For the background on this story, see yesterday's post here.
Jeff at Protein Wisdom is now under another DoS attack, with his new hosting company. It appears Deb Frisch, who earlier yesterday put up a white flag and admitted she screwed up, is now claiming the opposite as you can see in the updated sections of my earlier post here. Today she's upset that a commentor to Jeff's site had the gall, the unmitigated gall, to suggest that Jeff should defend his family against an attack. In her words:
Here's a comment that sums up how nutty the right is – condoning violence against me because I made a joke on a blog about the death of a nasty rightwing blogger's toddler.
Condoning Jeff's right to protect his family and himself from a twisted lefty as yourself is more like it.
Meanwhile, since Jeff's site is down he is forwarding email that comes his ways to some of the big dogs:
despite a third Denial of Service attack on Goldstein's site getting underway at about 3PM today, he's receiving intermittent comments via e-mail. A couple of the finest:
(Warning: bad language, racism, homophobia, micropenis discrimination and rodentia)
Get over it Jeff. Stop making a big deal over this petty issue. You're the one showing your hairy ass. Fuck you Jeff. The day I wave the U.S. flag with pride is when the Democrats win the White House and Congress. Until then, I raise it upside down in distress. I agree with everything Dr. Frisch said about you. I hope the next plane you fly on crashes.
And:
Like you facist hypocrites never send threats to liberals. Jeff, you got everything you deserved. At least Dr. Frisch didn't go around pushing the UC-Santa Cruz chancellor to suicide like your chipmunk-faced chink bitch friend Michelle Malkin. Only conservative fags like to play the victim. You have a small dick.
Lovely. Oh, btw to those lefties who continue to call any and all Republicans Fascists….please stop spelling it wrong, spell check is your friend.
For some added comedy check out this lefty blog where the writer say's, get this, that while Frisch's behavior is bad Michelle Malkin deserves even more scorn because she may or may not have contributed to the death of Denice Denton.
Get that?
Me neither:
Although we lefties are being slammed for not apologizing for remarks made by someone we never heard of on a blog few of us ever read, Michelle Malkin refuses to express even a flicker of regret for Denice Denton’s suicide. Of course, as she says, Malkin didn’t kill Denice Denton. We don’t know how much of a factor, if any, Malkin’s targeting of Denton was in Denton’s decision to kill herself. However, we don’t know is not the same as no responsibility whatsoever. It’s we don’t know. Meaning, it may have been a factor.
Oooooook.
The blogger then proceeds to take Michelle to task for not acknowledging that this lady committed suicide. Since we all know if we happen to blog about someone and they ended up 6 feet under we then MUST write about it…right?
You have a headache yet? Yeah, me too.
Anyways, this story appeared to have run it's course until this 3rd DoS attack, which is the real story in my mind. Frisch's unhinged behavior is nothing new, we see it all the time, but these attacks against his servers need to be highlighted.
UPDATE 07/09/06 2040hrs PST
Big hat tip to Chad at Independent Sources who found the true context of the comment Deb Frisch points to in her post as a threat to her:
She implies (actually she outright says) that statement was directed at her, but here is the comment in context from Gateway Pundit:
While discussing threats made against families by leftwing activists Gateway Pundit posted the following regarding the group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC):
The group, Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, maintained its actions were protected under the First Amendment.
The government charged that SHAC waged a five-year campaign against Huntingdon Life Sciences, posting on its Web site information about the lab's employees and those who do business with Huntingdon, including their home phone numbers, addresses and where their children attended school.
Many of those people saw their homes vandalized, and they and their families received threatening e-mails, faxes and phone calls. Many were also besieged by protesters parading with photos of mutilated animals and screaming "Puppy killer!" through megaphones at all hours outside their homes.
One woman said she received an e-mail threatening to cut her 7-year-old son open and stuff him with poison.
A man said he was showered with glass as people smashed all the windows of his home and overturned his wife's car.
In the comments section on this post was the following:
"A man said he was showered with glass as people smashed the windows of his home and overturned his wife's car".
Interesting in only this respect: it shouldn't have taken this man any more than one minute or less to grab his shotgun, handgun, or rifle and put an end to this attack. When felonies are being committed, most jurisdictions in the South and West give the homeowner broad leeway in defense of his home and property. This is as it should be, as this kind of thugery will continue to spread until stopped by using whatever means necessary.
Completely different context and obviously linked to the story about SHAC not Deb Frisch.
This is how far this women is gone. She takes a comment that was obviously directed towards a family that WAS attacked and spins it so it sounds like the man is talking about her. Anti-Psychotic meds needed in Arizona asap please.
UPDATE II 7/10/06 1700hrs PST
Since my last update it appears Glenn Reynolds has linked me, very cool and welcome Instapundit readers.
Onto the latest happenings in the scary world of Deb Frisch.
First, Inside Higher Ed has written an article in which they try to portray Frisch as just misunderstood:
Frisch posted a comment last week on Protein Wisdom, a Web site known for its no holding back conservative commentary, frequently with considerable mocking of liberal academics and ideas. Frisch, an adjunct lecturer at the University of Arizona until this weekend, said in the posting that she would not be sad if the 2-year old child of the site's founder, Jeff Goldstein, was "Jon Benet Ramseyed," and she reportedly posted other questions of the sort a Ramsey-inspired attacker might ask.
[…]Although Frisch apologized for the remark, which she called "nasty," numerous conservative Web sites over the weekend traded stories about Frisch, saying that she had physically threatened Goldstein and his child (she denies this and says that however inappropriate her comments were, they weren't threatening)
[…]On Saturday, Frisch – a cognitive psychologist who has taught at Arizona since 2003 – quit her adjunct position, and university officials quickly accepted her resignation. "I felt really bad that these right-wing nuts had dragged my boss into it," she said. "I thought that if I backed down and showed them they'd drawn blood by getting me fired, they'd move on to something else."
[…]Unlike many academics who express their political views online largely on Web sites they support, Frisch is known for going on conservative sites she abhors and engaging in debate. On Goldstein's site, she said, when she posted comments, others made "sexually disparaging and graphic comments about me."
Oh, I love that last paragraph….engaging in debate! Please check out a few of my earlier postings to get a sample of her debating techniques. Of course they couldn't get ahold of Jeff, surprise surprise. But Jeff did provide his own response:
I received no email or phone call from anyone at Inside Higher Ed.
A few corrections:
1) I don't believe I engage in "considerable mocking of liberal academics and ideas." I taught English for a number of years at a private university in Colorado, in fact, so I'm not unfamiliar with the academy.
True, I have addressed issues of identity politics within the academy, but I've done so seriously. And for the record, I consider myself a classical liberal (I am about as far from a social conservative as one can be, for instance). so while I've written extensively on questions of progressive philosophical assumptions and how they lead to things like, say, free speech zones, I don't mock liberalism. Just the opposite in fact: I think progressivism is in opposition to classical liberalism-particularly insofar as it promotes group identity over individualism.
2) Frisch's apology was immediately followed by a walking back of that apology, and has now culminated in a desire to see rightwingers heads cracked open with baseball bats, and suggestions that I doctored her comments.
But her comments were cut and pasted as she made them, and they are recorded in Google caches in pristine condition. The suggestion that I altered them, therefore, is potentially libelous.
3) No one on my site harrassed Frisch, as a perusal of the various threads she appeared on will attest. And in my post, her school email was not included.
4) Frisch is relying on sites like this one to suggest that she is a victim. Don't let her get away with it. Frisch was looking, by her own admission, to be banned from my site.
Not only that, but she is trying to suggest she is guilty of nothing more than engaging in a "teachable moment"-the presumptuous and self-importance of which is staggering.
But it bears noting that, even in your article, Frisch, an adjunct instructor, refers to herself as a "professor" and compares herself to Ward Churchill. Her desire for academic and leftwing martyrdom drips from her every word and claim. But I won't be used as her dupe.
I had been prepared to let this go (something I believe I made fairly clear after my site recovered from one of the 3 DoS attacks I was under this weekend), but now that Frisch has decided to try to parlay her infamy into victimized Truth Speaker status, I'm prepared to follow through and make it clear once and for all that Ms Frisch is a very sad case indeed. In fact, the only reason she's a "target" at all is that she has worked hard at setting herself up as one.
That is to say, rather than blaming "rabid, crazy, right-wing nutcases" for her troubles (such as they are; I happen to thing she's quite enjoying the attention), she should take ownership of her own behavior, which throughout has been vile and manipulative.

But lets go back to the initial runup of this scandal. The comments that lead up to this whole thing. I could cut and paste everyone of the comments or let FrauBudgie at Red Hot Cuppa Politics summarize them:
Remember, Debs Fischer said that they were so horrible that she had to defend herself by threatening a toddler. Well, there are maybe two "vaguely" suggestive comments. Period. Neither used obscenity. I'm also having a hard time reconciling the "comments" I saw on Sadly So with what I've seen on Jeff's actual blog.
Anyway, here's the pattern that emerged though. (have the sound track to TwilightZone playing in your mind as you read further).
First, "SouthwestPaw" sails in, makes a pretty offensive, racially oriented comment. Then a couple of comments later she says she's a psychologist. Then there's some banter, and she seems to be trying to get "adopted as a 'pet moonbat." The rest of the group avoids that. Then she promised to leave, and says good bye, three or four times. The other commenters say "goodbye, in one way or another.
But, she doesn't leave. She then asks if they can guess who she wants to be. A few play along, with inoffensive comments. Then somebody posts that she's playng "Look at meeee!!! Look at meeee!!! Look at me, Mommy! Are you Looking, Mommy!!!??? LOOK AT MEEEEEEEEE!!!!
I think that's what got to her, since she progressively loses it from there. If I were Jeff Goldstein, I'd block her e-mail, site, and slap an anti-stalking warrant on her. Then, I'd check my shoes for gooo.
You really have to go check them out for yourself to get that twilight zone sound going. What a creepy, sad, sick and twisted woman.
To help you in this matter Jeff has provided screenshots of the car wreck as it happens:
Also, I was able to find a window of uptime to grab a screenshot of Deb’s comments by IP from the other night. The screenshot appears below the fold. The comment where she mentioned frenching—which she’s now denying she wrote—is highlighted. See the original here.
If Frisch now wants to claim that I altered her comment in some way—rather than suggesting she never wrote it to begin with—we’re talking about libel.
Note that I began my post detailing her comments at 10:05 pm and simply cut and pasted her comments as they came in. The comment in question came in at 10:07. The first direct response to it—which quotes from it — comes at 10:10. Directly after that, Frisch comments again. And again. And again. And again (here, she repeats the “progeny” line). And again. And not ONCE does she say that her comment has been altered.
By this time, days after the incident became big news, you would think she would have cried uncle by this time. But instead she promises Fox News a interview but backs down at the last moment using the excuse that her and Jeff had made up:
Ms. Frisch,
Are you available for a phone interview on Monday. We will discuss what you've stipulated to have written, the blogosphere etc. I need a reply either way.
Regards,
REC

Dear Richard,
Of course. Any time Monday is fine with me. I was interviewed by Richard Harris on NPR when I worked for the National Science Foundation. I'll try to find the interview and send it to you, because I know you are really into fair and balanced reporting and the more information the better!
Deborah Frisch, Ph.D.

Thanks. I'll be in touch with you on Monday morning. Considering my request was for Monday, I wouldn't have the time or need to entertain your NPR experience but I appreciate the offer. Let's pencil in 710P EST via phone with John Gibson. Where can I reach you?
REC
****
I'm not sure where I'll be. You can give me your phone number or else I can email you when I decide where I'll be.
Could you tell me a little about the format of the show. I assume you'll be interviewing Jeff also. Will he be interviewed by phone also? How do you plan to put it together for the show. I don't watch Fox News so I don't have an image of what the segment will look like, how long it will be, what will be the visual since all you'll have is my audio, etc.
DF

This is for national radio. I didn't plan to have Jeff on. Just you and the host. So, it can be done by phone. This all pending the host's approval, he's back in town tomorrow and I haven't even run it by him.
REC

Richard,
I talked to a reporter from the Arizona Daily Star today and they are going to have a story tomorrow. Jeff and I have resolved our differences and both want to de-escalate the situation. So I am going to pass on the offer to be interviewed by Fox News.
But what a minute!
Deborah
We don't do that. We want to discuss the story about your interactions with Jeff and the "tone" in the blogosphere. I emailed Jeff, with whom I've never corresponded to before and he claims that (your claim) that you've put this behind you, is false. I don't know if this is a pattern with you but you agreed to come on, now you're obfuscating coming on and perhaps misrepresenting the situation. If you want to "de-escalate" why not hop on the phone with the host for five minutes and participate.
REC
How precious.
But now Deb appears to have FINALLY figured out that silence may be golden:
I really am sorry for saying that I would be indifferent to the suffering of Mr. Goldstein's child. And I am sorry that the UA's name was dragged into this. And I regret how this has upset and stressed out my family and friends.
I really do apologize for embarrassing the students and faculty at the University of Arizona.
This will be my last post on South(west)paw on the Goldstein affair for at least one month.
We shall see, we shall see.
I'm taking bets by the way. I have 10 bucks she breaks her vow of silence in say oh….24 hours.
And the final coup de grace maybe the fact that this whole episode may have caused a few of the wacked-out commentors to rethink their comments: (via RightWingSparkle)
I got an e-mail today from a former commenter apologizing profusely for her rude comments several months ago. I thought at the time that it might be a professor. I'm wondering if this whole drama made her rethink what she had written, if you know what I mean.
