Tancredo: Abolish Black, Hispanic Caucuses

White House hopeful Tom Tancredo said Thursday the existence of the Congressional Black Caucus and other race-based groups of lawmakers amounts to segregation and should be abolished.

“It is utterly hypocritical for Congress to extol the virtues of a colorblind society while officially sanctioning caucuses that are based solely on race,” said the Colorado Republican, who is most widely known as a vocal critic of illegal immigration.

“If we are serious about achieving the goal of a colorblind society, Congress should lead by example and end these divisive, race-based caucuses,” said Tancredo, who is scheduled pitch his longshot presidential bid this weekend in New Hampshire.

Tancredo’s request, relayed in a letter to Administration Committee Chairwoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, D-Calif., revived his effort to change House rules to abolish the groups. Besides the Congressional Black Caucus, Democrats also have a Hispanic caucus with 21 members, and Republicans have a comparable Hispanic conference with five full members and 11 “associate” members who are not Hispanic.

The request comes in the wake of reports that freshman Rep. Stephen Cohen, D-Tenn., was refused admission to the Congressional Black Caucus because he is white. All 43 members of the caucus are black.

Cohen said in a statement that he told a reporter that he would be honored to join the caucus but did not apply, “nor has the CBC denied membership to me.”

The political Web site Politico.com, which first reported the issue, quoted Rep. William Clay, Jr., D-Mo., as saying the black membership in his group is “an unwritten rule.”

…..my 2 cents……..

I work in alot of urban settings, (and without excusing the failings and racism in many in the white community), and I must point out racism exists on both sides of the street. One day I was having a football debate with one co-worker when he admitted he wanted one coach to win only because he was black. I challenged him on whether this was a racist remark. He became angry and told me I could never understand because I was white.

Perhaps some might think we deserve it, due to the history of this country. But this was not King’s dream. And right and wrong do not change, regardless of your skin color. I see no moral difference between choosing someone because of their skin color as not choosing someone because of their skin color. Racism and reverse racism are both discriminatory and both cause resentment on either side of the fence. King was right, a color-blind society is the only thing that will end the evils of racism. All these groups do is guarantee racism will continue in a never ending cycle.

This issue always drives me crazy! People preach to us about being colorblind; that skin color doesn’t matter; and yet what do these same people do? They celebrate Ellison Shoji Onizuka…why? Because he’s the first Asian-American in space. People will undoubtedly cast their votes for Obama…because he’s the best candidate? I’m sure there will be those who vote him in office strictly for no other reason than he is black/transracial.

Like Morgan Freeman, I think the way to end racism is to quit talking about it; quit obsessing over it; quit seeing skin color as a thing that matters, positive or negative.

If you want your kid to grow up to be like Tiger Woods, place emphasis on his astounding abilities as a golfer…not on his astounding abilities as a black-asian golfer.

Situations like that frustrate me to no end. I must agree with both Rob and wordsmith. American society currently has a heavy case of reverse-discrimination. If you happen to be an “average middle-class white male”, you will be discriminated against.

Take a look at the college application process and scholarships. Or, how about all these “heritage months” and culture celebration days? Yes, diversity is good, but there is a line.

I use a small test to decide for myself if something is truly racist or discriminatory. Substitute “white” for any other culture and race and decide if you would be skinned alive for it.
