GOP senators were outraged at Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for invoking the “nuclear option” last year, calling his push to weaken the filibuster on presidential nominees a destructive and heavy-handed move with far-reaching consequences.
But now that Republicans are about to take control of the Senate, they seem unlikely to reverse it.
As they begin to plan their opening steps in the new majority, a growing number of Republican senators are expressing deep reservations about changing Senate rules back to the old system in which 60 votes were needed to overcome filibusters on presidential nominees. Instead, a number of senior
GOP senators like Orrin Hatch of Utah and even junior Republicans like Ted Cruz of Texas are signaling privately and publicly that they want to stay at the 50-vote threshold set by Reid’s Democratic Senate majority.
Reid’s move always did seem a bit shortsighted, as it appeared for quite some time that the Republicans had a realistic chance of taking over the Senate.
Pay back is a …, well you know, it’s tough. Democrats, enjoy your manure sandwich.
I always wondered at the lack of forethought on that move by Reid. But then again, sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander. Couldn’t happen to a better gander.
Democrats need also to remember that now that unless Obama’s prescedent of geatly expanding “prosecutorial discretion” is overturned, that can also come back to bite them in the arse.
I think this option needs to be exercised due to a President who not only has failed but also has chosen to ignore our Constitution!!
@Common+Sense: When the Republicans find leaders and the Obama Republicans become a bad memory, there are a great many legislative disasters that will need to be corrected. Reid has provided the means or at least a short cut. He is an arrogant jackass, but at least he has made a positive contribution to the country by providing the means to undue the aftermath of America’s greatest mediocrity.
