Critics of the Obama administration’s response to the Benghazi attack allege that the Obama administration misled the American people both by pointing to a YouTube video as the cause and by refusing it an act of terror. Today, the president said there’s no substance to this charge, but his statements in the weeks following the attack last September suggest otherwise.

 The day after the attacks, during a September 12 interview with 60 Minutes, Obama told Steve Kroft, ”We’re still investigating exactly what happened and hesitated to ”jump the gun on this.” The nature of the Benghazi of the attack, he said, was ”not a situation as exactly the same as what happened in Egypt,” but refused to clarify further.

 During a September 18 appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman, the president said the ”shadowy character” behind the ”extremely offensive video” sparked the attack.

Ironically, if you examine all of the raw memos and 11 or 12 revisions, you do not find even one word about the, ” crude and disgusting video,” of which Obama speaks.

And early on, when Obama told Kroft, ”not a situation as exactly the same as what happened in Egypt,” he left out a bunch.
The Egyptian newspaper El Fagr wrote of imminent demonstrations at the U.S. embassy in Cairo with the goal of winning freedom for World Trade Center terrorist Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman.
Libyans probably don’t care whether the Blind Sheik rots in an American prison or not.
So….yeah….not exactly like in Egypt.

Obama called it a terrorist attach within 24 hours. Any investigation to the contrary is a political charade.

@This one:
Not according to the NYT. As reported by Kirsten Powers.
Obama is a liar.

@This one: Please post his direct quote that he stated within 24 hours.

Here’s the Washington Post’s take on it.

I recall the words. He mentions terrorism but does not call the actual event terrorism. He used the word “terror” generically in the Rose Garden on Sept. 12. And then for the next two weeks, he went on a media blitz blaming a video, including in an interview recorded that day with “60 Minutes.” In a segment that “60 Minutes” helpfully sat on for almost two months, Obama told Steve Kroft that “it’s too early to know” whether the attack was terrorism. He then went on “The View,” Univision and David Letterman pushing the idea that it was all about a video. At the United Nations, he condemned a “crude and disgusting” video but didn’t mention terrorism.

What’s your direct quote from him that you reference?

@Mully:
That’s a terrific link, Mully.

Glenn Kessler awarded the President the full-boat of four Pinnochios:

[T]he president’s claim that he said “act of terrorism” is taking revisionist history too far, given that he repeatedly refused to commit to that phrase when asked directly by reporters in the weeks after the attack. He appears to have gone out of his way to avoid saying it was a terrorist attack, so he has little standing to make that claim now.

I am sure David Letterman will take the President to task for lying directly to him and to the American people on his own show.

Oh wait, he’s too busy picking a Republican out of his hat for “Jerk of the Week” and still doing Romney jokes seven months after the election. Sad that a guy who has an edgy reputation just takes getting used like that. If this was a Network executive who publicly did that Letterman would be roasting them daily.

@This one: Dont’t you lefties ever feel ignorant when you are wrong? Why don’t you ever look at the evidence before you open your mouth and stick your foot in!
