Are You A Military Veteran? Your DMV Wants To Know. …Oh? Why? (Guest Post)

RB DMV Line

I recently received my Driver’s License renewal. Interestingly enough, the DMV is now asking drivers if they are veterans. Well, now, that got me scratching my head and wondering: “Why do they want to know?” According to various state’s DMV web pages, having this veteran’s designation added to your license (to paraphrase) ‘is to to help you receive benefits, discounts and freebies from businesses who honor our veterans, and for you to be recognized for your service.’ I also found this page.

Huh…

Then I got to thinking…

Last year, it came out that the Department of Homeland Protection and the Federal government have alerted law enforcement all over the nation of the possibility that our veterans could become “home grown terrorists.” and that is also given part of the reason why they are offering tanks, military choppers, automatic weapons, and other such military grade weapons, in case of a veteran “terrorist” insurgency.

As the “Peter Parker” cos-play fans say: “My ‘spider sense’ is tingling.”

Whenever the Government starts ‘acting benevolent’, as in this case, I’m automatically thinking there is something ‘fishy’ going on here….or maybe not (but I doubt that). What was the problem of showing a separate ID card distinguishing yourself as a Veteran? In some states on the linked list you still have to show both? (license and ID). Which really doesn’t make much sense. Unless you are really forgetful…

Ditto, I have a question; it is only slightly off the mark, but maybe it will be an important consideration in the future.

Can the federal government save enough money by denying life-saving treatments to our veterans to justify bringing in tens of thousands of Third World people and treating their diseases?

If you feel this question is beyond polite conversation and commentary, I will understand; since no one else feels it is worth mentioning, however some of us are mad enough to do some impolite things in the near future.

@FAITH7:

Just two years ago I would have likely just shrugged and gone along with it. But with the DHS, various law enforcement heads and assorted Democrats making statements labeling returning veterans as “potential terrorists,” it makes me suspicious that this is a “Scarlet Letter” government registration campaign. Let’s not forget how paranoia by a Democratic President moved FDR to issue executive order 9066 authorizing the rounding up and internment of American citizens on the grounds of them being of Japanese descent, and therefore a possible danger.

Having it on DMV record would make it easy for local law enforcement, from their automotive computer interface, to locate and round up unsuspecting veterans for just such internment, should a similar Executive Order be enacted.

@Skookum:

I agree with you that it definitely bears mentioning, but as I believe you are referring to the recent flood of illegal immigrants and of course the VA scandal, I would think it would be more appropriate to those discussions.

The State just wants an easy way to identify those who have sworn to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. What could possibly go wrong?

I am a retiredVeteran. I therefore do not need any indicator on my drivers license.
So what happens when I say ” I refuse to answer on the grounds that I might incriminate myself!”?

Captain, when you express concern over the possibility of self-incrimination, by declaring you are a veteran and receiving an identifying mark on your driver’s license, to a totalitarian statist, you have already incriminated yourself.

During WWII, Jews were required to wear the yellow star of David. There were many who considered it to be a harmless mark of distinction; however, with this regime, you are considered a danger to the security of the state and our elites.

Thank you for your service; hopefully, the Obama Regime will not hold it against you in the future.

@CAPT USN RET (deceased?):

So what happens when I say ” I refuse to answer on the grounds that I might incriminate myself!”?

I was just contemplating the exact same thing.

they want your name, because they will call you to be their cover when they OBAMA AND MINIONS,
DECIDE TO CHANGE THE NAME OF AMERICA FOR THE NEW WORLD ORDER, AND CEASE EVERYTHING YOU USE TO FONCTION IN YOUR PRIVATE LIVES, AND WORK,
UNLESS YOU BECOME ONE OF THEM, BUT WON’T BE PAID FOR YOUR WORK AS BECOMING AN ENNEMY OF THE PEOPLE IF YOU ACCEPT, AND IF YOU DON’T THEY WILL KNOW ,
THAT YOU ARE THE ENNEMY TO BE DESTROYED WITH THE REST OF THE INSURGENTS THEY HAVE DECLARED TO BE, AND DID NOT FOUND INSCRIBED IN THE OBAMA BOOK HE STARTED FROM HIS FIRST DAY IN THE WHITE HOUSE, NAMES OF HIS LOYAL VOTERS, ONLY,
DITTO, THANK YOU FOR THAT POST, IT GIVE ME THE OPORTUNITY TO COMMENT ON THOSE NOT CRAZY PEOPLE WHO WARN US ALL OF WHAT THEY FOUND TO BE SO DANGEROUS FOR AMERICA , AND YOU RECONNIZE NAMES OF SMART KNOWLEDGEBLE PEOPLE WE SEE AND HEAR ON THE RADIO AND FOX NEWS, HIGHLY RESPECTED BY THEIR USUAL GOOD NEWS,

I’m not concerned by this. The state of Louisiana recently passed a law that allows veterans to receive a veterans license, but they have to request it and to show proof (DD214) of Honorable service. I went during the first week they were available and got mine. It was done in Louisiana to honor veterans, not to list them as terrorists. Every time that I show my drivers license, I get a great Thank you for your service. I love it.
Many places also give a 10% discount to all active duty and Veteran persons. That’s pretty nice also. This was not something that is required and is certainly only meant as an honor. I would certainly advise anyone that is afraid of the intent to just decline the invitation.

@Ditto:

Just curious Ditto, what state is this? Seems as if, from their question, that they are not requiring you to supply any proof of service and they obviously are not issuing a vet license without proof of honorable service.

@Redteam:

…It was done in Louisiana to honor veterans, not to list them as terrorists…

“You’re far too trusting” (Governor Tarkin to Princess Leah)

The claimed original intent of the NAZI party was only to identify the Jews. Bloomberg and the Democrats only want you to register all your guns, nothing nefarious to concern yourself about. They aren’t going to go door to door… OK maybe in California…OK New York too, but you can trust the rest of the Democrats, just look at Colorado.

The question here is not about those who see this as a way to “honor” the troops, It’s about whether a Constitution ignoring tyrannical socialist regime could abuse the trust. Given Obama’s past disregard and lack of respect for the laws of the land, I think it wise not to put much trust in this habitual liar of a President.

Seems as if, from their question, that they are not requiring you to supply any proof of service

My state is requiring proof, as were all the others I looked at. The link I provided gives information on a multitude of state’s regarding this.

@Ditto: The deal in Louisiana was passed by Republicans and is entirely voluntarily. No one is asked if they are a veteran, but any veteran that wants a veteran drivers license can get one with proof. I’m not too trusting. I assume you know me fairly well by all my comments here.
you said:

My state is requiring proof, as were all the others I looked at.

As I said, La does not even ask if you are a veteran and no one has to answer the question. But, if you want a vets DL then you do. I have heard of no state that requires you to state that you are a veteran unless you are requesting a Vet DL. Name a few of them for me, if you don’t mind.

@Redteam:

I have heard of no state that requires you to state that you are a veteran unless you are requesting a Vet DL.

I never indicated that it was a legal requirement to identify yourself as a Vet to the DMV. That doesn’t invalidate the possibility of this or another administration misusing the DMV databases at some future date to target Vets. There were Jew’s who hid the fact that they were Jews to the NAZI government. (George Soros helped to “out” some of them and was rewarded for his treachery.)

Some may argue that all this sounds like paranoia. I see it as being cynical hesitant and cautious, which is not an unwise tact to take when you are dealing with a “progressive” administration that usurps power from the other two branches and will not be constrained by either his party or they law. My purpose in posting this article is to open up discussion about the pros and cons.

Enjoy your accolades and discounts.

@Ditto:

True, but in your original post you said:

I recently received my Driver’s License renewal. Interestingly enough, the DMV is now asking drivers if they are veterans.

My statements are directed to that, that I have heard of no state asking for that info, much less ‘requiring’ that info. Passing a law to honor vets by giving them a Distinctive D L seems to be far from requiring them to register as vets for some questionable purpose. Why are you struggling with coming up with the name of a state that is ‘requiring’ you to say if you are a vet, as in the very premise of the article itself?
After all, you did say: “My state is requiring proof, as were all the others I looked at.”

HI,
I wonder if we would have a sign of CONSERVATIVE on the clothes we wear,
if we would not be attack by the indoctrinated sick minds from other side,
because we know if one has been on the same teaching by some of the zombies already sunk mind,
they are lost forever, AFTER THESE LONG YEARS, unless they get debrief for a long time to clean their mind ,
as radicaly as they have been indoctrinated on and on every day non stop,
and purposely for it’s end result,

@Ditto#3 – I agree with you totally…’fishy’…means a number of things ran through my mind, and the ‘potential terrorist’ was indeed one of them…

It is a passive way to get our Veterans to ‘comply’…with something…and if it involves the Government, to me, it can’t be good for them.

There are a lot of passive ways the Government gets ‘all of us’ to comply, Social Security is one. The ‘return on this’ is not worth giving up that freedom…

Obama hates our Veterans. And at this point in time I am sure the feeling is mutual.

@Bees#8 – Hey Bees – Bees you paint a very scary picture…I surely hope anything like that Never happens not here…I am sure the good freedom loving people of the United States of America will surely stand up and FIGHT against such tyranny!!!

@Redteam:

I currently live in Nevada, as you could have easily gleaned from reading some of my past posts here in FA.

The renewal says: “Please check the appropriate boxes below:” (Said boxes are labeled “Yes” or “No”) Aside from asking about Organ Donor, selective service, ask if you have a disability that could effect your driving, and asking if I want voter registration information sent.

The form then asks if I declare myself to be an honorably discharged veteran. After that it asks if I want to have a veteran’s designation placed or retained on my Lic. It then states that a DDD-214 must be sent in if “Yes” is checked for either answer. The renewal seems to indicate that they expect a “Yes” or “No” answer, and while it does notsay that making a selection is mandatory, the form ends with a typical government “under penalty of perjury” statement and a space for a signature.

As it requests a “Yes” or “No” answer for each question, including veteran’s status, and includes a “perjury” statement, some could read it as “requiring” an answer. but with the “Please, check the appropriate boxes below:” It seems that there may be an “voluntary” element on whether you decide to provide an answer for each question. But there is no disclaimer indicating a right to refuse to answer.

Living in the Peoples Demokratic Republik of Kommiefornia I wouldn’t tell them I’m a vet if they threatened my life.

I found this:

VETERANS LICENSES

Veterans with an honorable discharge will be able to have their service noted on their licenses or identification cards next to the license number.

It will be the word “VETERAN” in blue placed next to the license or ID card number. Those seeking the designation need to bring a DD-214 discharge form for the next renewal or send a copy with a mailed renewal.

The designation has been implemented in more than a dozen other states. The easy identification has helped veterans gain access to veterans’ services as well as discounts at retail stores and restaurants.

“I think it is going to be huge for the state of Nevada,” said Caleb Cage, director of military and veterans policy for Gov. Brian Sandoval. “When I was with the Nevada Office of Veterans Services we had a lot of requests for a state-issued ID card of some sort.”

The new designation on a driver’s license will serve that purpose, he said.

In addition to discounts and other opportunities for veterans, it will give the state abstract data about where veterans reside, which will help in making decisions on where to offer and improve services, Cage said.

Assemblyman Randy Kirner, R-Reno, who co-authored the measure with many of his colleagues, said the designation will serve two purposes.

“There is the pride in serving, and it is nice to see our service recognized in this way,” he said. “But it will also give our state Department of Veterans Services a way to reach out to our veterans to educate them on the benefits they may be entitled to.”

An Army veteran who served in Vietnam, Kirner said he has already filled out the form to get the designation on his license when it comes up for renewal in February.

“Having the designation will open up a number of opportunities for our veterans,” he said.

From all I can find, Nevada, as many other states have done, has responded to requests by Veterans to provide a state issued drivers license that designates persons that so desire, as Honorably Discharged Veterans. I can find absolutely nothing that requires Veterans or non-Veterans to involuntarily register as a veteran or as a non-veteran.
I kinda think you’ve mis-read the intent to honor veterans as something evil.
If you’re a vet, request a license if you so desire. Do not mention it if you don’t. If you’re not a veteran, do not make a statement about it either way.

If you still disagree, please show me a copy of a form sent to you by the state ‘requiring’ or ‘hinting’ that you are required to disclose your veteran status. I’m not asking for any personal info, of course.
I don’t recall having read in the past that you are from Nevada. I usually agree with your opinions.

I could easily be regarded as one of the more paranoid types who frequent these boards. On this one, I’m on the Redteam team all the way. Unless it becomes mandatory and requires no verification, it’s a benefit, not a threat.

All vets should know that Home Depot and Lowe’s offer ten percent off all regular prices (perhaps also sale prices) to all vets who can provide official ID and who ask for the discount at the register. There are many other corporations with a similar approach to vets.

@DaNang67:

All vets should know that Home Depot and Lowe’s offer ten percent off all regular prices (perhaps also sale prices)

So true, and several other companies do also. That’s a nice benefit and I get many “thanks for your service” comments. I’m rather proud to show my new DL with the word VETERAN in large blue letters.

HI,
AND YOU DESERVE ALL THE GOODIES,
THAT YOUR BELOVE AMERICA CAN GIVE HER BRAVES WARRIORS,
for having give so much time of your life ,
to the active protection of the USA
the youngs don’t begin to understand what it take of the military to become worthy of entering the different groups,
I LOVE YOU ALL, AND I LOVE HOME DEPOT, FOR THE HELP THEY PARTICIPATE IN WITH YOU ALL,
AND FOR THEIR GOOD PRODUCTS AND FOR THE PLEASURE TO GO AND EVEN LOOK AROUND IT IS DISPLAY TO MAKE A NICE TRIP TO GO IN AND CHECK THEIR PRODUCTS,
way to go ,HOME DEPOT, don’t change anything, except, TO GIVE US MORE OF the new products comming made in AMERICA, AND PROUDLY LABEL,

In normal times, when America has a president who inspires trust, this would not be an issue, but America doesn’t trust a man who lies. Obama has lost the confidence of America. Not only do we consider him to be a liar, but many Americans doubt his loyalty to America and its people. America is in one of the darkest hours of its history; its Commander in Chief is considered to have sympathies with our enemies. He considers out vets to be a greater danger to the country than the people who want to enslave us. Hell yes, we are suspicious!

Skookum
I think so too,
BY HIS ACTIONS, always to get the people angry,

@Skookum:

America is in one of the darkest hours of its history; its Commander in Chief is considered to have sympathies with our enemies.

yes, I agree with that, but I don’t think that has much to do with the subject. If the federal gov were involved in the states honoring vets, then I’d be concerned. This action was initiated by the vets in the states and was done as an honor. The low lifes in DC were not involved in this so we should be ok.

I’ve had the “Veteran” designation on my drivers license since I moved to a state that offered a free license to their veterans some 30+ years ago. Then I found out about the “Freebies” offered by various companies (Home Depot, Lowes, Golden Corral…) for the Veteran, and I showed my license with the designation for proof.

Now, I’m thinking about removing that designation….

@Dollarbang:

Now, I’m thinking about removing that designation….

Why, do you no longer feel as if it’s an honor? The fact that it originated, in your case, 30+ years ago should be sufficient to prove that it’s not an Obama trick to identify Veterans as terrorists. But, it’s your license, continue to be honored or not, it’s clearly a choice you are free to make. That freedom is yours courtesy of that service that the state is attempting to honor you for. Accept the honor or decline it. Thank you for your service.

Dollarbang
HI,
when you are so priviledge to have come back unharm,
yes for the sake of other who did not made it, or are disable for life,
yes you diserve the minute goodies you can have from civilians in business with a wish to thank you,
their own way, which is very thoughtfull,
the goodies are youres to have,
think of that here, the MILITARY are the MOST PRECIOUS TREASURES , of this AMERICA,
FOREVER NEEDED, as OPPOSE TO PRESIDENTS WHO COME AND GO,
BEST TO YOU, AND NICE OF YOU TO COME AND WE WANT YOU BACK,

I seem to have created a fire storm.

As a retired Vet I have a military ID with me so I do not need the DMV designation.

Let me relate a little history. When Social Security was started, it was clearly written in the law that your SSN could NOT be used for identification or tracking in any system except the Social Security Administration database. In other words it sould not be used in a computer system (bank, credit card etc.) ass the the identifying number. Now every time you call most places you must relate the last 4 of your social security number so the person(s) you are talking to can find you in the system.

So now your SSN is your National ID number. The military even used it instead of a military Id number until Identity Theft became so rampant.

How long do you think it will take for the Vet ID mark on your license to be perverted?

Just my thoughts………….

@CAPT USN RET (deceased?): Capt, just curious, how long have you been deceased and how long do you have to maintain that condition before you are allowed to resurrect?

As a retired Vet I have a military ID with me so I do not need the DMV designation.

I’m gonna make a guess that MOST Vets are not ‘retired’ Vets. Would you agree?

So now your SSN is your National ID number. The military even used it instead of a military Id number until Identity Theft became so rampant.

And several states formerly used it for drivers license numbers. If someone is going to steal your identity, they will, makes no difference what you use for an ID number.
Capt, you don’t have a problem with vets being honored, do you?

Hope your deceased condition improves soon.

RE: The deceased designation.

This harkens back to my college days in LA. There was a morning show with two personalities “Charlie and Harrigan”. They simulated a character known as RADM Bruno I Abernathy RET, Deceased. I sort of stole the idea.

Charlie and Harrigan became very successful executives in the Radio and TV business.

I went into the Navy.

I honor Vets every chance I get. I am just a very suspicious person where the Government is concerned (see latest VA and IRS problems).

In my family (Father, Uncles, Cousins, Brothers, In-Laws, Out-Laws, Children and Nieces/Nephews) you cannot help and be with a veteran, no matter how hard you try.

CAPT USN RET ( DECEASED )
yes
you are absolutely right to be suspicious, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR GAUARD DOWN,
there are some despicable criminals who have no remorse to rob identity,
and they excel in their crimes,
the less they can find, the better for the WARRIORS comming back from WAR,
and not thinking that those criminals are watching to see if you become their prey,
YOU PROTECTED THE FREEDOM OF ALL THE PEOPLE,
WE ALL MUST PROTECT YOU ALL, WHEN YOU COME BACK
HOME,
BECAUSE YOU ALL ARE PRECIOUS FOR AMERICA,

CAVUTO
DON’T EVER AGAIN PICK ON THE GOOD AMERICAN,
SHE IS DOING GREAT WHERE SHE WORK TO SAVE AMERICA,
SHE IS A PATRIOTE NOT TO BE INSULTED,
PICK ON HIGHER, THE ONE AIMING TO DESTROY AMERICA,

@CAPT USN RET (deceased?):

I went into the Navy.

Mine and my brothers choice also. Loved it. Thanks for your service.

@CAPT USN RET (deceased?):

How long do you think it will take for the Vet ID mark on your license to be perverted?

I don’t expect it will ever be. It’s an honor and will remain one, in my opinion.

@FAITH7:
You guys are weird they already have our info on file chill out… our dd214 tell them everything they need to know in order to track us down and know our whereabouts.

@Cjayswagg: All true. But to get the veteran designation on the drivers license in Louisiana, you have to provide your DD214 only as proof you served honorably. They did not make a copy of the 214, only looked at it for verification. Once it has been verified, it doesn’t have to be shown again. I don’t think there is ANY evil intent in supplying me with a veteran designation on my DL. I don’t think anyone will misuse it. I have already found benefits from it. Lot’s of companies will give you a discount if the word Veteran is on your DL.

@Redteam:

“The road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

No one is arguing that there aren’t benefits available to those who have it acknowledged on their DL that they are a veteran.The problem is not the intent of good hearted people who support our troops and veterans, but those who do not and might abuse the trust. Look at how Democrats are now demonizing all law enforcement because of the misdeeds of a few (fueled in part by the MSM’s biased reporting, which unfairly taking a position supporting activists over the police). Do you really think that the far left, (who typically despises our military and veterans,) would even hesitate to use the same kind of biased propaganda to paint our military and vets in a similar light? I’ve often heard lefties speculate that all former and past military should be tested for PSDT before being allowed their Second Amendment rights. I don’t trust any Democrats to have our best interests in mind, nor do I trust many GOPe for that matter. Progressive-fascist tyranny will always take advantage of the trust given them in order for them to enact their agenda.

@ilovebeeswarzone: I miss you Ms Bees!

@Ditto: I share your skepticism, however if there are SOB’s out there that want to be SOB’s, they will likely do it whether ‘VETERAN’ is on my license or whether it’s not on my license. I formerly lived in a state that used your SS number for your driver’s license number (they no longer do that) I had no reservations about that because I knew that SS no’s were being stolen in states that did not use it for drivers license numbers, so I just opted for the convenience. Crooks will be crooks and while I do not think we should make it even easier for them, they will still usually find a way.

@Randy: A lot of us do also, Randy.

After reading these comments I understand a majority of you have serious mental illness and I feel sorry for all the conspiracy theorists

My father was a World War 1 veteran (he had been gut shot in France) and he was supposed to have so called Gold Status but when he had a stroke I was not able to get him into our local VA Hospital for treatment which was at Fort Hamilton. After many tries I managed to finally meet someone in there who told me that the only way I could do it was to call an ambulance and have them bring him to the emergency entrance without my accompanying him. That forced them to admit him. Then I would have to say that I was unable to sign for him to leave after they admitted him. This worked so they finally placed him in a decent nursing home. He was unable to walk or talk and could not move one of his arms so there was not choice for me. He stayed there and I visited him every day until he died. It was a terrible thing for me and him. I cannot ever forget their actually refusing to help him. This was back in the 90’s under that Sc&mB&g Clinton.

I have no difficulty having my Veteran designation placed on my license. I look at it as a way to draw fire to me and away from others who are less capable to resist. I do believe it has allowed me to avoid a speeding ticket once or twice when I was asked where I served. There are a lot of State Police who are veterans. I have also been asked to testify before the Colorado Government on veteran affairs.

@Randy: The best numbers I seem to be able to find indicate that about 7% of Americans are veterans.

Wonder why this suddenly showed up on ‘active discussions’ Of course since this discussion, the new thing now is “REAL ID Drivers Licenses” issued in all states.

@Ditto: @UpChuck.Liberals: You are not an American.
