Nancy Pelosi: “He’s (Bush) saying something to the effect of we’re so glad to welcome you here, congratulations and I know you’ll probably have some different things to say about what is going on-which is correct. But, as he was saying this, he was fading and this other thing was happening to me. My chair was getting crowded in,” said Pelosi. “I swear this happened, never happened before, it never happened since. My chair was getting crowded in and I couldn’t figure out what it was, it was like this. And then I realized Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Alice Paul, Sojourner Truth, you name it, they were all in that chair, they were. More than I named and I could hear them say: `At last we have a seat at the table.’ And then they were gone.”
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka: “Let’s call this right-wing ‘freedom’ catch phrase what it really is: a grossly political strategy to dupe the public, which holds the word ‘freedom’ as something sacred.” He further warned that people might opt out of social security, out of a union or out of paying union dues.
President Obama: “I hear folks running around calling this class warfare, this is not class warfare—let me tell you something: asking a billionaire to pay at least as much as his secretary, that’s just common sense.”
Joe Biden to Nancy Pelosi: “There’s not a single, solitary thing on our agenda that would have gotten done without your leadership. Those decisions you made, the risk you took, the losses we incurred, really did save this country.”
President Obama: “The way I think about it is, this is a great, great country that had gotten a little soft and we didn’t have that same competitive edge that we needed over the last couple of decades. We need to get back on track.”
President Obama: “Instead of working to boost our economy, they’re out there spending time trying to defund Planned Parenthood and prevent millions of women from getting basic health care that they desperately need – pap smears and breast exams.”
President Obama on retaining the Hispanic vote: “I don’t think it requires us to go negative in the sense of us running a bunch of ads that are false, or character assassinations. We may just run clips of the Republican debates verbatim. We won’t even comment on them, we’ll just run those in a loop on Univision and Telemundo, and people can make up their own minds,”
Harry Reid [defending federal funding for NPR]: “They had a great piece on public radio before the race started; it was really very, very good, about why the [sled dog] race takes place.”
Nancy Pelosi: “Democrats have long fought for fiscal responsibility as a top priority of this Congress. We won’t go into the history right now, but it’s well known.”
Chris Matthews: “You know, gentlemen, I’m a little bit jubilant right now, a little bit frisky so I’ll say something that will bother people…In a way it’s like it took Obama to have this [the revolution in Egypt] happen, or it’s just so serendipitous.”
Bill Maher: “I think he’s [Obama] a centrist the way he’s a Christian…he’s pretending to be a centrist.”
