac. He was an Active Duty Marine. He is now a Full Blown Liberal Loon.
Odd mixture to say the least. But it is Polite to show respect fer Yer Elders.

“All right, they’re on our left, they’re on our right, they’re in front of us, they’re behind us…they can’t get away this time.”
-Chesty Puller

You are right, I should respect my elders even if there nuts. JSOCK joint special operations command, I’ve read quite a bit about that recently. Interesting subject.

JSOC assigned me to the Stans. DOD sent me to NATO.( because I’m so durned Diplomatic.)
I served with NATO Officers that know Me from previous work in the Balkans and Eastern Europe.
You serve where You are sent. Certain Missions require different Skill Sets.

Sir I know better than to call you diplomatic. How have serving at your level changed between the Bush and Obama administrations. I skimmed through Hugh Shelton new book and he was very critical of bush, but I know better than to believe everyone just because they are a general.

Zac, I know and have served with Gen. Shelton and Gen. Franks. I know Gen. Petraeus as well.
They are Gentlemen and Patriots. I know Gen. McCrystal too but I know who I can be frank with and
Who gets “No Comment”.

I respect that answer sir. I just looked at the DOD website there making a lot of budget cuts, wow.

What in your opinion is a good occupational specialty?

Zac, there are many opportunities out there. Choose one that Your Courage will carry and Your Conscience will allow. Score well enough on the ASVAB and a great many doors will be open to You.
But prepare to be Challenged, go beyond what You think your Limits are Mentally and Physically and that will place you in the Upper Percentile of the 3% of Americans that make up Our Armed Forces.

Currently only 3% of the American Population is in Service. You should be aware of that statistic.
That means that the Rest are “At the Mall while America is at War”

NASA is still doing some cool stuff. This baby will make the Hubble proud.

http://www.jwst.nasa.gov/

That is a sad statistic. The majority of young people have ether become socialists or are addicted to television.. I think.

The majority of the US hasn’t read the constitution or the bill of rights I’m not even an american yet and I’ve done that. Oh yea, I’ve been reading the federalist papers, thanks for the advice.

Zac, Most Native Born Americans could not pass the US Citizenship exam the first time around to be honest with you.

Sorry I’m slow my computer is having some issues.

Old Trooper: Sir most of the people I know even some of my extended family would believe the world is flat if Oprah said so.

“Webb will find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, connecting the Big Bang to our own Milky Way Galaxy. Webb will peer through dusty clouds to see stars forming planetary systems, connecting the Milky Way to our own Solar System.”

That’s a contraption for you. Hopefully it works better than my computer.

Zac, Bill Maher believes that da POTUS is centrist. That does not make it so. He has a TV Show too but caters to those that want to believe it. If You really want Your intelligence insulted catch his show. Or watch C-Span reruns of Nancy Pelosi speeches.

Airing things on TV appeals to those of limited thought processes at times. Primarily because it is presented without question.

POTUS is a centrist if he is compared to mao zedong and bill clinton-he is in the center between those guys I guess….

Zac, American Politics is a real puzzle. I have served under the Best and served under the rest. My Deployments to Somalia and the Balkans were products of the Clinton Era. You saw how swell those turned out. we still have Camp Bondsteel there and operational. Where is the outcry to bring that business to a close?

However, You may note that during the previous Taliban Offensive, Kandahar was Heroically Defended by Canadian Forces and they Held. My Unit was 18 Km away from there and that I never doubted that Kandahar was going to be Held. PPLI was the Unit and very Tough Hombres. That is fact, not fiction.

Is that right?. Good to hear. There are tough hombres from all over I guess sir. Even from socialist country’s.

Note sure how we got from the Andromeda Galaxy to Obama and green energy, but our presidents take on jobs in the green energy sector, especially for those now out of work our underemployed is not that good. However, it reminded me of a quote I saw earlier today..

Obama is like green technology. Not yet ready, makes little practical sense, and has to be hyped to be sold. He serves a purpose, but everyone else is too stupid to understand what it is.

Greta, I’m still wondering if the EPA can measure Cattle Flatulence from Satellite Imagery. If so, My spread will be crawling with the “Alphabet” Agencies with warrants to harness that Methane or be fined. My Tax Dollars at work…

Obama’s head is so far up his butt, it’s an now adoptable highway.

Under Obama the alphabet agency’s have probably become community organizations to make people feel good.

Except for DHS. The DHS is like egypt, where groping tourists is the norm.

Nice way to start my morning, OT is back and our country is going to get Zac. Life is good.

Zac, hi, you know that richard wheeler always use a misspel word to attack
the countent of a good comment he choose to hurt, but he’s foolish
to think that it will work.

The Weekly Open Thread is pretty popular…maybe Curt can upgrade it to Semiweekly?

Aqua, good Idea, here is when we all unload all the snow

Greta, hi, that is very well said, I think he is using the green excuse
to make his wish come true and rallie his own army of robots on the tax money payroll
