Wow – Can’t touch that!
Ironically, the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) received 29 complaints of sexism regarding this advertisement.Upon review, the agency rejected these whiny complaints, rightly so.
It is disturbing that a tongue in cheek anniversary video would rise the ire of feminists. Particularly in light of the recent reports of a pregnant gang rape victim in Saudi Arabia being sentenced to 100 lashes. The widespread silence from these same misogynists (yes, I’m talking to you, Camille Paglia) who complained about the Virgin Atlantic video is deafening.
haha excellent advert:) Like the touch of nostalgia.
He might be an egomanic and not always get things right (see Virgin Trains) but the world needs people like Branson to give British Airways a run for their money.
As for feminists – well they like any ‘ism are a mixed bunch. Rights for women are necessary in the last century and in this century but when certain feminist quibble over such stuff like the above, terminology (HIStory – yawn)- it really switches people off from more important issues like women’s pay etc. The problem with most -isms like feminism, socialism etc- is that the see the whole world through that prism and take it to extremes. I would prefer it if people could fight for equal rights. There are areas where men are worst off (custody over kids for example) and if adverts want to ‘objectify’ the image of men (which some do) – they go ahead. Or as Borat would say – ‘Smile pussycat’
Relax
Franky goes to Hollywood.
Awesome song and awesome commercial.
Agree with stix and Gaffa completely. A real wow of a commercial! Love it! Dang feminists always seem to have some problem or another. And I’ll keep the rest of my comments to myself…. “family” forum, ya know. LOL
The funniest part about the video was the size of the mobile phone at the very beginning. Btw I do consider myself a feminist and I didn’t find this particularly offensive. And be real….29 people objected? I’m sure thats a tiny minority of people who saw the commercial.
Did they have mobile phones sans humongous phone bags back in 84?
What can 29 voices do?
It is blatantly hypocritical of feminists and/or feminist organizations to ignore serial victimization of minors at Planned Parenthood, rampant sexism/abuse of women of every age in arab countries yet hyperventilate over this nonsense.
But there’s no risk to fight a commercial like this.
If you want to fight the exploitation in third world countries, Muslims get mad.
And moobats can’t criticize planned parenthood.
Greetings:
I’m old enough to remember when stewardesses were pure eye candy. Now they all seem to look like somebody’s mother. And, funny, I don’t feel any safer. I don’t feel at all.
It was interesting to see the stewardesses from the plane that landed in/on the Hudson River in New York. Probably, the pilots’ wives are the only happy one.
And don’t get me started on “stewards”.
Ok, and that commercial was offensive…..how???????
Obviously this commercial is explotative of men because seeing those stewardesses we’d go an change our tickets and pay ripoff virgin air prices and once we got on the plane they’d ignore us because they’d all have rich CEO boyfriends.
Also, “Relax” by Frankie Goes to Hollywood is about gay sex…
