They’ve finally done it:
In a dramatic display of anger and solidarity over a political scandal that has made Illinois a national laughingstock, lawmakers on Friday voted 114-1 to impeach disgraced Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
It’s the first time in the state’s history that the Illinois House has voted to impeach its governor, notes CBS station WBBM.
The action sets the stage for a state Senate trial on whether Blagojevich should be thrown out of office for corruption and abuse of power. It is unclear when those proceedings will actually get underway.
Blagojevich plans to make a statement at 2 p.m. CST.
House members found evidence that the two-term Democrat had abused his power, including improperly spending tax money, adopting programs without legislative approval and violating state hiring laws.
Granted, this is just the first step in this show. It’s akin to a indictment, and a new Illinois House is going to be seated which means they will need to re-vote on this matter. After which a Senate trial is supposed to take place and there is another BUT…..the Governor is the one that convenes the Senate.
Have your popcorn ready? I have a feeling this is just the opening act, a warm up if you will, for what we have in store for the next four years. Chicago style politics can get real ugly.
