Cops: Mother of two surprises intruder with five gunshots

The Loganville mother of two assumed the knocks on her front door Friday afternoon were from a solicitor.

“Don’t answer,” she yelled to her 9-year-old twins playing downstairs.

When the visitor began repeatedly ringing the doorbell, she called her husband at work.

“Get the kids and hide,” he told his wife.

As he dialed 911, his 37-year-old spouse, who works from home, collected the children and hid with them in a crawlspace adjoining her office. By that time, the intruder had forced his way into the three-story residence on Henderson Ridge Drive with a crowbar, authorities said. He allegedly rummaged through the home, eventually working his way up to the attic office.

“He opens the closet door and finds himself staring down the barrel of a .38 revolver,” said Walton County Sheriff Joe Chapman, who relayed the woman’s narrative to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He asked that her name be withheld.

The woman fired six bullets, five of which hit Paul Ali Slater in the face and neck area, Chapman said. But Slater was still conscious.

“The guy’s face down, crying,” the sheriff said. The woman told him to stay down or she’d shoot again.

Lucky for her the guy couldn’t count.

Slater, unaware that she had emptied her chamber, obliged as the mother and her children ran to a neighbor’s house.

Had she missed a few times more the outcome might have been very different. So let’s talk again about those higher capacity magazines.

“My wife’s a hero,” the woman’s husband, Donnie Herman, told Channel 2 Action News in a brief statement. He did not respond to a request for comment from the AJC. “She protected her kids. She did what she was supposed to do.”

I agree.

The perp is a career criminal

The Long Island native, who now lives in Gwinnett County, was released from the Gwinnett jail in late August after serving six months for simple battery and three counts of probation violation. Slater has six other arrests in Gwinnett dating back to 2008, according to jail records.

As for Slater?

Slater was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center and is expected to survive, the sheriff said.

Can’t win ’em all.

If people would learn to have faith in Obama’s Statism, they could be raped and butchered while waiting for the police, and forego this nasty business of shooting criminals who break into homes. This infringes on the civil rights of perpetrators and leads to unnecessary violence. We live in this fantasy world, where we believe we are capable of defending our loved ones; this is the job of the police, they are trained in how to subdue these maniacs. Civilians have no business trying to defend themselves. There are victim support groups that help people overcome attacks. Do we feel it is necessary to use violence to stop violence? And what of these criminals who are shot several times and face months or years of rehabilitation; who stands up for them?

We believe the Second Amendment gives us the right to stand against an oppressive government, but isn’t the National Guard a militia. Do you honestly think they could be used by a Statist government that is trying to disarm the citizenry? Whoops! Well they are a type of militia, and a Statist government doesn’t function well, unless the citizenry is disarmed and incapable of defending themselves, then and only then can we enjoy the fruits of Statism. Totalitarian government requires willing victims who have complete faith in the government to take care of their every need; victims and perpetrators will all have the same rights in a gun free society. If there is an altercation and a man wants to rape your wife and children, you damn well better let him do his thing and call the police for them to straighten out the situation; otherwise this same scenario will be repeated many times.

If her 38 can handle them, she should shift to hollow point 38 special ammo; they are better people stoppers. Or shift to a semi-auto 45. However, revolvers are simpler weapons and don’t jam, so they are in general better weapons for people who do not routinely go to the firing range.
I like a 20 gauge pump shotgun cut down to legal minimums for ease of use with pistol grips (It would then be an assault weapon under Sen. Feinstein’s bill). A 20 gauge can be fired from the hip or even with extended arms by a lady, as my wife can attest.

IF I have to shot a home invader (hpoefully never) I’m gonna hide the body and save a lot of lawyer time… My wife will probably get him first……..

@Dave Brikner: I have acreage and a backhoe… and the Sheriff’s office takes a long time to get out to our place…

by the way she shot him,
he should me missing a nose, a mouth and an eye,
this will be his branding for life

@Skookum: You should really stick to fiction. Calling something Statism or Authoritarianism doesn’t make it true. I would much rather live in this country rather than under a true authoritarian government like the right wing fascists would prefer—see, I can call things names too. “Love it or leave it”, as the right-wingers used to say.

@Liberal1 (Objectivity): define “right wing fascists” and explain why you think anyone who doesn’t think as you do wants a ” true authoritarian government”.

That certainly doesn’t describe any of the conservatives posting here, so I am curious about whom you are referring to.

I’m kind of surprised the perp survived. Even without the use of hollowpoints, five rounds at close range from a .38, right to the face and head… I guess he was lucky.

@Liberal1 (Objectivity):

Calling something Statism or Authoritarianism doesn’t make it true.

So says the person who uses adjectives like “extreme”, “far right”, and “ultra”, when describing anyone who leans conservative.

see, I can call things names too.

You have before, pretty much since I’ve been coming to this site. And you continue to do so, in some deranged effort to apply stigma to the normal, in favor of the statist, progressive ideology you prefer.

I’d say something about a pot and kettle, but that’s obvious to anyone who has read your past musings here at FA.

Liberal 1
you have a lot to learn, so read instead of trying to push your mindset on the other
and tell them what to type or not type, no body gave you that job,
and they all are many notchs superior than what you are showing to be
every time you show up.

@Liberal1

Hate to break it to you, but modern liberalism what you espouse and blather and droll over is in actually the fascism that Nazi Germany wanted in terms of policies. Forced citizen compliance to nationalized healthcare, forced gun control laws, businesses lock step to Government demands and agendas. The only difference is right now you do not have the legal means nor power to forcefully make citizens comply as it violates our 1st, 2nd, 4th and 10th rights in the standing law of the land and is being challenged successfully by people in the courts who do not want to comply with your liberal dreams of a “utopia.”

Excellent report by WXIX-TV Tucson reporter Ben Swann:

Reality Check: The “Politically Incorrect Truth” About The Second Amendment

“This is where American history becomes very politically incorrect because the Second Amendment was not drafted for hunting, or just self defense from an attacker. The Second Amendment was put into place to guarantee the rights of the individual to be equally armed as military, both foreign and domestic, in the event that the citizenry might actually, at some point, have to fight their own government,” explained Swann.

“Again, it’s a very controversial subject. But if we’re going to have a debate about what rights we’re actually going to guarantee under the Constitution, then we need to have an honest debate about what the Founders were attempting to guarantee,” Swann said.

“The Second Amendment is about making sure the population would not be controlled, dominated or oppressed by a government,” Swann explained. “It’s not my place to tell you what the Founders were thinking, or what they would be thinking today. But the principle of what they put into place had nothing to do with the kind of weapon they were guaranteeing, it was simply about matching force.”

@Ditto: It is about time it was said. Those on our side of the issue usually do not educate our citizens on the “whys” of the 2nd Amendment from the Fourders viewpoint. There are many things that the federal government does that is not constitutional, but the 2nd Amendment is a basic right. They can find abortion in the privacy statement of the 14th Amendment, but not protection against oppression by our government in the 2nd. The August 1, 1946 Battle of Athens (TN) needed the 2nd Amendment to allow veterans to recover their other rights from an oppressive county government.

a woman defending her home is nothing new. and gun rights is not a conservative or liberal issue. Most Americans support the right the bare arms. The issue is should high powered and automatic weapons be allowed. This is an example of a situation a gun came in handy. Most of the time a person does not have the time to get to there gun, get in a comfortable position and surprise the criminal. Another good time to have a gun is during a natural disaster where there may not be communication or contact with government officers for days. Looting may happen and each person or family may need to protect there homes.

Tim
yes the looters at SANDY, where doing a lot to concern the people already reduce to the lowest human capability to defend themselves, if there at the beginning have been gun owner they could have treminate the problem right then by setting an example and shooting a few of those scums,
it took a while before they had the help enough to make them feel secure,
when you lose all you have and holding on to the roof over your head and a few pictures, and copper pipes
someone come to steal it, they don’t deserve any chance, or compassion,
it is doing a human service to shoot them down,

@ilovebeeswarzone:

Ms. Bees, Hurricane Katrina, and what happened in New Orleans, is a better example. Many people stayed in New Orleans for the looting that was sure to follow. That they did so at their own peril from nature’s wrath is quite beside the point. There were also people who stayed, knowing that looting would happen, and they wanted to protect what they had and they assumed that the storm wouldn’t affect them too badly.

Cue the various governments and their representatives, such as the police, who issued proclamations to seize firearms from any and all that were stayed. They were under the misunderstanding that they would be removing firearms from those committing the robberies and murders, while in actuality, they were removing the means of protection by the law abiding citizens who decided to stay. In many cases, after order was restored, those people who did give up their firearms, stupidly in my opinion, never got them back.

So what happens when a disaster, natural or otherwise, happens AFTER a person’s second amendment rights have been limited?

Johngalt
yes and no matter if they kill some looters, there are more to do the job,
it’s part of the one with a socialist mindset they learn from the schools being themselves
those taught
that it’s okay to take from other,
I’m still having bad dreams about that black men knocking at the door on and on persistent,
and finally broke in, and ramsack the place and not happy of his looting went to break in the hideway where the mother and her twins, so scared, having her husband on the phone who had recently teach her to handle the gun, he was trying to calm her and tell her to do exactly what she learn recently only,
she did a great job,
and if she would not have had the gun, she would not be alive today and same for the children,
her husband had surely a vision of the future to decide to teach her,
those thieves and looters are like the worms, they come out out of nowhere when
there is a cataclysm crisis of any kind, you can bet they will come

johngalt
a good lesson to learn ,
that is to keep your weapon, even if they ask for it,
it’s not their lives which are in danger, they have their own gun,
no it’s you’ life and family which is in danger now more than ever,
after that stupid NEWSPAPER DEMONSTRATION. to late to fix or erase, and they led the criminals where the info is easy to have, for those other not in the paper
