Back in 2005 I wrote about Trooper Joseph Pokorny from Pennsylvania who was killed during a struggle with a man trying to avoid arrest:

Ever since then the family of Joe has been trying to bring attention to the fact that if not for the early release of his killer from jail Joe Pokorny would still be alive. Across the nation thousands of violent offenders are released early on parole, most after serving a minimum sentence, and then move on to committing more crimes. A local Pittburgh channel did a report on Joe and this problem:
It’s bad everywhere unfortunately. I, along with the other officers I work with, run into Parolee’s constantly who have served maybe 25% of their sentence and most of these run-ins are after they have committed another crime and we are booking them….again.
In this case it cost the life of Trooper Joe Pokorny.
