Some updated info on Fred tonight. The MSM has been reporting all day that Fred was skipping the debate Thursday in Florida and was on his way to dropping out. Some nimrod, cough Carl Cameron at Fox (Fox! shocker there huh?) cough, even wrote that he has been looking for a VP slot all along.
Fred Thompson sources say the actor and former Tenn senator may withdraw from the race. There are no plans to attend Thursday’s Florida debate.
Staffers have been on partial pay since the NH primary. The Senators plans are very fluid. As of 8:45 this evening, there are no plans for any announcement about whether he will stay in the race or not. The team is wrestling with very few options. The Senator is in Nashville visiting his mother (in her 90’s) who has been ill.From THE FIRST DAY Fox News broke the story last March of his candidacy, Thompson has always had a vice presidential bid in mind. Today a top aide even mentioned the idea on Brian and the Judge on Fox News Radio.
But tonight comes news that his mother is quite ill and wonder of wonders, he is NOT skipping the debate, yet:
Fred’s mother is ill and her condition has deteriorated today. I ask that everyone and the candidates give the family space to make their own decisions about the process, and respect whatever his wishes may be.
UPDATE at 9:00 pm: To clear up some rumors floating around, just got word from the campaign:
1. Thompson has not pulled out of Florida’s debate Thursday night yet. Fox News is wrong in their reporting yet again, at this stage.
2. Yes, she has been ill for a while, but has improved since earlier today.
Cameron and the folks at Fox who so want Fred out may get there wish, but not today at least. Myself, I don’t believe he will be taking a VP slot if he does leave the race but that doesn’t stop Fox from running the rumor.
As I said earlier, I’m praying he stays in.
Also, please take a moment and sign the petition to keep Fred in the race.
Lastly you have to read this excellent post by Charles at Lifelike Pundits:
Wahhh, Fred isn’t doing well! Wahhh, Rush may not support the GOP nominee!!! Wahhh, I’ll sit the election out and teach the GOP something! Wahhh, we can’t get a good candidate! Wahhh!
CUT THE CRAP.
We are Americans. We do not succeed by whining, we succeed by doing. We do. We accomplish. We succeed.
We aren’t happy enough with the current group? WE MAKE THEM BETTER! We lean on them, and we push them to be better. Push Rudy and Mitt for who specifically they will nominate to the Supreme Court. Lean on McCain for exactly what he’ll do about the border. Demand from the people running for Congress for exact specifics about what they’ll do to keep you happy! And I don’t mean handouts, I mean they had better damn well apologize for everything that cost them the House and Senate and 2006 and they had better promise that they’ll shape up!
YOU WILL NOT MAKE THE COUNTRY BETTER BY GRIPING. YOU WILL MAKE THE COUNTRY BETTER BY GETTING UP AND GETTING INVOLVED.
I wanted Fred, you can see it in my old posts. Well, Fred isn’t happening. What do you want me to do, stick my head in the sand and cry like a little bitch? No! I plan to make Romney or Rudy earn my vote! I plan to write very clear letters, make phone calls to radio stations, and push, shove, kick, and shelp whoever wants the GOP nod to the right.
GET OFF YOUR ASS AND DO SOMETHING.
~~~ You think Reagan would have ever advocated crap like “The case for sitting out 2008”?
Not on your life.
Great message at the right time.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
This is so not true!!!
Please!
It’s to friggen early in the race to drop out!!!!
I consider myself to be a conservative. As such I have certain values and expectations of the individual who will represent the Nation I have served for over 33 years. I voted for Ronald Reagan and was happy with the results.
Since then I’ve passed on casting my ballot, as has the majority of Americans. This year I’ll vote for Fred or Rudy if either of them are the nominee. Fred because he has conservative values, Rudy because I think he can fight the war against Muslim extremists. The others? RINOs. I’m not saying I won’t vote if Rudy or Fred are not the nominee or part of the ticket, but the others… they don’t impress me much.
If Fred Thompson stops campaigning for President… how will we know?
(Sorry. I couldn’t resist paraphrasing Dorthy Parker’s comment upon hearing of the death of Calvin Coolidge).
