Bill Ayers/Bernardine Dohrn Wanna-Bes Busted

Tom Maguire @ JustOneMinute:

The NY Post provides a classic tale from the not-so-mean streets of NYC:

The privileged daughter of a prominent city doctor, and her boyfriend — a Harvard grad and Occupy Wall Street activist — have been busted for allegedly having a cache of weapons and a bombmaking explosive in their Greenwich Village apartment.

Morgan Gliedman — who is nine-months pregnant — and her baby daddy, Aaron Greene, 31, also had instructions on making bombs, including a stack of papers with a cover sheet titled, “The Terrorist Encyclopedia,’’ sources told The Post yesterday.

People who know Greene say his political views are “extreme,” the sources said.

His views are “extreme”? Does anyone out there care to bet his views are extremely conservative? I don’t see any hands…

Cops found the stash in the couple’s West Ninth Street home Saturday when they went there to look for Gliedman, 27, who was wanted for alleged credit-card theft.

A detective discovered a plastic container with seven grams of a white chemical powder called HMTD, which is so powerful, cops evacuated several nearby buildings.

Police also found a flare launcher, which is a commercial replica of a grenade launcher; a modified 12 gauge Mossberg 500 shotgun; ammo; and nine high-capacity rifle magazines, the sources said.

Cops also allegedly uncovered papers about creating homemade booby traps, improvised submachine guns, and various handwritten notebooks containing chemical formulas.

Hmm, high capacity rifle magazines but no rifle. Que pasa?

Since this is New York City I can predict the lessons Mayor Bloomberg and the NY Times will take from this:

1. We need stricter gun laws.

2. Darn that violent, deranged Tea Party and those angry white men.

3. Drat that crazy NRA.

Other libs will also bemoan evil 1 percenters such as these.

He went to Harvard.
She went to an Art Institute in Chicago.

If they follow in the footsteps of Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn their future looks promising.

@Buffalobob: @Nan G: Of course, I should have known better. All the trimmings for a future Democratic nominee for potus ( lower case intentional) – advisors, at the least.

I quit capitalizing obama, democrat, republican, congress, senate, house of representatives, white house, washington dc, etc., because I refuse to capitalize something I no longer respect.

They will get off by using the “self defense” defense. They were only going to use them if they were attacked.

@Smorgasbord: Cool!

Funny thing to me is the stupidity that led to their arrest. Hey, if you’re going to have some sort of illegal arsenal, maybe you shouldn’t double down and go stealing credit cards! Just a thought. Anyway, I doubt they will face serious time, mainly because there seems to be a lack of evidence for intent to cause a specific act of mayhem. With a good lawyer (which I expect their parents will provide) they’ll likely plead out to some assortment of weapons charges and be free within a couple of years. It’s a difficult case because the damning thing is the totality of the circumstances; a lot of the individual offenses here (like all of the non-explosive weapons stuff) are things I would consider minor in other contexts, but when you throw in the accompanying manuals and such it’s obviously a different matter.

On the plus side, the FBI will be able to keep a watchful eye on them for the rest of their lives.
As for the evacuation for 7 grams of HMTD, I think the article probably misrepresents the situation. You don’t evacuate nearby buildings because of the threat represented by 7g of explosive itself; you evacuate nearby buildings because once you’ve found 7g of high explosive, you don’t know what else might be in there until you’ve done a thorough search. Such a small quantity, even of HMTD, would do no more than remove your fingers (if set off in your hand) and likely wouldn’t even blow out the windows.

The thing that bothers me most about stories like this is that the police said an informant who had been in the house saw the stuff and called police. The police should never mention how they were alerted to a possible crime. It won’t be too hard to figure out who an informant is.

@Smorgasbord:
Neighbors said the building manager had laid a new counter top for their unit (only 7 units there) by their door.
Later maybe he went in to start the set up.
I’m just guessing.

@Smorgasbord: Well, sometimes that information has to come out in court. Notably if the defense challenges the legitimacy of the search warrant. But in general I agree – there is certainly no reason that the police should be revealing that information at this point. Mind you, stuff like that could also be deliberate disinformation and psyops designed to sow mistrust. You never know.

I’m guessing that there were only a few people who were in the apartment, and it will be easy for them to find out who turned them in. I’m guessing this is one reason people don’t report things. It should never be reported how police found something out.
