Obama Campaign Sues to Restrict Military Voting

Mike Flynn @ Breitbart:

President Barack Obama, along with many Democrats, likes to say that, while they may disagree with the GOP on many issues related to national security, they absolutely share their admiration and dedication to members of our armed forces. Obama, in particular, enjoys being seen visiting troops and having photos taken with members of our military. So, why is his campaign and the Democrat party suing to restrict their ability to vote in the upcoming election?

On July 17th, the Obama for America Campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and the Ohio Democratic Party filed suit in OH to strike down part of that state’s law governing voting by members of the military. Their suit said that part of the law is “arbitrary” with “no discernible rational basis.”

Currently, Ohio allows the public to vote early in-person up until the Friday before the election. Members of the military are given three extra days to do so. While the Democrats may see this as “arbitrary” and having “no discernible rational basis,” I think it is entirely reasonable given the demands on servicemen and women’s time and their obligations to their sworn duty.

The National Defense Committee reports:

[f]or each of the last three years, the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program has reported to the President and the Congress that the number one reason for military voter disenfranchisement is inadequate time to successfully vote.

I don’t know the details of this action—all I know is the righty slant that I’ve read in this article. But I do know about the Republican effort to disenfranchise millions of voters through requiring certain kinds of ID’s in order to vote—for partisan reasons. http://www.pensitoreview.com/2012/08/01/new-study-links-support-for-voter-id-law-to-racial-resentment/

This story seems to me to be aimed at deflecting any possible guilt that may exist in the right-wing mind for their party’s attempt a limiting people’s right to vote.

@jorge: This seems like a petulant comment—being that most people who are disenfranchised are not receiving social welfare—harking back to the Reaganesque statement regarding ‘welfare queens’. How quaint.

I wondered how laws protecting the military’s right to have their voted in on time and counted might be messed with.
    Well, here is one way.
I read a quick poll the other day that showed Obama can count on less than 35% of the active military vote.
The big issue will be how Obama tries to prevent the mail-in military vote.
Will he use their lack of post mark against their ballots?
Or will he use something new?

@Liberal1 (objectivity): How does Voter ID disenfranchise anyone?? Please support your ridiculous statement with fact.

America should focus more on those who are not legitimately entitled to vote vs. the military. Of course we all know the disgusting 0-bama Democrat strategy here.

Inexcusable by the Obama campaign, and Lib1′s attempt at defending the indefensible is typical liberal/progressive rhetoric.

    @Common Sense:

States with voter ID laws have seen an increase in voter activity, including those who liberals claim would be disenfranchised. The ID system is intended to keep a person’s vote solely in possession of that person to cast and to no one else. It doesn’t block access to voting, just makes it harder to defraud the voting booth. But liberal1 and his bilge of comrades apparently can not stand this concept. Legally voter denial and disenfranchisement is not tolerated and is a federal offense but hey with such a stellar DOJ enforcing the laws over 2008 voter intimidation and disenfranchising of voters by the NBP party … Oh wait the current admin has not upheld the laws and is tossing a fit like liberal1 about how the various States are going about protecting the legal citizen’s voting rights…

National Review On Line just had an excellent article on voter ID and how wrong the liberal arguments are. If you want to look at some statistics – if it fits your agenda – you’ll find that states that require voter ID also provide it free. Then why are so few people taking advantage of it? For some, there could be real legitimate reasons, like age or health. But for most, I think they are just too damn lazy to do it! They’d rather have a unionista drive them to the polling place!

American Thinker has retracted the claim that the Obama administration has sued in Ohio in an effort to suppress the military vote.
